Hi!  I have my kitty hug all lined up and ready to go.

I finished it days ago, and I'm still a mess of feels.  A less stormy mess of feels, but I think there might be a teensy bit of lingering resentment at Solas if all the grumbling I did while playing Adaar is any indication :P

The notion that Elves are innately spiritual or possessing some inherent supernatural qualities that have a great past is not new. What is new is Bioware's treatment of the trope where they turn it on its head.

Here's a description of Elves from D&D 5th Edition

Elves are a magical people of otherworldly grace, living in the world but not entirely part of it. They live in places of ethereal beauty, in the midst of ancient forests or in silvery spires glittering with faerie light, where soft music drifts through the air and gentle fragrances waft on the breeze....Ancient divides among the elven people resulted in three main subraces: high elves, wood elves, and dark elves, who are commonly called drow.

Here's description of Mer from Elder Scrolls

The Aldmer (meaning "First Folk" or "Elder Folk") were the original Merethic Era proto-mer who settled Summerset Isle and most of mainland Tamriel. They are often said to have been the first technologically sophisticated inhabitants of Nirn, although some believe this distinction belongs to the Hist. The ancestors to the beast people, the Argonians and Khajiit, existed at the time in aboriginal, preliterate communities, and were easily displaced by the more advanced Aldmer. The Aldmer allegedly came from a lost city-continent called Aldmeris, but a number of sources, including the revered Elder Scrolls , claim that this is pure myth....As the Aldmer spread throughout Tamriel, they evolved away from one another, physically and culturally, into the various types of mer known today. Some remained in Summerset Isle and became the Altmer. The first emigrants to the mainland settled in Valenwood and became the Bosmer. Morrowind was colonized by both the Dwemer and later the Chimer (forerunners of the Dunmer). There were also the Ayelids of Cyrodiil, the Snow Elves of Skyrim, the Maormer of Pyadonea, and the Orcs or Orsimer, a group of Altmer who worshipped Trinimac and were transformed when he became Malacath. They then migrated to the province of High Rock and founded Orsinium. High Rock is also home to the Bretons, mixed-blood descendants of the native Nedes and (non-Orc) Aldmeri settlers.

The Elvhen of Thedas is a combination and some of the traditional tropes about Elves with Bioware's spin on it. Here's what I think of the Elvhen

The first of the Ancient Elvhen are most likely Spirits of the Fade that decided to evolve into something else, into something real. The Ancient Elvhen possessed an extremely advanced civilization, especially when it comes to magics. Their innate connection to the Fade made them immortal and capable of immense magical power. However, for reasons that are still unclear (we know it involves wars, Titans, Void, Forgotten Ones, murder, etc), the Elven civilization was destroyed by the creation of the Veil, which was initiated by Fen'Harel, alternatively known as Solas. Now a fragment of what they once were, the Elvhen in Thedas have branched of into three main groups - Ancient Elves, City Elves and Dalish Elves. There is also some suspicion that Qunari might be Elves who were part of a ritual involving blood magic and dragon blood in ancient time.

In a way, I guess it's like sexual orientation. He just isn't attracted to anyone who isn't, as you put it, intrinsically connected to the fade.

I can't guess Solas' reasons, but considering how much he loves the Fade and all connected to it, and ancient elven culture, society, magic, values, etc... I think those things are really important to him. It might not even be like "sexual orientation" (which I suspect is a gross oversimplification, if you don't mind my bluntness), just about valuing those traits, valuing them in another, and wanting to share your life with someone who shares and values and experiences it with you right back.

It's always been difficult for me to understand sexual preferences and why some people are only attracted to females and not males etc. because I'm a bisexual (most would consider me pan if that helps in understanding me better). Gender and other things don't play into attraction for me, and it is almost usually the personality, or as Solas would put it, their "spirit."

If solas was a woman I would be totally crazy about him just the same. If he was a Qunari, dwarf, or who knows what, I still wouldn't care.

Um... huh? No offense, but in your last post you were upset about Solas not being into humans just because humans look physically similar to elves, which is itself based on looks rather than mind, spirit, or personality. "We're not super short and we don't have crazy horns or are twice his size. Humans are physically just like elves, just more curvy/robust, especially the females."

Personally, it's very likely that I'm asexual because I experience little to no physical attraction or desire at all, and what few trace amounts I do quickly fade away. I'm panromantic though, so I'm capable of forming emotional and romantic attachments to people of any gender, gender identity, or even level of conventional "attractiveness." To me, love and attraction is on a purely intellectual, spiritual, and emotional level. So in that way, I can understand Solas being attracted only to those he feels he can connect with on a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual level.

I guess Solas must believe that being elven effects the spirit directly. The implications of that ... are pretty huge, if you think about it.

