Agreed. 

 

Im cool with people hating Solas if they have an argument to back it  up or they are just turned off by his character.  I'm down. 

 

Everybody loves Anders and I just found him horribly insufferable and wanted to kill him in the first Act.  But I'm not wandering around berating people trying to support the writing or why he's worth enjoying as a character.   

 

But Solas is a well written and complex character.  Depending on how the next game goes and Bioware does not follow the tradition of dropping the ball with their antagonists, he may actually be my favorite(and that's definitely without the romance).  There is so much to pick apart about his character. A lot to love. A lot to hate.  I hope people actually see that at least.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the whole "Mythal appears in my dreams" servant thing happens after the Cory fight? Because I heard that it happens after Temple Of Mythal and not only after the ending.

 

If it happened after ToM and not the ending, then I'd say that we should be wondering whether it was indeed Solas who's sending the signal to unite. It may as well have something to do with the whole watery figure emerging after the Well Of Sorrows was emptied, either by Morrigan or Inquisitor. 

 

I mean, it MIGHT still have something to do with Solas, since - when asked for advice - he says "She (Morrigan) is right of only one thing - we should be taking the power that lies in the Well".

 

So despite being conflicted as to who should take it (he either distrusted both Morrigan and Inquisitor OR distrusted Morrigan, but was concerned for Inquisitor) he was eager to do it anyhow, instead of destroying it. I think it's because he wanted to unlock the power which lied BENEATH the Well.

 

The Mythal dreams can happen before ToM.  It triggers randomly in VR.

 

Speaking of stuff in VR: I walked past a noble talking to his servant (who was raised Dalish) and the noble was all 'ah yes, you were Dalish.  I forget that because you don't have those stupid markings'

So, I was patient for *checks calendar* almost a week since Trespasser was released but now I really want info on the next DA game lol.  Oh well we may not have to wait as long as we previously thought if they follow a similar timeline to the one between DA2 and DAI.

 

DA2 was released in March of 2011 and I believe they started work on DAI that same year.  DAI was officially announced in 2013 (I think).  So if they're doing a next game (and I'm assuming they are) then they've already started work on it and we *may* hear an announcement sometime next year.  Then DAI was released in November of 2014 so 3.5ish years after DA2.  Also, DAO was released in 2009 and DA2 was released in 2011 which was only 2 years, although I think the extra time spent on DAI was good.

 

Of course it all depends on what engine they'll use and how large the game is going to be but if they reuse the Frostbite 3 engine then they already have experience with that.

 

tl;dr .. If they're going to make a next game then I think we should hear something by next year.

I've seen some people saying that the way he talks in Trespasser sounds different than usual.  I would actually say that if you listen specifically to the bit where he says he "lay in dark and dreaming sleep ..." then the cadence is *very* similar to when you first talk to him in Haven.  I'm not convinced Mythal is anywhere in there.  I think we'll end up seeing Morrigan + Mythal at a later date though.

 

I also think Calpernia would be a great idea for a companion in the next game as we don't know if she actually dies even if you fight her.  Although I'm not sure about that; I haven't fought her since I can convince her to leave peacefully.

 

So far they've had a companion return from the previous game to be a companion in the next (kinda, Anders counts right?).  Iron Bull and Blackwall could be dead, Vivienne is doing her political stuff with the Circle or is Divine, Varric is Viscount of Kirkwall, Cole could be in the Fade, Cassandra is possibly rebuilding the Seekers or is Divine, and not Solas for obvious reasons heh.   That leaves Dorian or Sera.  The most obvious choice would be Dorian since he's in Tevinter already.

I've seen suggestions that maybe he's bound by a geas himself, or being compelled towards his eventual goal. Not sure what I feel about that, but I suppose it could be the case. Might also explain why it seems as if he wants to be stopped. He can't stop himself, so...

 

Mostly conjecture, I guess.

 

But it does make me think of how... panicked? Alarmed? He sounded when offered the Well.

On the subject of Anders - this might be a bit controversial to say here - but am I right in getting the impression that Solas is getting less hate and causing less arguments than Anders did at end of DA2? Even though Anders' misdeeds don't really compare to the scale of Solas' and arguably he has much better motivations on top of that?

I mean, I put that partially down to the fact that Anders is probably much more grating as a character (I didn't like him much at all, found him very frustrating, despite agreeing with him 80% of the time), and also because some fans tried to defend some of his actions. I don't think Solas fans are doing the same with this 'destroy the world' shtick.

 

Still, it's sad that one's labelled as irredeemable for wanting to bring down an arguably corrupt institution in a violent fashion, and the guy who wants to bring back the glory of his lost empire by destroying the world apparently can be redeemed?

