I'm still thinking about Solas' origins and how it hints that he might have been a spirit at the beginning who took physical form at Her request. Yet, Solas also seems to have memories of his childhood, childhood where he seems mortal enough. My brain couldn't quite compute the two of them (I'm supposing Solas never lied, other than by omission, to the Inquisitor in the base game and so that those memories are real). Then what? Well, I wonder if he's not even more like Cole than we realize. We know Cole came to the physical world because the real Cole was suffering and this touched him so much that he manifested.

 

What if Solas' story is similar? What if there was an elf once that had the childhood that Solas talks about. Maybe he even befriended Solas-the-spirit. But then, something happened. I kinda want to link this to the story of the Sinner, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. The elf-Solas dies, Spirit-Solas lingers. Then, She (my guess is Mythal) requests that he takes physical form. To serve her? Why? Maybe elf-Solas belonged to her, and a bit like the Avvar's spirit taking the names and identity of older spirits, soemthing similar happened to Solas? In any case, he served her for some time, until he "burned her off his face" (took off the vallaslin and gained his freedom that way).

 

All that to say, I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this. I just find interesting that Solas is so fascinated by Cole, so repulsed by the idea of binding him and so against the idea of him continuing her journey into becoming human. If Solas never quite wanted to take physical form at first, it would explain a few things. But the fact he might have attached himself to an older, physical-being elf, could also explain he has memories of a childhood he didn't get as a spirit. Or... maybe I'm reaidng way too much into it and spirit at the time might have had childhood. Who knows...

If really he was once Mythal's servants and bound to her, his reaction to the Well of Sorrows make even more sense. He doesn't want the Inquisitor to be bound as he was bound, whatever he thinks of Mythal. After all, Patrick Weekes said his relationship with Mythal was complicated.

Reading that many of you are experiencing the same thing makes me feel not quite as crazy, because people who haven't played that I talk to seem to be a bit... confused about why I've attached so much emotion to this.

Maybe he isn't a spirit, but all ancient elves HAD been spirits at one point in their lives? Mythal, being a motherfigure in elven lore and history manifested as (one of) the first elven people. She used her powers to draw others into the world as this new race and the old elven culture was born. Everyone was deeply connected to the Fade and could feel emotions very clearly because they had only been spirits with a single purpose in mind. So, Mythal drew the spirit that would become Solas to her, and he manifested as the elf we know. He does not have to talk about a childhood as a CHILD, after all. Creating the Veil severed their deep connection to the Fade, thus making them mortal and 'human'. It would make sense for Solas to argue against the idea of Cole as fully human, because Cole would sever HIS connection to the Fade that way and would repeat in a very small scale what Solas did to all elves.

modern Thedas' ability to cope with change. After all, he makes a point of underestimating modern Thedas at least twice before breakfast.
Besides, modern Thedas is intrinsically more resilient to change than his civilization was. In a world with no aging, no gentle progression of generations, of course huge changes would be chaos.
Maybe he expects modern Thedas to be destroyed because that's how his people would have responded to such a change (indeed, that is how they responded). But, as he's so fond of reminding us, we aren't his people.

You got to wonder how Solas got so powerful if he started so low though (low being relative, but still). Did he ever possess as much power as the evanuris at the time? He must have if he raised the veil. Another theory could be that he never was quite as powerful, but Mythal helped him with the start of the intricate spell that would be used, until she was murdered. By then though, it was advanced enough that he could go through with it. If this is so, I wonder if the raising of the veil might not have been so brutal with the elves and their civilization if Solas had had Mythal's help to the end.

I'm at work and it makes it hard to do research, but it'f in his dialogue about his past and being a young elf growing up in a small village where there isn't much else to do but dream and so visit the fade. Maybe someone else can give you more of his dialogue.

Ok, I forgot about that one. But I still don't think there's enough evidence to say he was a child once. He couldn't just say "I wasn't actually born, I manifested from the fade" to Leliana. And "I grew up" could mean "I gained more experience as a being with a body".

The whole dichotomy of Solas' existence is defined by his spiritual and physical self. In my theory, he is both a product of the Fade as well as a person like any other, so his childhood, if my theory is correct, would be extremely telling towards the way spirits were imbedded into Elvhen society. 

 

If solas was originally a spirit, did he roam a village in the north? Did he have friends from the village? 

 

There's more evidence pointing towards that Solas was originally an Elvhen spirit, and the fact that he grew up among The People is very interesting.

Both theories would make a lot of sense. He either gained power through some form of training (or his spirit was rare and marvellous as is) or through Mythal's help. It would also make sense for him to free slaves if this were true, as he never wanted to be bound in the first place - but he either let it happen because of Mythal or it made him into this Pride 'demon' that she could use to further her agenda. 

 

Also: This would explain why Solas does not consider modern elves his people. Not because they were severed by the Veil, but because they had never been spirits in their early stages of life. Thus, only spirits and the ancient elves would be his people, since they are basically two sides of the same coin, connected by the same roots. Modern elves never came to exist the way he and the elves of old did, thus they aren't filled with the same amount of deep emotions and can never dream to truly understand him. But Quizzy is different, somehow.

I think the key point is "there was little to interest a young man, especially one gifted with magic". Well, why would he say "especially one gifted with magic" in the

pre-Veil world where magic was omnipresent? I think the village may be where he ended up after making the Veil. At which point he looks around, goes "this world sucks and I need to regain my power" and takes a couple-millenia power nap.

I suggested this the other day right after playing the DLC and people debunked it based on what Solas says in the DLC. If you ask him if he's like Mythal he says something like "this is all I have ever been." Of course he could be simply omitting the fact that he has always been a elf/spirit hybrid...that Solas didn't exist until the two were joined as one.

I got this armor, it's not a spoiler, you get it after you do some war table post Temple of Mythal, I don't remember what I chose, perhaps it influenced whether or not I got it, I think I went with the Tevinter route, with Josephine?

 

I put it on Solas for the final battle haha, I didn't leave him in it though, I gave him his old one back (which I crafted oh so lovingly with Fade-Touched Silverite) since it's better and the sentinel armor is one of a kind.

Take it from someone who sucks at combat: rogues make NM a lot easier. The faster a boss dies, the less time I have to spend avoiding its massive damage attacks.

If there's a really annoying boss like an emissary, pitch grenade + mighty offense on Sera and Cole + mark of death from Cole + flask of lightning from Sera + stealth, then hidden blades from Cole + trigger mark of death = annoying boss is dead. Trespasser combat spoiler:

I brought dagger!Sera, Cole, Dorian, and assassin!quisitor to the Saarath fight, and discovered that he suffers from the same over-DPS bug as Corypheus. He died so fast that he got stuck at 1 hp... and hovered in the air in mid-leap, unkillable.

Pro-tip: on that fight, make sure he's summoned at least one wave of demons before you drop his health close to 0.
