Oh, fellow Solas lovers, I am sure this has been discussed ad nauseum here, but if anyone wants to give a brief run-down or point me to a post/discussion so you don't have to repeat yourselves...

But why are the elves disappearing and helping Solas? Are they not also mortal, and so will die when he destroys the Veil? And if so, just who is Solas destroying the Veil FOR if all his people (save the Evanuris) are dead?

 

Anyone else upset that they didn't have the chance, as a Lavellan, to offer their support? I'm not sure my Alin would have taken it, but it would have been nice to have the option. I bet some Lavellans would have taken it.

First thing is we don't know for sure if that's actually where they're going. I've also seen speculation that they're going to join Flemythal, or that there's some kind of gathering of clans and elves, or that they were Qunari elf sleeper agents (see Tallis' arc) going north since the time for spying on the south is over now that the Qunari are invading for real.

 

Second thing is we don't know if the elves that are leaving are modern elves or not, for sure. Some think they might be ancient elven agents. We know he has some at least.

 

Third thing is we don't know for sure if his plans WILL definitely result in the deaths of modern elves.

if they ARE going to join him and if they WILL die, I see a few possibilities

 

- He's deceiving them, either by lying or through omission - they're following him and his directions, but don't know that what they're actually helping to execute is a plan that will result in their deaths;

- They're under his sway somehow by means more.. arcane. As seen by him freezing Qunari with a blink, he seems to be incredibly powerful now. That and his Dreamer-esque powers.. consider the sway Feynriel seemed to have over Orlanna; YES I know he hates anti-freedom and anti-freethought stuff like binding but we also know he does horrible things that he sees as necessary in pursuit of his goals. He's not going to 'lol I guess I won't save my people after all just cuz I find this one thing disgusting to do'

- it's like a doomsday cult. There will be some modern elves who feel so downtrodden, in such despair at their lot in modern Thedas that they're willing to die to bring about (technically, restore) a future where elves can live freely in power and glory. And there will be some who are so angry and resentful at being shat on by other Thedosians that they want vengeance on the world (which they see as having unfairly and unjustly dealing them this hand) and the perpetrators of their oppression so badly that damn it all, if they'll die bringing that about then so be it.

 

In this regard he sees them as tools to be used, chess pieces to move around a board in pursuit of his goals (not taking pleasure in their demise in the same way as how you wouldn't take pleasure in dispatching a useful work-animal in pursuit of some necessary goal like sustaining your family through a harsh winter or something). And from their perspective, they haven't gone through the Dalish Culture Revelation Ringer like the Dalish Inquisitor. We don't know how widely such truths have been spread among Dalish Elves by the time of Trespasser's end. Likely most of these Dalish elves don't know the truth of what the past was like and about the real nature of their 'gods'. To them they'd only see a god from their religion walked out of legend into the world, it's not a stretch that some of the uninformed faithful might follow him, even if he is the Dread Wolf as opposed to one of the Creators. Some might do so out of fear.

They aren't though. Felassan (yes he's dead now but he was around). Abelas. Abelas' gang. (yes they can be dead but it demonstrates something) 'Your people yet linger'. I think he's spent some time awaking some ancient sleepers up, freeing others from their bindings to things like protecting a temple site [Abelas and co], etc. Not many but a few and that's something. And there are implications of enclaves of mysterious elves kicking around, like the weird elves in the Tirashan from the Last Court and [imo] the elves that sent the Red Hart seem pretty mysterious too. And of sleepers masked in a mirror, hiding and hurting. could be the Evanuris or other ancients.

iirc In Mark of the Assassin Fenris tells Merrill there will be a Arlathvhen in Halamshiral 'soon' but thats the only detail I can recall on the timing of next or most recent arlathvhen

 

Keepers and other leaders and elders of a clan are referenced to meet. I think First would either go or stay behind to mind clan while Keeper's away.

 

I thought the clans themselves would go tho. We know Dalish trade people between clans a lot more than we originally thought i.e. it is not just mages. I suspect much of this to occur at Arlathvhen.

 

Also a hahren'al is a gathering of hahrens during arlathvhen. why a word for this if only keepers go? and why a separate word for gathering.. at.. a gathering..

 

I also think it's highly likely an emergency arlathvhen might be called in times of great need e.g. EVERYTHING WE EVER KNEW IS WRONG AND ALSO THE DREAD WOLF IS HERE
