FITE! FITE! FITE!

(mostly for the shade Varric would throw.  The glorious shade)

Really?  I could never see Vivienne as a parent, but I think Dorian would be a decent father once he realized that his relationship with his children does NOT have to be a reaction to his parents' relationship with him.

Well being a parent naturally makes you grow, so Dorian could surprise me, but as he is now I don't think he'd make a very good parent.

Vivienne has the ice queen shell, but so did Morrigan and Morrigan's an obviously loving mother. Plus if you play as a pro Circle Trevelyan mage Vivienne becomes almost motherly, at least that's how I saw it. She has this natural intent to want to make you be the best you can be, and unlike Dorian Vivienne is very mentor-like already.

This is actually an excellent plot idea, with Gaspard, you know.  Lavellan agrees to marry Gaspard for political reasons.  Then she conspires to kill him, thereby becoming Empress of Orlais upon his death.  But Gaspard is wily so it wouldn't be easy...

Andraste did have children.  It's just that at first because of her apparently frail/weak form, she wasn't believed capable of bearing them and surviving.  Don't remember how many of them were actually hers.

I think this idea's been done before with Dorian/Lady Inquisitor.  Considering political marriages for appearances are one thing he stands against, though, it just kind of doesn't fit him?  You'd need a super good reason for him to do that, rather than refuse on the grounds that he's not into women and he's not going to pretend to be someone or something he isn't for the sake of politics.

Well, if Clan Lavellan wants an heir, they're going to probably want that heir to be elven.  I can't think of any other high ranking elves, unless it's maybe someone from the College of Enchanters (pretty sure you don't want the Circle of Magi involved, especially if you are a mage).

On the other hand...

Dear Abelas,

I hope this missive finds you well.

It seems I have recently come into possession of landholdings and a noble title in the city of Kirkwall.  Seeing as you are a leader among your people, and I am a leader among mine, it stands to reason that there would be much to gain politically and socially from a contractual agreement.  Would it be too crass of me to raise the topic of a potential marriage between us, uniting my people with yours?

Your standing and mine are more or less equal at this juncture.  Since the Inquisition has disbanded, my forces have become much smaller.  Yours were never particularly massive.  Should we unite in marriage, we would both gain in martial strength as well as political.  Elves would stand to benefit--alas, perhaps not in the way that you would prefer, but a place would be made for your people without the usual scorn and dismissal that my people suffer, while my people could finally begin to live away from the shadow of that scorn.

This is a chance for both of us, and I do hope you will consider it with sincerity.

Mythal enansal,

Former Inquisitor Lavellan

(Abelas would probably burn that letter...)

Also, regarding a political marriage with Varric:

It's possible Varric might agree to it if he were feeling similar pressure to produce an heir.  But, if Lavellan is the Keeper's First, you'd probably be expected to have little elven babies--which you won't get with a dwarf, although if the theories and hints about Sandal and his origin are true, you might end up with a dwarven mage.  I'm pretty sure dwarf/anything hybrids are pretty rare in Thedas.  Not very fertile if not with other dwarves, maybe?  Whereas according to the Orlesians at least, elves breed very quickly within their own species.

Much as Varric will always prefer and love Bianca, though, and since he says he's only into dwarves, I just can't see him even trying to produce an heir unless it's a Cadash he's trying with.  I guess he could claim he tried and it just didn't happen.  He does enjoy spinning tales.  It's pretty sad he's always going to be hung up on Bianca when he can't really truly be with her... but I suppose the same may end up being said of Lavellan in the end, too.

I like the idea with Gaspard myself, but it means that Lavellan would have helped him to get this position in the first place - and I just can't see this particular Lavellan doing so. She has the idea in her head that she's just the means to an end to help the elves with their culture, so she would rather cut off her own ears than to let Gaspard get the throne.

Oh, she did? I only knew of the fact that she was supposed to be too frail and weak to have any.

That message to Abelas is perfect, pahaha!