I don't know. For all we know, he might be right.

When he talks about the Fade, he talks about being able to experience the thoughts and emotions of others as though he was there. He's witnessed countless battles from the perspectives of those who were there. Perhaps elven souls "feel" different from human or dwarf or qunari.

He also talks about a "collective consciousness," which might be related to those connected to the Fade being able to share and experience each other's thoughts and feelings. Like Cole, who's able to read the thoughts and emotions of those near him, like they're experiencing... a collective consciousness.

In fact, during Trespasser,

Spoiler

Perhaps Solas doesn't just "think" being elven affects the spirit directly; perhaps he knows from firsthand experience.

I've been re-watching the epilogue scenes, and suddenly something hit me:

In my main game Cassandra and Lavellan talked about rebuilding the Seekers, and Cassandra decided to do that. And then it hit me: the Seekers, they Seek, right! They're, like, ideal candidates for seeking! Seeking a certain someone, that is.

Especially since

Spoiler

I've even went as far as thinking that the protagonist of DA4 might be a Seeker, but that won't happen, because another Chantry protagonist doesn't make much sense (especially a non-human). But it's an interesting line of thought, I decided.

Sorry if I offended you in any way. When I said sexual orientation, I meant that it is just who he is, as in a part of him that is deeply ingrained into his being and changes who he is attracted to/has the ability to love romantically and/or sexually.

As for my comments about the physicality about humans, I was just being a butthurt human myself. Though I know it's wrong, it bothers me that if I was in Thedas he wouldn't even look at me twice, while I'd be basically drooling at his feet. I know it's wrong, but I still wish I was an elf. The part of the plan where I get into Thedas would be difficult however (lol wonder why). Anyways, my weird-a** fantasies aside ...

My main point was that whatever makes him only able to love elves is probably something more deep than what is obvious.

Solas simply prefers female Elves. That's all there is to his sexuality.

It is the equivalent of Varric who prefers female Dwarves or more accurately, Bianca. It is equivalent of Morrigan and Cassandra, both of whom prefer men.

As for the reasons for Solas preferring female Elves, it might be that he finds females of other races sexually unappealing or sexually unattractive to him.

You have to remember that we are talking about a powerful Elven dreamer demigod mage who spent most of his live (& that's centuries) around Elves right up until a year before the Breach occurred.

Over-complicating matters is a pointless endeavor.

Oh no, don't apologize. I'm sorry to freak out... again. (I'm sorry, I seem to do it a lot on this thread.  :( )

When you define it like that, I guess "sexual orientation" seems to be the closest analogy we have to understanding his feelings.

Oh, I understand. Yes, I guess it can be discouraging thinking that if you were in his world, he wouldn't be interested. I don't know though. I'd like to think that if I was transported into Thedas, I would automatically become an elf. I feel more "elfy" than human, and look a little more like it, and culturally connect with them more, and I've always been more on the intuitive and spiritual side, and so on.

I mean, in real life we're all technically non-magic humans because magic and other humanoid races don't exist, but if whatever magic got us into that world was possible, wouldn't it also be possible that those of us that would have the capacity or sensitivity to magic could become mages, and those with traits in common with... at least elves or dwarves become elves or dwarves too?

As it is, I can't play a human because I just don't connect with human characters. Trying to step into their shoes feels like trying to push a size fourteen foot into a size four shoe. It just doesn't fit, and it requires me to hack off pieces of myself to even try, and ultimately I just can't. Playing an elf is like slipping on an old, worn, comfortable pair of shoes, and playing a Qunari or dwarf is like slipping on a less comfortable but still flashy shoes that I enjoy wearing on a night out in the town. Whatever magic that could get me into Thedas must sense that about me and change me accordingly once I got there, so I don't feel bad about Solas liking elves.

And... in talking about this, I just put too much thought into it... Moving on!

This...This is how I feel too. I connect with the elven characters and prefer their histories, cultures and the like. As for the dreamer and Fade and spiritual connection that really resonates with me. As one that dreams vivid dreams I would expect to cross over as an elf mage with sominari powers. Watch out DW my Quizzy is far cleverer than you think, and she can find you in the Fade!

I tried to tell myself I'd romance Cullen this one time. But nope. I was too weak. Right when he starts talking about the wonders of the fade i'm already too far gone.

Yep. On my way to start chatting up Cullen (he looks much better on ultra mesh, shader and texture..), I was silly enough to strike up a word with Solas. He started to talk about dreams and ancient ruins and my poor lost Lavellan just aquired a huge crush. Cullen is so... bland for her. Aspiring, although still very weak mage, fascinated by Fade? Bring it on, Solas.

.... looking at this screenshot now, makes me wonder. Is he happy to see her? :D :D :D
