After RPing a Shepard with Earthborn and Sole Survivor backgrounds, someone with heavy trust issues and a lot of associated pain, I was not doing that again. B)

Yeah, Earthborn/SS Shep is a hot mess.  Mine worked it out eventually, but it took a long time and a lot of Garrus headbutts :D

Okay, so I've ran through the DLC 3 times, and only now am I noticing a bug. I won't spoiler it since it's not Trespasser spoilers, but essentially it's treating the game as if I put Gaspard on the throne, but I definitely reconciled Celene and Briala. When it's mentioned, they talk about Gaspard, and the Emperor. Wat.

Anyone else had something like that?

Edit to keep it on topic: I know it's overly done, but I love the idea of my protags. having little-to-no family to speak of, it speaks to my IRL situation, and I love how they always emphasize you can find family in your friends.

Yep, it's a very common bug. I didn't have it, mine registered Celene alone (which is what is saved but not what I wanted to do, but it read my save right).

I gave my quizzy a relatively loving and supportive family because the girl has enough angst in-game without me adding to it, and enough people who probably think she's crazy for trying to save Solas.

Also I'm a bit tired of my poor PCs having nonexistent or terrible families.  I can be a hero and have normal parents, damnit!

This is why I liked DA:O's City Elf origin - you were obviously part of a community, and were close to your dad and cousins. All of my city elves have been fiercely protective of their family for that reason. It's really nice to see healthy, good family relationships in fiction.

I also quite like 'grey' relationships with family. You can have a trying relationship with your parents or your siblings or your extended family without it being completely dysfunctional (I'm speaking, I suppose, a bit from experience here). And it's nice to see instances where difficult relationships become slightly less difficult - people find common ground, grow closer, realise what's truly important. I hope that if Lavellen does trust her mum enough to tell her that, yes, she screwed up, she fell for the Dread Wolf, and she's completely heartbroken, that her mum will surprise her by hugging her and telling her it's ok and showing real sympathy.

That said, I think unspeakably bad relationships can sometimes work if done in a different manner. My Surana came from a family of strongly religious elves, who had escaped Tevinter to become travelling traders in the south - when she showed her first sign of magic at the age of nine, her mother called her a maleficar and she was abandoned by her family in the wilderness. She deals with it by a) not mentioning it ever, and B) if someone mentions it, act as nonchalantly as possible. If she acts like it didn't happen or affect her, then maybe it didn't. There are too many sad life stories in the world, she thinks, no need to add another. Very similar to Zevran in that respect.

Can't like, but here's a heart <3. I'm not too bothered about it since I suspect any future games will utilize the Keep rather than imports, and the right choice is selected there. That's fine enough for me.

After RPing a Shepard with Earthborn and Sole Survivor backgrounds, someone with heavy trust issues and a lot of associated pain, I was not doing that again. B)

So she has her parents and is the eldest of three. By Trespasser's end she's about 33. Her sister is 25, and little surprise brother is nearly 17. She also has a super close relationship with her longtime friend and onetime first love and her wife. So I definitely gave my Lavellan cushions to fall on.

My Shepard's actually probably the most happiest out of my PCs family-wise!

Spacer + War Hero, she's v. close to her family, v. proud to be part of the Alliance, and her parents are super proud of her in turn. All good, no drama.

In comparison, most of my DA PCs come from crappy backgrounds. My Brosca loathed literally everything about Orzammar, the only person she liked betrayed her (WHY LESKE WHY); my city elves have had obviously crap lives (see: origin plot); my mage was abandoned by her family. Most of Hawke's family died. And then we have Lavellen... :\

At least my Adaar has a really sweet and healthy relationship with his 'rents. They think it's hilarious that he's fallen for a Tevinter mage.

Yeah, I liked the complexity of Hawke's family dynamics in DA2.  From what we see of Malcolm and Leandra, they're loving parents who care deeply about their children, but they're not always the best parents.  That really helped humanize the whole Hawke familiy to me.  They love each other, but they can be very flawed and dysfunctional, and that made me really feel for them.

