[Miss This or That]

And everything hurts.  But the good sort of hurt

 

I used to prefer more escapism in my RPGs; I installed so many romance mods for BG2, and 99% of them had happily ever afters into the sunset with sexy menfolk  But now I just want the story to be good, no matter how long I wind up spending in the hellspiral.  

 

The Solas romance is like being stranded in the middle of the ocean with just a little raft for your safety. And then Weekes comes along on a gigantic cruiser, hands you a paddle and sails away.

I'd literally have to delete bits if I decided not mention his eye color at all, so it would be missing now. Haha. But I see your point. Sadly, I don't think I can write it that way, especially not with Fenris. His eyes are super intense, regardless of color. Right now I'm staring at the passage where I mention his eyes for the first time. I have them written as green currently, but it triggers a weird disconnect for me. No bueno.
 

The workaround being that when we play DA2, we are playing a story that Varric is telling - like the part where he faces Bartrand solo and is a total badass until Cass tells him to stop it. Perhaps one of the reasons most of the elves have green eyes in the game is because Varric just glossed over it, doesn't especially care, or just made an extravagant lie in Fenris' case. So when Tiger meets him, she'd be kinda expecting the green, but be pleasantly surprised by the blue if I decided to go that route.

When I had that idea, I went to change it and am now hovering over this part, wondering if I actually should. Blat. Indecision.

 

Yeah then probably what I would do is just run with the change on your end and just not mention any oddities, like don't address that it's different from the game. That's really one of those things where you can just say conversationally, yeah, I use a mod, I'm so used to it being this way. It'll probably only call attention to the difference if you go out of your way to explain it, but if you just leave it as-is and run with it, people are liable to either not notice or let it slide. I've seriously had to do this with majour misremembering of game continuity and it worked out, so a simple thing like eye colour should be no issue.

Would anybody be interested in reading Lavellan fluff/smut that does NOT involve Solas?  I know rebounds come up from time to time in fanfiction, and I figured my Lavellan wasn't a nun for two years   Especially not with all those cute Avvar running around.

 

I wrote it mostly for fun, but if there's any interest, I'll clean it up and post it...somewhere?

I misread hellspiral as hospital and well, that was...different.

 

Blanket fort hospital is definitely more like it though.

 

 

 Garrus is my go-to romance for playing an actual, healthy, normal relationship.  They feel like an old married couple, stable and down-to-earth, each others' best friend and greatest supporter.

Solas is my romance for a tragic and lovely fairy-tale.  It ticks off all the boxes for the things that I would never EVER put up with IRL, but make for great fiction.  My BFF was commenting on the relationship status for Solas and Lavellan at the end; she was all like, "Wait, so taking your hand, trying to end the world, and dream-stalking you counts as still being together?  WTF."

 

With me, that was Liara, but Garrus was pretty much the best friend who could relate and both of them made each other better people. I should do something before I slide back into those feelings again too.

And yet, after all of that happened, there's such a sense of hope. That counts as a hopeful and 'together' ending!

 

I think we're okay, right? Right?

 

Solas, you stuck in the past, cold, sad onion of feels....we still love you somehow.

I like how the whole 'Solas is a racist' argument has taken on a whole new gigantic scale since Trespasser. That old nutshell ain't going away.

I find calling him a racist is just a bit lazy.

The guy only woke up a year before the breach. Imagine you just woke up in the Earth of today and had to catch up with humanity? The news does not paint a shining picture of us. I can imagine that same scenario for Solas.

He spent his time fighting to free people from oppression and false Gods, then wakes up to a world where people live under the Qun and have no freedom, or they are Dalish trying to reclaim their false Gods as real, or city Elves living in poverty under the boot of Humans who spread war across Thedas against magic that was once just a normal part of society. Then of course, Dwarves who were a once great race now mimicking the Elves' lost empire as a reminder of how it all went wrong. 

The whole feeling like they were Tranquil thing sounds horrible from the perspective of the PC. Being accused of being that creepy, emotionless shell. But when I try to imagine it from his viewpoint it's even worse. To wake up in a world that you are emotionally disconnected from. Not good.

