Lets be honest, if this romance had a cliche Disney happy ending, would it be nearly as memorable?

Yes.  For one, it's not over yet.  So having a happy ending would make all the previous pain and heartache totally worth it.  Although to be honest I don't see a Disney ending in the works for Solas and Lavellan which isn't to say they couldn't have some happiness just not settling down, getting married and having 2.5 kids with a white picket fence.  I could see them traveling the world and tirelessly trying to help the elves or some such .. or helping people get used to a new Thedas with no Veil or however that's going to play out.  Or even sacrificing themselves to stop the Evanuris/Blight/whatever from truly destroying the world.

True, but there is a lot of wiggle room between inevitable death and Disney. I can think of numerous shades of bittersweet just off the top of my head. Ultimately I think it has to be satisfying when it's finished for good (or it should be), and that means different things to different people.

 

@Ajna - Aha! I thought I remembered someone saying such a thing about Thane, but I couldn't remember for certain if it was PW. Thanks for posting that! x

Oh yeah... If the option to have him lives exist (and I think it ultimately will) there will be a cost and it won't be one that all players might be ready to pay. As far as Sophie's choice go... what/who would you be willing to sacrifice so he'll live? What burden of guilt will your Inquisitor end up with? Living isn't easy. Your hands will be bloody. You will have things to atone for also.

Although, I sat on my Warrior PT with full intention of romancing Cullen, she's not even at Haven yet and I just... can't do it. I honestly think the Solas romance has spoiled me for the other romances! They all seem (and I really mean no offense to anyone when I say this) quite small and petty in comparison. URGH!

Nope! I freaked out too when I figured it out. Imshael had possessed her but Felassan convinced him to leave her by saying "bigger things" were coming. I kind of wish we had been able to recruit her as a companion.

 

She also tries to get the passcode from Briala at the end, but Briala refuses unless the Dalish agree to help the city elves.

I think Weekes is one of the best writers as far as understanding what fans want, but also keeping to the original vision that the story hand. Solas is actually a really good example of it. The story demands that he become the villain- but the ending is written in a way that does not feel as though we've lost. 

 

He was also one of the writers who pushed for Tali/Garrus to be a romance option, arguably two of the top three romance options in Mass Effect.

 

At this point- I have pretty much complete faith in Weekes. He is an immensely talented writer who cares about both the community and story. I can't say enough how thrilled I am that he's now the lead writer for Dragon Age.

I think the ME devs admitted they forgot about some of the romance options when they resolved their arcs. I doubt they'll do the same in the case of Solas, because he's such a prominent and complicated character, who has been quite divisive, so I think they'll likely try extra hard to ensure everyone's satisfied with how his character arc ends.

 

Also, the DA writing team isn't the ME writing team, exception being Weekes.

 

A couple of other ME writers joined the DA team for DAI.

Something I'm confused about:

What was the damn point in the elven artifacts to strengthen the veil? Okay, we could take it that perhaps Solas was lying and it didn't really strengthen anything (I mean, it does uncover a pretty powerful rift), but even the Dalish mage at the first artifact is sure it'd strengthen the veil.

The only thing I can think of is his comment about not being a monster, and he would rather the people who will have to die do it in relative comfort. I suppose the elven artifacts helped ensure there were less rifts, but it I don't know. Thoughts?

Now that I think about it

He says these artifacts belong to the ancient elves, and act to strengthen the veil. Did he create them before he put on the veil and then scattered these to support the veil where there were a lot of wars (like building foundations)? Did they serve a different purpose before? I am confused, I can't see these artifacts being placed post-veil because I sort of headcanon Solas went to sleep afterwards because otherwise he would've been aware of thet a catastrophe he had brought on and tried to fix it instead of waiting. If they were placed post-veil it was possibly by Solas' agents..

Anyhow, I do believe Solas doesn't lie (except by omission), I don't think these serve to weaken the veil, he cares about spirits, he probably hates it when they get corrupted after passing to the other side and it could be a mean of protecting them.

Did you notice, how soflty he asks the "I suspect you have questions," if you're his beloved one? I almost cried out when I heard it as opposed to the trailer. It reeked of doomed romance right than and there.

I had a dream last night, that Solas succeed in his plan and all of the modern day elves, but Lavellan, died. Solas tries to help Lavellan to get use to this world and even see that this is for the better, but its no good. Lavellan is just to deep in depression from grief and Solas starts to think that it would be best if he gave her some space.But when he comes back, she's gone. He later finds her where her clan use to frequently camp out and sees her dead body slumped against a tree. She had slit her own throat and bled to death. He then buries her and plants a tree at the foot of her grave, since that is how Dalish bury their dead and giving her a Dalish burial is the least he could do.
Solas, even when he thinks he's won, he actually loses.

 

I'm not suddenly being attacked by a pile of feelings. Nope.

My Solas-related dream I can't quite remember but it seemed more meta and I remember there being some sort of dinosaur (?) type thing that was a puzzle, like guardians that prevented us from following him and was a new lore mystery. So they just came and found my Lavellan because she couldn't chase due to these new guards.

Ugh, there need to be more likes available! Yes, fully agreed with both of these.

 

As much as I adore David Gaider (Dorian, Shale, Cass and HK47 forever!), Patrick Weekes is my absolute favourite Bioware writer ever, and my favourite videogame writer of all after Chris Avellone. I was thrilled to bits when I learned he was the one who would be taking over. The franchise couldn't be in better hands, in my view.

He's the Dread Wolf who created the Veil to save the elves from the Creators, who are actually evil, but he took away our immortality, and now he's trying to end the world by removing the Veil, which will cause us all to die, but our ancestors will come back again, but deep inside he's still a good person, he's just very conflicted, and he needs to let go of the past and realize this world is beautiful as well, and please don't look at me like this!
