I think choosing any idealistic, elf-sympathetic - not just Briala and Orlais - options will likely become trickier in DA4 because of Fen'Harel. They'll be considered too destabilizing or an invitation to infiltration by giving elves even just breadcrumbs worth of power.

I also think the chances of elves becomin random enemies will go up 100x. I wonder if they'll introduce options to be mildly racist in dialogue (think Mass Effect 1) to chime in with the elves changed status.

I think Orlais will be find with Gaspard or Celene ruling any of the alliance options between the 3 will create a whole load of instability imo.

Orlais and Fereldan are both ultimately screwed. Neither of them have an heir apparent, right? Celene and Briala can't have kids together. Anora's probably infertile. Alistair and the Warden have the taint. I don't know about Gaspard.

So I guess this means the future sparkly glowy immortal spirit child of Solas and Lavellan will become the all powerful unchallenged ruler of southern Thedas. That is, after Solas' army of ancient elves put down the stupid shems and Lavellan closes the rift in Solas' heart.

Until doing so becomes in convenient to her rule, then she'll drop Briala and the elves to the wayside to placate the nobles to secure her own power, just like she did before.

Besides, their relationship is toxic and unbalanced. Celene holds all the power, and has abused it. There is something really twisted about

having Briala's whole family killed and then keeping her unwittingly as a lover, and fetishizing her skin and elven features, and racially diminunizing her before that all their lives.

I cannot pretend my girl knew about their relationship, but she knew Celene had started to help the elves until doing so upset the nobles and she massacred them to ensure her own power, and knew she could not entrust the fair treatment of elves to this woman.

Between that and Gaspard wanting to make elf hunting a legal sport, the elves are getting the short end of the stick anyway. at least, I'm hoping that by having Briala at Celene's side, in the light, will allow Briala to manoeuvre favorably in favor of the elves. I just can't stand Gaspard and will never have him on the throne and my Inquisitor can't stand even thinking of letting a murder she can prevent happen in front of her just the sake of political expediency. Maybe it's a weakness of hers (she also refused to have that young noble woman married off for the sake of an alliance, and got the other young noble's back when it came to refusing to return to her family) but she just won't. I'll be waiting to see if there's any consequences in DA4 to reconciling Celene and Briala.

 

By the end of the winter Palace though, if she could have knocked both Celene and Gaspard unconscious and made Briala Empress, she'd have done it lol. She was so disgusted with the whole thing.

I need to vent for a minute about something unrelated to Solas. Personal rant.

My husband has gotten it into his head that we should move from Indiana to Orlando. I think he thinks he's going to spend all day golfing and going to theme parks. But I grew up in Florida and I'm not at all convinced I should move back- but I'm not against moving somewhere. We've been trying to get pregnant and to no avail and I think maybe a change of scenery would do us both good- but I don't know where I should move, except I'd like to move back to California and he's not having it (too expensive), and then I thought maybe out east somewhere and it's stressing me out, and I just want to lay in bed all day and play dragon age.

I just want to give you an internet hug. It's a difficult decision. In the mean time, we're here and will continue talking about Solas

With any luck, it'll wind up being less elves vs. everyone and more ancient elves vs. modern Thedas.  At least from what Solas describes, that's how he sees it.  Even if he now sees modern Thedosians as people, he doesn't see them as "his people."

I cannot pretend my girl knew about their relationship, but she knew Celene had started to help the elves until doing so upset the nobles and she massacred them to ensure her own power, and knew she could not entrust the fair treatment of elves to this woman.

 

I headcanoned that Vivienne, Leliana, and Josephine would have given Lavellan a crash course in the recent Game before dumping her in the deep end at Halamshiral.  So she knows what happened in broad strokes, and she knows some of the gossip and whispers (like, for example, the rumor that Celene and Briala were lovers since WORST KEPT SECRET).  But she doesn't personally know any of the people or their motivations, so she has to form her judgments based on what she actually sees at Halamshiral.

 

If anything, her disgust for the Orlesians made her a better player of the Game.  She was able to depersonalize them, the same way Solas does, and act with a ruthlessness that's at odds with her usual personality.  *shudder*

I try to see from other's pont of view, but that was... cold, even for him. I didn't want to believe Felassan's mysterious superior who likely murdered him for failing was Solas, but now... with so much evidence... I'm honestly glad my girl didn't know about that, because I think that would be the moment she stopped trying to understand and reason with him and just tell him that's monstrous. (I try to have her avoid making condemning statements, but I think that would be the point where she said he crossed the line.)

