Even before Trespasser I knew Solas/Fen'Harel killed him. No one else made/makes sense narratively.

So, I remember walking around skyhold before playing Trespasser and hearing a strange whooshing noise. I discounted it as a glitch. lol NOPE

 

So, at the Winter Palace during the DLC I heard the swooshing noises again as I walked around, and then I figured out what it was. They were spies (Solas spies most likely since they aren't qunari and have the same body shape) watching the inquisitor. Here's a video where one shows up. Start watching at 24:56.

 

 

 

I'm fairly sure these are Solas spies, considering the same purple magic used by the individual is all over the Fen'Harel Sanctuary. This means he was spying on you before the events of Trespasser, as they show up around Skyhold too, I believe right when you load your game after installing the DlC. They're hard to find however, but I'm fairly sure they have spawning sites. One is in the hall to the "meeting room" or whatever at skyhold.

They're Harlequins.  You get a stat boost for everyone you capture.  After 6 you get a schematic.  I believe it was for a staff

I saw that from gamerMD's video earlier and you may be right but I thought that was from the harlequins?

And I'm sure the same people who condemn him the loudest are also the ones that defend Gaspard, Tevinter and/or the Templar Order the most vehemently. 

 

It's a shame that, despite how much effort the writers and developers put into getting across how kind and caring Solas is (underneath it all), most of the fanbase still dismisses him as "just a villain."

 

It seems that mainly the Solas romancers and pro-elf player who loves him as a buddy give him a chance, or at least acknowledge that he has good points. Patrick Weekes seems to like Solas in interviews, so I'll bet he's thanking his lucky stars that the game got extended and he got to write the romance at all, or else the near universal consensus would be that Solas just sucks and just needs to die now, thankyouverymuch.

 

That said, I wish I hadn't brought up Felassan earlier today. I've had a much harder time forgiving him than ever before.

Well no... we don't know if he wants to restore the elven civilization. He didn't seem to have qualms to destroy it when he thought it was necessary once already - and what he grieves about the most is people's lost conscious connection to the Fade, and not Elvenhan.

 

He says he wants to restore the world of the elves or elves themselves - that doesn't necessarily means he wants to restore the world as it was when the elves had their own empire. Perhaps he wants to push reset button farther than we think he does - to a world prior to everything Evanuris had messed up.

Actually, he tells both romanced, befriended and enemy Inquisitor that the world MAY be destroyed. It's not 100% certain, just like we don't have 100% certainly what exactly he wants to accomplish, by what means and why exactly are other people in danger.

 

Also - I'm not making excuses: what I'm telling is that he doesn't necessarily wants to restore Elvenhan and predominantly focuses on un-Tranquilizing the world.

To be fair, every civilization is cruel to its own people. There's no society in Thedas that doesn't involve oppression or corruption or abuse of some sort. (Dwarven nobles backstab each other in politics and legally forbid the casteless to live, Tevinter Magisters have abused blood magic, demon-summoning and elven slaves since their inception, Orlais backstab each other and abuse its peasants and elves--heck, Andrastian society in general oppresses mages and elves.) The 1% suck no matter where you go.
 
It sounds like the main problem though was the tyrannical "false gods" that ruled at the top while the rest of the people at the bottom had a lot of good and beauty and wonder to offer, and Solas likely believed that once he got rid of the elven pantheon and freed his people, Elvhenan would retain all the good (of which it sounds like there was plenty) without the tyrannical. As he learned the hard way, the same methods he used to seal the evil gods also destroyed all the good of Elvhenan too, and now he likely hopes to restore the good of Elvhenan and then destroy/banish the evil of it once and for all.
 
To that end, I can somewhat understand where he's coming from--although I am horrified and disgusted with his plan and methods.
 
As far as the elves themselves are concerned, even when you remove the "Tranquil" comparison, I can kind of understand him not wanting to rely on this world. Thedas human history is just rife with other races kicking the elves while they're down, forcing them back down when they try to stand up, and then just kicking them again. Between that and the magic and birthrates of elves dwindling while the numbers and power of humans (and now Qunari) rises, if I were him, I wouldn't want to hold my breath that the other races would ever allow elves their fair share in this world either.

How is he planning to kill these "false goods" now when he's probably not fully powered? Unless you count him "absorbing" Mythal as giving him a power up. If he coudn't kill them before what has changed now? Sure he seems to have a plan but somehow Solas and plans don't go well together.
 
Also how do you think Lavellan feels when he says he plans to destroy everything to bring back a forgotten civilization/Elvhen? She's part of Thedas too so he's planning to kill her along with everyone? I can sit here all day and try to reason why he choses to do this. It's hard not to and Solas is nothing but lovable which makes him the most conflicting character in the history of Bioware. What kind of assurances does he have that when he brings down the Veil and wakes the Elvhenan, the world will be a better place?
 
The struggle for power. The strong submitting and abusing the weak. If it happened in the past it will happen again. You said "every civilization is cruel to its own people. There's no society in Thedas that doesn't involve oppression or corruption or abuse of some sort." What makes him think that what happened to the Elves won't happen again? There is no Utopia. That's what makes it so frustrating for me. I adore Solas even more because his character is able to bring about this type of discussions but his quick fix isn't going to do anything but delay the cycle. Large civilizations are meant to fall as we well know. He needs a more progressive approach. Returning things to the way they were isn't necessarily going to help modern Thedas.