Also I'm an only child IRL, so getting to explore the sibling dynamic from two angles (friendship Bethany and rivalry Carver) was really awesome.

At least my Adaar has a really sweet and healthy relationship with his 'rents. They think it's hilarious that he's fallen for a Tevinter mage.

<3 Dorian/Adaar so much.  My Adaar's mother is a former tamassran who fled with him when she realized he had magic.  She 100% approves of Dorian, since she and Dorian are the only two people in Thedas who can get my very boisterous Adaar to behave :D

Hmm, regarding my other PCs' families...

My Shepard is Earthborn + War Hero so if I remember the ME background correctly, Earthborn Shepard had no family and ran with a gang back in the day. xD

As for DA PCs (my canon ones anyway), according to Ashalle, my Mahariel's father (who was the former Keeper before Marethari) was slain and her mother abandoned Mahariel in grief over his death and never returned. Plus, the whole Tamlen thing. :(

My Hawke only has Carver, Uncle Gamlen, and Charade left.

So my Lavellan, I actually headcanon she was pretty happy with her family. She has her jolly father, her kicka$$ hunter mother, her twin brother, and a cousin (who I headcanon as the clan's Second) whom she's very close with. Not to mention she also has her group of friends. I imagine it would be hard for her to leave them again after she visits them in Wycome.

Haha, I love your quizzy's dad.

My Lavellen, being a mage, is a little cut off from most of her clan. Her dad - a hunter - died several years ago in a gruesome fight, so she's really protective of her mother. So Lavellen's only close relationship, asides from the keeper, is with her mother, the clan storyteller - she's a sweet thing, romantic, known for gentle, wouldn't hurt a fly, although I think Lavellen feels she lives a little bit too much in the clouds, and perhaps never got over her dad's death. Her mother also has a very personal + deep relationship with dalish history and spirituality - it's the one guiding light in her life, I think, that she believes will never leave her.

Spoiler

I suppose my Lavellen should be glad that her clan survived, and that her keeper has a smart head on her - still, she's honestly dreading telling them the news.

Ooh, family drama. My Lavellan has either both her parents, or her mother died from disease. Her dad was brought into the clan after fleeing an incident at one of Free Marches alienages and since the last craft master's apprentice died in scrimmage with some humans he filled in the role, eventually becoming the new craft master. He was respectful enough towards the dalish traditions and allowed himself to be branded, but he never took it to seriously. But he liked the old mythology and would tell Lavellan a more fleshed out version of the old tells, giving the Creators more personality and making them more like regular people. All the Creators had their faults, but they all cared about doing what was best for the people, well except for the Dread Wolf. He actually has his own unique take on the Dread Wolf's betrayal, believe that it wasn't so much out of pure malevolent trickery that motivated him, but instead he did it out of annoyance. He believed that the Dread Wolf was tired of being dragged into their wars and made a plan to stop it once and for all. He doesn't really depict the Dread Wolf as being pure evil, but instead characterized as being an apathetic butt rather then being out right malevolent. His stories fueled her devotion towards the Creators, though she was more devoted to her own interpretation of them. As for her mom, she is kinda like an elf version of Cassandra but a little less devout, which is why they got along.

Lets be honest, if this romance had a cliche Disney happy ending, would it be nearly as memorable?

Lol, I almost picture Weekes weeping bitter, bitter tears over his desk if asked to write a cliched Disney ending :)

I want a happy ending, myself, but like others have said, more like the sweet side of bittersweet. After all Solas has been through, and Lavellan too, I would love to see them with the hope of contentment in some capacity.

Mine has a very supportive father who is the keeper of another clan. Her mother died a few years ago, but had a very powerful impact on her life - she had also been first to the keeper. Both showed magical talents early and Lenalas was supposed to follow in her parents footsteps. That didn't work out with her not having magical talents, but she still knows a lot about magic. She was very distant from most people of her clan, but she soon became the leader of her clan's hunters after proving her ruthless warrior side - and thus made her daddy, aunt and her cousins very proud. She does not have any siblings, though. But she's got the support of two clans on her side, so she isn't alone.