I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but that's something I have trouble reconciling about Solas right now. =(

If you watch the version of Solas's Trespasser dialogue with negative approval, that's the Solas who killed Felassan.  Cold, goal-driven, and dispassionate.  He still doesn't want to kill zillions of people, but it doesn't bother him much either.  

 

If anything, it gives me hope.  The Inquisitor's friendship, respect, and potentially love really change him.  I think he's also more compassionate during Inquisition because he's dealing with the guilt of having caused so much suffering via Corypheus, when he really didn't mean to.

the only thing I can't really forgive about Solas is the possible killing of Felassan? I mean, he has done many terrible things, but they were honestly for what he thought was the greater good. Created the Veil? It was to free the elves and save the world. Wants to destroy the world? It's to restore Elvhenan and the elves. Knows he'll likely kill anyone? At least he honestly sees them as akin to Tranquil. But he KNEW Felassan was a person, an ally, even a friend, and he killed him because he dared disagree with him.

I didn't want to believe Felassan's mysterious superior who likely murdered him for failing was Solas, but now... with so much evidence... Hadn't thought of that.  Interesting possibility, though if I were an elf living in Thedas, I might ask a few questions about WTF was happening before disappearing off into the wilderness

I was actually a bit disappointed that this wasn't a choice we could make as my Lavellan would have kept the story of Fen'Harel for herself for the exact reason that 1) she doesn't want to cause a panic in humans toward the elves and makes things worse for the elves and 2 ) didn't want elves thinking it's a good idea to join Solas' team. She would have wanted to keep things for herself as long as she can. But then, there,s a reason Leliana's always been the most used of her advisors. My Lavellan loves her secrets. Things are on a need to know basis with her

But at least Briala is pulling the strings with Gaspard, and he's not good enough at The Game to assassinate/get the better of Briala or the Inquisitor. Celene pulls the strings in her and Briala's relationship, and she hasn't hesitated to yank, strange with, or cut the strings before.

Besides, I get rather sadistic pleasure in giving Gaspard the throne with Briala as overseer. Its like the noble in Sera's quest, "Sure, you can join the Inquisition. We'll also take your lands and titles." Or Corypheus at the end. "You wanted into the Fade?" She sent him into the Fade in shreds. Same with Gaspard. "You wanted the throne? Here is your throne--oh and by the way, Briala calls all the shots, and if you disobey her, we'll expose and ruin you. What? You thought you'd actually be in charge?" Played him at his own game and loved it, and now he has to sign off on laws to help elves instead of hunting them.

I find that more satisfying than giving the keys of the kingdom back to the elf massacrer and hoping she won't turn on them again.

I like that decision for the fact there's no good option there. All possible decision suck for different reasons. I would have loved blackmailing all 3 to work together and wash my hands off the whole thing but I knew that it wasn't stable long term.

I think they missed a good opportunity to make it player choice, but I'll suppose it was because everyone needed to finish with the same general world state : Inquisitior story of Fen'Harel is somewhat known (and rumors are probably going thorugh allienages like wildfire) but a lot of people don't believe yet.

To be honest, I can see some justification for it. Felassan's loyalty was in question. He had deliberately failed in his mission because he was starting to believe in Briala and her cause. I feel bad for saying this, because I liked Felassan, and I know none of us are comfortable with the cold and calculating side of Fen'Harel, but yeah, I can see why Fen'Harel did it.

I posted this before, but I'd never be able to find it now.

 

Essentially, I also felt like that at first when the Felassan bit was confirmed. But I realize that it serves to give us an example of Solas as he was in his year of plotting. He was cold. Felassan said the elves are stronger, than Solas thinks, he began sympathizing....seeing them as people. It was a weakness he couldn't abide.

 

But then boom, the Conclave, he meets you and joins the Inquisition, begins to be affected by his experiences and you proving him wrong.

 

So I thought him killing Felassan was just unnecessary at first but Cole's comment about "the slow arrow breaks in the sad wolf's jaws". Solas is full of regrets.

 

After he spends time with you, as friend or lover especially, he respects you and he thinks of you as people and sees potential for others, but that all conflicts with his plan so he pushes it down.

 

But as we can see very clearly in a friend and love experience in Trespasser, there's hope there, he talks about looking forward to being proved wrong again, and he knows you'll go after him. He wants to be stopped. His experiences, he says "not at first", meaning yes, you and probably others like Cassandra, Sera, became people to him. So as much as he tries to stuff that down deep inside in order to do what he feels himself resigned to do, he's just not that cold killer of Felassan anymore.