Well, this particular Lavellan is only a warrior, so she wouldn't be pressured as much as a First to the Keeper. And she kept the Inquisition because she believes she needs raw power in any form to change something for the elves, which is the reason why she agrees to marry for political reasons in the first place. But I agree, the problem with Varric still stands. He could, potentially, have a mistress, though...mhm. The whole heir thing would definitely be easier with Sebastian.

I discovered this a few days ago, well written, I like it, the beginning part is very smutty. And I say this as a lover of smut.

Yeah, astolat is a pro-writer, and very prolific in fandom. I like her work - she did a really good solavellan smutfic, too.

Really, it is? Huh! Well then, Solas with baked goodies must be popular. Must be because of dem buns, pfft.

Most people seem to like the Varric idea, haha. It would definitely be fun to write!

Bianca lead Cory's people to red lyrium though. Her hands are not 100% clean.

This is why a political marriage between Varric and Lavellan could work. They have things they could talk about, and both know what it's like. Mostly.

Heir thing aside anyway. My Lavellan produced her kids long before she even became Inquisitor, and if Varric wants to adopt a couple or dwarf babies as his heirs Lavellan's got no problem wiping more noses.

And somewhere in the Fade, the Dread Wolf looks on in complete bemusement and totally forgets what he had been intending to do.

My little pile of fanfic treasures grows. When am I going to sleep from all the reading?

It's actually really exciting! After the DLC it feels like fanfic season opened. Everyone has years to headcanon whatever.

I think the one really big bonus point that Varric has is that Lavellan can trust him - and we know how important trust is for the Inquisitor to be able to outsmart Solas. They have things to talk about, could plan elaborate stories together why they have no heir yet and both would profit from the trust and influence of the other. I just...really like the Varric idea, okay? :D

If I can think of one person I'd be happily married to without actually being in love with them, it would be Varric. Wicked grace, drinking, writing, and humorous snark all day every day.

I feel like after Solas, my definition of "clean" has become decidedly skewed.  Even some of the crap that the old LIs pull feels like small potatoes.

What if in order to help the elves, Lavellan put Briala in charge with Gaspard on the throne as a figurehead?  However, Gaspard outwitted Briala, and now she's dead.  That would explain why the Inquisitor decides on a political marriage solely to get close enough to Gaspard to kill him--and to help the elves of Orlais.

It's something to do with however much time remains until More Stuff Happens, anyway.

*Solas voice on* It seems I am pressuring myself. *Solas voice off*

Yeah, I think I have decided. Varric it is. Happy fun times, sad drunken times, Wicked Grace and hilarious stories about not being able to produce an heir and a lot of heartache lying underneath.

I'm telling no one no, either.  But I do want to see a fic where Lavellan marries Gaspard in an effort to become sole Empress of Orlais and help the elves.

I don't think I'm the one to write that fic.  I stink at politics.  I guess I could try it at some point?  But my "letter to Abelas" now makes me want to write a fic where the Inquisitor actually sends such a letter to Abelas and doesn't really expect him to take her up on that offer...

The thighs dictate!

Side pairings are good for our Lavellans!  Varric, Abelas, random Avvar man...

(unfortunately Gaspard's earlobes still make me cry)

That Abelas fic would be really cool! I'd read it. =) The Gaspard one sounds awesome, but it just isn't really what I'm looking for in this particular story. Too much risk for this particular Lavellan. If I would make a hyper little crazy woman one day, then yes, wonderful idea. But this Lavellan would rather toast to her own sadness and play a round of Wicked Grace.

Well in my fic you'd only be marrying Gaspard to murder him so... maybe you could just have a deep-seated vendetta against his earlobes, I dunno.

I know I'm horrible.  But Gaspard is horrible.  He deserves no better.

I can see Dorian as the awkward uncle that gives his niece a very expensive gift and then just stands there, not knowing what to do with a child.

I think Uncle Dorian would be cute. XD I think he'd love the chance to have a child idolize him.