Well sure. [spoiler]Let's hope he meant that in an abstract non-literal way. Let's say half of the population is destroyed. Is it still worth it?
What does "un-Tranquilizing" the world mean? Everyone becomes a mage? Sure I'm down for that. Maybe no one dies but there will definitely be a change in power and he's naive to think someone isn't going to jump to the opportunity (Elvhen or any other race) to stay on top. So eventually wouldn't the world get messed up again? Who presses the reset switch again?
 
I unfortunately only have questions for him. No wonder he left my Lavellan behind. He knew she was going to ask him too much already.

You're... really asking the wrong person.  I would never be in Solas' position because I'm not that kind of person, I don't have that kind of moral compass, and I would not do the things he's doing. I can barely tolerate it in other people. 

 

While my Inquisitor was also the leader of a large organization (because the game said so), she wasn't a cold, ruthless, calculating dictator who used and discarded people for her own purpose, who pushed her views on others, who expected complete obedience from people working under her and then immediately killed them for stepping out of line or disagreeing with her philosophies. (Celene's death was the only ruthless action, but then she wasn't a friend or ally to the Inquisition and she had directly caused the death of thousands of elves to secure her own power before that, so... even though, I imagine my girl was so horrified and disgusted with herself that she vomited all night and was ill for a weak--sweating and shivering and barely able to stand being in her own skin--and never did anything close to that bad again.)

 

"He had to kill his friend because he saw them as people." I don't care who you are, that's cold. (He really couldn't have imprisoned him or tried to reason with him or something? Death was the only solution and it had to be right that second? I didn't tolerate that from Leliana, and I won't tolerate it from Solas if I could talk him out of it.)

 

In a way, your excuses for his actions are just making it worse because now I'm finding him more detestable by the sentence, and hating Solas is the absolute last thing I want to do.

It's not easy to put oneself in his shoes, I for one, can't imagine myself doing like that as well, I couldn't execute anyone in game, I lead cockroaches out of my house with a napkin.

 

He could've imprisoned him, but for how long? And where? He has no facilities.

He could've reasoned with him, but that sort of betrayal probably showed Solas he can't change his mind (he obviously can't, it's like someone will try to tell a newly passionate activist who just freed a farm cow that they shouldn't be given that sort of treatment).

You feel ill at ease because Solas considered Felassan as a friend? Or because you like the character? What if instead of Felassan it was a character that acted like Gaspard?

 

The Inquisition also led to death of hundred of people, even if you had no say, perhaps you killed on your stroll in Emerald Grave people with families who just want to get by, not all of them are inherently evil afterwards, spirit!Cole says it's hard for him because they can change, you even get to make decisions like The Loss of a Friend - kill Grandin, or let him go. I pitied him, truly, but didn't let him go, because that would've endangered a lot of people.

People let Imshael go, it may have severe repercussions in the future, who knows? That guy is responsible for deaths of many, but he is a fun character.

There's the entire Sit in Judgement quest as well. You are usually given the choice to kill someone, redeem them or punish them in another manner. For example Gregory Dedrick, first playthrough I judged him only half attentively (I don't remember what I did but I do recall being pissed at him because I didn't bother reading the codices thoroughly), last playthrough I sort of regretted capturing him at all and I ended up exiling him (which is something Solas approves of, perhaps he sees himself in him). There is also the example of Crassius Servis, did you notice that if you judge him instead of kill (while at Western Approach) him you will get disapproval from Cole no matter what decision you make? Does that make Cole a bad person? Or does that make others who approve of judging him bad people? There is also Mistress Poulin who although done horrible things, did them for what she thought was the better good. I helped her restore the town but I'm certain many people who thought her acts were horrendous killed her off.

 

Solas usually doesn't approves of execution, Cole approves more of execution than Solas. Cole killed many mages in the White Spire. You could say he was confused, but if you say that to his face he will disapprove of you (because it's not true).

All the other characters are the same, they will approve or disapprove of your actions on whether to kill someone based on their worldview. 

 

You say you headcanon your Inquisitor feeling sick after letting Florianne kill Celene, imagine Solas when he just started the rebellion, maybe he felt the same, he had to grow a thicker skin and steel his heart after a while, he could've been Fen'Harel for hundred of years before the fall of the Elven Empire for all we know.

You are not Solas, your character is not Solas, he had to do make a lot of hard decisions, it doesn't make him less of a good person in my eyes.

 

I'm not sure why I feel the need to defend him so badly since I really don't like the fact he killed Best Elf, it made me feel ill at ease at first too, especially after defending him that there is no way he could've done that (pre-Trespasser).

 

If it makes you feel any better, the Solas that Felassan knew is probably different from what we know, since he can change if you go through his friendship route.

Maybe all I wrote above is nonsense and Solas was just cold post-awakening out of shock and done goof, I don't know, I didn't write Solas.

 

Sorry if I made you like Solas less :/

I know Weekes already mentioned on a previous tweet that we may get closure for Solavellan but just thought I'd share this as well.

I have a fondness for the gender-neutral, red diplomatic outfits.

 

My Lavellan isn't overly girly or anything, so the dresses wouldn't suit her. But if I do begin modding, I'd use some dresses and definitely use hair mods on some other characters. Hair mods are the best thing invented for BioWare games.

 

There is a lovely Dalish themed retexture of the outfits on the nexus.  I'd also recommend using the invisible formal attire mod+the Skyhold armour mod with one of the Dalish varients to give your quizzy an unique look at the ball.

 

@sable - the base game still has a bunch of broken stuff (does anyone know the best place to report bugs because I'm making a list) and Trespasser has major import bugs and crashing issues.  We're likely to still have patch support for a while.