I like to imagine that her father completely loses it once he learns that his very own daughter has a love-hate relationship with the Dread Wolf...but given his nerdy attitude, he'd probably just want to know a ton of stuff about him. He's probably as much of a magic nerd as Solas is.

"Can you describe his voice? What does he look like? Do you think he could give me some tips about magic? Woah, what was Arlathan like? Does he smell good? Do you know how to contact him?"

Spoiler

She's definitely not alone and in good hands. She's going to get through this. :D

You can have them for a half-hour, like the human warden's parents, but then they die in some horrific fashion that leaves your character traumatized. Also, like the human warden.

Can I just ask one of the Seramancers here, how do you reconcile yourself with her anti-elf attitudes? I want a fluffy, happy ending for just a brief change, and I know that Sera's is one of them. However I'm still a little put off by what she said after the Temple of Mythal... I recall she was rather rude about the Dalish having gotten it wrong. Is she gentler if you have high approval with her?

I have a sister from my dad's second marriage but she's a child, so I don't have life sibling dynamics, so it has always been books, TV, films, and real peoplw who inform this stuff for me. I haven't played DA2 with Carver yet, but I do love Bethany. I almost feel like playing with Carver would be like Fenris 2.0 in terms of rival rival rival ease. But I'd like to do it someday. My current replay has Bethany again.

I took Blackwall, Sera and Varric with my Solasmancing Lavellan through Trespasser and it was great   I got so much more chat with them then I did my Dorian/Cass/Cole mix and it was pretty fun stuff as well.

Also, Varric summed up the Solas revelation just perfectly with: "Damn it, Chuckles"

Saying what we were all thinking.

I agree with this, and this is what I was going for with my Lavellan.

I imagine there was good and bad both with her immediate biological family and clan as a whole, but the good ultimately outweighed the bad.

I headcanon that my girl's parents were city elves who fled to the Dalish when she started showing signs of magic around age 4-5, but her father was killed by Templars on the way. Her mother secretly blamed her for it for years, and rejected the Dalish culture and tried to imbue her children with city elf values, and became increasingly angry and bitter the more her children adopted the Dalish culture anyway.

While her relationship with her mother was a little strained because of her rejection of the Dalish, they also bonded as her mother taught her city elf values and stories. (Until her mother left the Dalish out of disgust the day she became a Dalish Keeper, but more on that below.) I imagine that while my girl endured requisite teasing for being a "flat-ear" and "seth-lin" when she was very young, she was still ultimately accepted by the Clan, made their First, and made many friends and had many good times with the Dalish.

I headcanon that during the main game her younger sister (born to the Dalish and 100% embraced their ways down to the accent) marched all the way over to Skyhold to make sure my Lady wasn't seduced by the "shemlen's religion," but not as a bully, just as a hot-headed but well-meaning teenage girl who just wanted to make sure her older sister didn't lose her way. (Though my girl had to send her back after a few days.)

I also imagine that my girl's mother sent an embittered letter from an alienage, saying something like, "So, the little alienage rat who tried to play the Dalish became the Herald of the human religion; what are the odds?" However, when they went to visit her, Cole sensed her mother's pain and "shook loose the pearl of pain," which ultimately caused her mother to break down crying and admit that she never really blamed my girl or the Dalish, she just missed her husband and her alienage family, and my girl and her mother slowly started to reconcile.

By the end of Trespasser,

Spoiler

None of it was perfect, but I imagine my girl had a fairly happy childhood and strong network of love and support despite the realistic flaws and differences between her city elf family and Dalish clan.

No, romancing Sera as an elf is very difficult and you have to really be flippant about your culture. So I decided not to. She's getting my human mage.

Romancing her with an Adaar would give max approval and be the easiest, but up to you. You can also flirt with Harding while she's around for approval.
