I really like my new Lavellan so far and my new trev too I started a week or two ago. II'll have to take screened tomorrow. I usually find a slider I like to use as a base from the Reddit slider sub, then tweak it how I want. Does wonders.

modern Thedas' ability to cope with change. After all, he makes a point of underestimating modern Thedas at least twice before breakfast.

Besides, modern Thedas is intrinsically more resilient to change than his civilization was. In a world with no aging, no gentle progression of generations, of course huge changes would be chaos.

Maybe he expects modern Thedas to be destroyed because that's how his people would have responded to such a change (indeed, that is how they responded). But, as he's so fond of reminding us, we aren't his people.

I go back to it often, but his banters with Varric are very telling about the positions he takes. Varric is forward looking. Solas looks to the past. Varric's side can be summed up as 'you can make a life for yourself however you can' as opposed to giving up and giving into despair or whatever else may affect you.

 

Solas thinks that the man on the island, alone after his wife and baby are dead is not living any sort of life. Sound familiar?

 

He knows people in modern Thedas are 'living' but he thinks they're basically at such a low level so as not to be worth it.

 

Solas' response to Cole's It's a Wonderful Life reference is very, very bleak, but it reminded me of what he said about 'if they have to die, I'd rather see them die in comfort'.

 

 

• Cole: It sees him ready to jump. Pain pounding, pulsing, life of frustration can finally fall, to freeze.
• Solas: Ah, yes.  
• Cole: It holds him high, shows the hole, were everything falls without him. He never needs to leave. He matters here. 
• Solas: That is one interpretation, yes. 
• Cole: You think it is different.
• Solas: I think he fell, and it held him as he died, leaving him with images that told him his life was worthwhile. 
• Cole: That's much sadder. But yes. Calm, comfort, as the cold takes him away.

Maybe modern Thedas can survive if he is successful so long as it isn't instant kill.  After all, the people of this world suffered through things like the Blights and are still around. They are more adaptable then Solas thinks. Sure, a lot of people will die, but that's the norm in Thedas.

I see the taking down of the veil, as long as it's not an instant "everyone dies" moment, like a natural catastrophe on a global scale. Those you can survive, somewhat, but still many will die in the aftermath, if only because no one is prepared for it. at best, you'll have an event like Katrina. Bad but civilzation goes on. At worse, you have the extinction of the dinosaurs where the catastrophe is on such a huge scale that even if life itself survive (as it always does) the civilizations of Thedas don't. If the second scenario is the right one and even if the taking down of the veil might be better in the long run, the kind of casualties we're talking about here are more than Quizzie can bear to think about. There has to be another way.