 

He made a promise to help his people, just as your Quizzy promised to close the breach. When you get thrown in the future during In Hushed Whispers, your only goal is to get back in time so you can undo the mistakes and save everyone from that horrible demon infested world. Welcome to Solas's world. Thrown into a future that is not what you set out to make when you tried to stop the worst from happening. But there is hope you can fulfil your promise and save those you want to protect. If Solas was the player character I wonder how many wouldn't blink an eye at hitting that reset button? Like the people that chose the green ending in ME3?

 

I realise that the balcony scene and him going round wanting to take down all life on Thedas so he can bring back 'his people' hardly makes him seem like the most open-minded of people   But to me it isn't a race thing. Now I know about the Veil, that balcony scene seems less 'how did your race make someone decent?' and more 'how is it that something good has prospered in a world so disconnected from what it should be?' It's like trying to reach out to a small glimmer of hope in a world he thought he'd really ****ed up.  And 'his people' are his family. Not many people wouldn't go the extra mile for theirs :/

Ah but also, I just feel like 'racist' is jut the wrong label to throw at Solas. He is a 'God' of rebellion waking up in a world that has become so freaking subservient. Whether it be to the Chantry, Qun, Magisters or his old bro's in the pantheon. I don't see him as hating all the races, but more the principles on which many have formed their lives around. Principles he knows are wrong in many cases. So I do get a bit of a furrowed brow whenever I see posts from people hating on him for being a racist. By all means, dislike the guy but make it for a better reason that 'racist.' Try for the fact that because of him Cory is kinda the FREAKING HERO of DAI now   Damn it, Chuckles.

She doesn't have to wait two years doing nothing. I mean, she doesn't even know if she's EVER going to see him again during those two years.

Does anyone know what happens if you take the Inquisition guard into custody when given the choice between her and the Orlesian servant?

Given what we know about her now, it's tempting to see if we get any more allusions that she's a spy for Solas before we find it out from him. It probably doesn't change anything, but that servant carrying a "wine barrel" shaped oddly like the gaatlok barrels in the deep roads is too much not to arrest them.

I wouldn't mind naming a future dog Chuckles, but Solas...Imagine the funny looks geeks might give you as you cried out for Solas at the dog park...

 

As for child names, please think it through before you name your child after a character in contemporary media. I really don't mean to be judgmental. Name your child what you will, and I wish you all the luck in the world. It's just that your child's naming shouldn't be another opportunity to express your love for a fandom in my opinion. It's his or her NAME. She or he will have to live with it and its origin long after you are gone. Imagine a 80 year old woman telling her grandkids, "Yes, Patrick, my parents named me Morrigan after a scantily clad witch in a classic Bioware video game." I knew someone who named their kid after a character in The Matrix because they were totally into that movie at the time. Now everyone laughs about it. Just think it over. I mean no disrespect to anyone. Also, I might just be a little too old-fashioned so yeah.

There's no real difference; in fact, I barely noticed any comments on the arrest at all.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is not nearly enough dom!Lavellan in this fandom

He dumps her, it sucks, and staying hung up on it is fine if you want to run with it that way, but I personally find it really weird to make no attempt to move on with your life, especially over a period of two years.

 

That doesn't have to mean finding a new beau, of course, but man, I had a ten-year-long relationship end on a combination of 'it's not you, it's me', 'i like you as a friend', and 'i like this other girl as not a friend', and I was, you know, more or less fine within a month. Not happy about how the relationship ended! And I'm still not sure how I'd react if he said he wanted to try again! but a breakup is only the end of the world for a fairly short period of time.

My Lavellan is this way too. She just keeps herself busy with work for the past two years.

Exactly. Anything should be possible, especially because Weekes made sure to give us plenty of roleplaying opportunities. My Lavellan wouldn't be hung up for two years, either. She'd be sad and mostly angry that he mistrusted her and seemingly 'used' her, but it's nothing that would cause her pain for two years. It would take some time, yes, but in the end she has more important things to worry about, anyway. Be that other men or work, or simply freetime after closing the Breach. It's not like her entire life comes to a halt because that hobo mage who was with her for maybe a year ditched her without an explanation and then seemingly poofed out of existence.