Interesting!  I don't read the comics so I didn't know Mae was in them or that she had connections to Alistair and Varric.  Given that, I could see her being a companion.

I never cared for Anders, but exactly, I'm not telling people who want to defend the character that there's something wrong with them. Anders had a place in the story, and his own story was interesting to follow to its end even if his personality didn't do it for me. Others may not find Solas as complex, or as interesting and tragic as I do, but I'll be damned if they're going to tell anyone who thinks he is that they are stupid or are a Nazi-loving genocidal crazy. It's a story, folks. We want to follow it and see where it goes. We also happen to like the character that's leading the way. There is nothing wrong with that, or us, any more than there's anything wrong with people who don't like the character of Solas. It's only when one side or another twists their panties in a personal tizzy over it that it gets irritating.

 

You don't have to like him, and you don't have to hate him. You can even outright love him. You just don't get to be a dick to those on the other side of the divide.

 

I think the most jarring is that people go out of their way to make hate threads. I mean, let's make hate threads for every characters we dislike, that will go well right? I could make an thread about my negative feelings on Vivienne, but that would be petty, so I choose to refrain. It's just so stupid and pointless.

 

Anyways. I for one didn't hated Anders. I mean, he talked a lot of crap and whined more then any companion. There was even this one banter with Aveline were I wanted to punch Anders. But in the end I just felt pitty. He was just reduced to such an depressing state, I just told him to leave and never come back.

I really think you're onto something with that.

Solas being a former slave of Mythal makes a lot of sense. Poor guy.  He's like the mage that wanted to become a Seeker and accidently created the Rite of Tranquility.  He's a slave, figures out a way to free himself (and that the gods are just mortals like the rest of the elvhen) and starts freeing everyone else. And these people prompty start worshipping him as a god.

No wonder Solas gets pissed at the Inquisitor if they start setting themselves up as a god.

No-one here has really defended Solas' plan. Mostly we've spent time trying to understand his motivation and peel back the layers of the pain onion.  A lot of Anders fans, however, will say there was nothing wrong with what he did.

But yes, Anders' personality is grating, and that is what leads to a lot of hate (sorry, Cee). It's the main reason I don't like him anyway. Plus, there's his fairly offensive dismissal of Hawke and Fenris' relationship and Nice Guy attitude towards her if unromanced.

I think part of the problem isn't that people are saying Anders couldn't be redeemed but you weren't even given a choice to try to stop him.  If you were given a chance to talk him out of it then ok and you're given the option to try to convince Solas to change his mind at the end of Trespasser so it gives, at the very least, the possibility of redemption.  This did not exist for Anders at all so we have no idea if we could have dissuaded him from blowing up the Chantry.

Sera does, after you complete the first quest - she'll ask you about whether the elven gods things you discovered in Fen'Harel's sanctury bothered you, after which she'll say that she was sorry Solas was left. It's a really sweet moment.

 

So does Vivienne, as well, in her first cutscene (it totally threw me, we were in the middle of spa day and everything).

 

Combined with some of Cole's dialogue in some of the 'Listen to Cole' sections - he mentions Solas at least once - I always felt like his absence was being felt during the DLC, even if only mildly.

She is! She was suppose to have a much larger role but a lot of that had to be cut for space. Which makes me hopeful that she's going to be in the gam and have her character expanded on there.  It's also telling that she has a huge entry in the second WOT book.

I think Weekes mentioned at that scene in Crestwood Solas was on the verge of totally spilling his guts (and then chickening out) and then he was going to give up all his plans to stay with you but then realised he couldn't not try to fix his mistake and so he dumped you.

I think it's personality as you say.  Like...if he was more affable or calm and chill he'd probably have less hate.  I understood why he did what he did.  And gave him actual consideration. I just really could not stand him.

As for Solas - his past crimes are incredibly past.  They were horrible but potentially the only way. But regardless they are an abstract pain to a modern thedosian and likely to most players. They don't see that immediate hurt.  So it's like 'why should i care?'

 

As for future...he hasn't actually done anything yet.  You could potentially still stop them. Or he won't go through with them yet.  Yes you can have rage at him, but like...he didn't actually do much of anything and he can stop. And to be fair to Solas, he tells you he is doing this and giving you time. Anders manipulates you and never says anything until it's too late.

 

Also, honestly, his fandom is notoriously awful.  I think - at this point - a lot of the rage at him is spite over the fandom. I have seen some NASTY Anders defenders. I mean vile.  That's not everyone obviously but it's the unfortunate and ugly public face of the fans.
