I'll always murder Celene and put Briala in charge through Gaspard because Celene is terribly abusive and the People need every leg up they can get. Also, from an RP perspective, I need armies and military might. We're at war, Corypheus won't fall to Celene's diplomacy and love of the arts.

But at least Briala is pulling the strings with Gaspard, and he's not good enough at The Game to assassinate/get the better of Briala or the Inquisitor. Celene pulls the strings in her and Briala's relationship, and she hasn't hesitated to yank, strange with, or cut the strings before.
Besides, I get rather sadistic pleasure in giving Gaspard the throne with Briala as overseer. Its like the noble in Sera's quest, "Sure, you can join the Inquisition. We'll also take your lands and titles." Or Corypheus at the end. "You wanted into the Fade?" She sent him into the Fade in shreds. Same with Gaspard. "You wanted the throne? Here is your throne--oh and by the way, Briala calls all the shots, and if you disobey her, we'll expose and ruin you. What? You thought you'd actually be in charge?" Played him at his own game and loved it, and now he has to sign off on laws to help elves instead of hunting them.
I find that more satisfying than giving the keys of the kingdom back to the elf massacrer and hoping she won't turn on them again.
But yes, mine would have made Briala sole empress too, and only settled on Gaspard because at least Briala would have power. But my girl was also disgusted qith the whole thing by the end too.
After Halamshiral, Revas couldn't abide supporting Celene; it was really nice to hear Briala tell my elven protagonist how he's given the Orlesian elves a real future after so many centuries, and how she's given them rights and freedoms, and tearing down Alienage walls; she's also Marquise of the Dales.
Gaspard is kept on a leash, while Briala leads the Orlesian elves towards a better future than they would have ever known.

Chiara - just want to say, I 100% agree with your post about Celene + Briala's realtionship being pretty eff'd up, there are some really unbalanced power dynamics there and Celene has repeatedly lied and led on the lover who placed her trust in Celene, murdering Bria's family and purging that entire alienage, "for the good of Orlais". It's incredibly toxic and nasty. People are right to call it abusive. As cool as it is to have two lesbian Orlesian queens (one of who is an elf, and the first elven noble since the Exalted March on the Dales), I think Briala was completely right to break it off. And knowing that as a player, I feel guilty drawing them together again - even if my character doesn't necessarily have that kind of knowledge.
I wish they'd introduced Briala differently during that quest. Not as 'one of the three' players, as if she's above all the other elves, but I'd liked to have been offered an invitation by her spies to meet in the burned alienage of Halamshiral, or maybe chanced upon the eluvian network in the Winter Palace and met her helping her people out midway through the quest. Tbh that quest could have been 100% improved with more eluvians. I'd like to have had her be the dark horse, the hidden surprise, not just 'Celene's ex-lover' petitioning for elven rights, another politician (just with pointy ears this time).

Yeah, it's 100% the one thing I am really scared of in DA4.

There's a mod that swaps the dalish rouge varient onto the merc coat Lavellan wears at the start of the game. For anyone wanting to start the game looking elfy then this is for you.
There is? Thank you for this information, I will look for it. ![]()

You guys are starting to convince me
Probably won't change my canon playthrough because Celene+Briala fits the more optimistic (or naive, take your pic) view that my Lavellan has of the world in general. Might go for Gaspard in my Adaar playthrough though

... Which is why I think he uses any means necessary to tell them to disappear where humans won't chase them.
Like I said - it's consistent with what he did for South concerning Qunari inflitration or saving the life of hated Inquisitor, despite knowing that they'd meddle with his plans; he did it in order to avoid more bloodshed. He gave Inqusition Skyhold for the same reason - so people wouldn't turn on elves after they find out that Corypheus used orb (which also happened to be his).

Celene is lesbian. Briala's sexuality is unconfirmed, I think. Just a tiny note.

I read TME before I played DAI. My opinion might be a bit controversial, and I hope I can get it across without seeming confrontational. I don't think there really is a right choice when it comes to who controls Orlais.
To be quite honest they're all awful people. Yes even Briala, a bit. I know Celene is a coward and did an unforgivable thing. But how is Gaspard better? He knew she'd purge the Alienage, and that's what he wanted anyways. He doesn't see elves as people. Celene is weak and a fool for being so easily manipulated. Gaspard is also a warmonger who wants to stomp Ferelden and Tevinter into the ground. He doesn't give two sh*ts about world stability. He just wants power and Orlais to be the one that has all of the power. Heck you get a war table mission after he's Emperor where you need to send Josie for peace talks between him and whomever is ruling Ferelden otherwise he is going to take his army to Ferelden. Early on in the book he humiliates Teagan to try and provoke him.
I spent the entire book going holy crap these people are effing terrible.
I chose to reconcile Celene and Briala, even though I think they're terrible for each other. I figured the elves had the best chance with them ruling together. Naive, bleeding-heart me likes to think that Celene learned her lesson. Letting her rule with Briala at her side is a chance to redeem herself. My hope is she stops being such an effing coward going forward, and honestly does right by the elves instead of only as long as it's not inconvenient.
The future of the Inquisition is always going to be questionable. What happens to Briala if the Inquisition is disbanded and Gaspard is the Emperor? I couldn't be sure that Briala would always be the one in control. It's too tenuous for me. I don't trust Gaspard one bit. Not to mention as much as Briala softens Celene, Celene does for Briala as well. Yeah I know, I'm an idiot. Thing is every one of these characters does something terrible, and has just enough "good" moments (depending on your viewpoint) to make it a conflicting choice. Well for me anyways. I really don't see one being more honorable than the other. I just think Gaspard is too dangerous no matter how strong the alliance with the Inquisition might be. Military might wasn't enough for me. Saving the world means nothing if it's just going to end up in another war once Cornflakes is dealt with. The romantic naive softy in me likes the idea of the elves having more, and I personally thought Celene and Briala was the best route for that.
Sorry this is so off topic but there's been multiple posts the last couple pages.
More on topic: Solas was Lavellan's mentor as much as he was her love. She took his input on everything. She still made her own choices, but he did help her arrive there.

Even if it turns out that the elves won't be treated as "Lookie here, the elves are baddies now!" the people that want to see them as worse than dirt will still see them that way. Bioware could make them into fluffy bunnies that just want to bring presents on Christmas Eve with Solas as Santa Clause and the users here on the BSN would STILL want to kill 'em all. Because elves. ![]()
On a different note: I just managed to start my new fanfiction with Solas and Lavellan having more of a hate-hate relationship than I anticipated. Sh*t. ![]()

After my tweet earlier- I wrote another tweet to Patrick that says "I have the best ideas" re: Felassan tweet. He favorited that one.
Yeah well... he seems to be favoriting ideas he thinks are interesting, even if they're not necessarily canon.

Gaspard is the man that wanted to make hunting elves legal, after all.
Shame I couldn't call him out on that. Hey, jerk. Want to say that to my face about how elves are closer to animals than people? Want to say that to my army? And Josie, what do you mean I still can't arrest people for having a stupid face?
Ok, I totally missed that in TME. Where's he ever say that???

I think Patrick confirmed they were both lesbians, although Celene might have married for politics, in a tweet? Not sure where, need to look for it.

He confirmed Celene is, and that she is willing to take on a political marriage. She was planning with Cailan to have him leave Anora and marry her and unite Orlais-Ferelden.

As a player, I liked Briala, Celene, and Gaspard as characters; I thought they were interesting people. But I didn't sympathize with any of them enough to fret about the quality of their lives, except perhaps Briala, and her in-game portrayal kind of turned me off.
As for my Lavellan...I think Halamshiral brought out the worst in her. She was ice-cold during that whole quest, and I definitely had a moment when I realized that my normally gentle-hearted Lavellan enjoyed messing with the Orlesians because she just didn't give a damn about them. She had no concerns about Celene, Briala, or Gaspard's feelings. If someone had asked her about their well-being, she probably would have laughed in their face.

I think there was never a confirmation but I can't find anything. So, either way, tiny thing.

Mine was definitely sympathetic to Briala in all of it. And Celene to some degree, because her knowledge was limited. After recruiting Michel and Celene failing to publicly acknowledge him, that was when her regard for Celene pretty much evaporated. But Briala, still, yes.
