After a whole game of Solas calling modern elves "children" for not remembering the past but refusing to elaborate, and Abelas calling the Dalish "shadows wearing vallaslin" but refusing to reveal what they're shadows of, by the time Flemeth rolled around I thought, "Stop treating me like a child, I'm capable of having grownup conversations. In fact, stop keeping us all in the dark and then blaming us for stumbling around in it. You have a light, why don't you share it?"

 

Yeah, that. Which is why I was so damn glad that when we got to Trespasser, we could stand there and have a conversation where

Solas gave us the answers and told us (as far as we know) the actual truth of the matter instead of the typical cryptic bulls***. As much as I didn't just want an infodump before he jumped through the mirror, it was nice to finally have someone speak to my character like they could understand concepts more difficult than how to tie their shoes.

 

I'd love it if we could just once yell at the godly know-it-all characters to pull their heads out of their self-absorbed a*ses and have an adult conversation, considering everything that generally occurs and the things a character learns by the time they get around to talking to said godly character.

We don't know 100% that it was Solas, but all of Cole's dialogue and Solas's mention of the eluvians point toward it being him.

 

And yes, Felassan became an obstacle.  He was compromised.  Not only did he fail to give the eluvians to Solas, he actively helped Briala take them for the modern elves.  Because he loved Briala (platonically).  Because he no longer believed in Solas's plan.

 

And I like that we saw this side to Solas before we even met him in-game.  The Solas who told Lavellan "What we had was real" is a changed man from the Solas who so coldly killed Felassan.

I think it might be something to do with how June is the least-mentioned of all the Pantheon in any stories we've heard about them, aside from that he apparently likes to make stuff. June seems to come across like Hephaestus in Greek Mythology, a dork who instead of causing mayhem among mortals, preferred to stay out out everyone's way because it's far more fun to make awesome toys to play with.

 

For all we know, he could have been more like Doctor Doom and the maker of mass superweapons... and is it wrong that that excites me even more?

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks Solas made relative sense here, harsh as it was (not saying it's good, of course). It wasn't just "he saw them as people, how dare he! Gonna kill him muahahaha". Felassan was showing all the signs of a traitor, and actively impeding the resurrection of their world and their people. All for some tranquil people with miserable existences in a ruined world (This is Solas view, naturally, not reality).

 

Felassan was one of his most understandable actions, honestly. Him continuing his plan even when he now knows the Inquisitor is "real"  (and can be in love with her) and thus, no matter how he might try to deny it, everyone is real, is the more monstrous act. I'm not sure what's with all the hang up on Felassan, other than that people like him.

I feel like if Felassan had been in any other DA book, I would have liked him, but I wouldn't have gotten as attached.  As it was, he was one of the very few characters with whom I could sympathize in Masked Empire, so the loss of the character hurt that much more.

Yeah, that's pretty much the reason I like him.

 

And his name is kinda hot. I mean really, just say June next to the other names. Short, two syllable sweetness that just sounds nice.

 

But yeah...he probably did make terrible things. And I bet he looked amazing while he made them.

I think Trespasser kind of leans a little more towards June being an elf, no? I mean, from the codex entries we did get...it seems like the ancient elves went to war with the Titans....thus making them go to war with dwarves. So, I guess if June was a traitor to his people he could have been a dwarf.

 

And another note is the one codex entry that I'm aware of that mentions June calls him Clever June. In the same entry Sylaise is called Blessed Sylaise and this is a real shot in the dark buuuuuuuut.....

 

If you go with the new theory out there that ancient elves were spirits who took physical form,then this means all of the Evanuris must have been some spirit aspect and this codex entry is saying what spirit aspect thingy they were.

 

That would put June as something like a Spirit of Cleverness/Intellect/Learning/Way to Smart for his own good.

 

Just a shot in the dark though.

Well I get that, I liked him too! But there are much more unforgivable things Solas plans to do, in my view.

 

I'd love to hear more about their relationship, though. Even in that final moment, there was so much complexity in how Felassan viewed Solas. I wonder if that'll ever be expanded upon. Perhaps if certain theories are really true and Felassan yet lives!

How big is the book? I've never read a game spinoff novel before because I have this nagging feeling game writers writing abilities won't transfer well to full length novels, but I guess I won't know if I don't try.

 

Well, Patrick Weekes is a novelist on his own too. He was the first person other than David Gaider to write a DA novel....and now we know why. My digital copy puts it at 381, but that's total including misc pages, so more or less around there.

This is why I went from my initial 'whyyy?" and 'that was unnecessary' to thinking about Felassan's death as a great example of cold, pre-Inquisition Solas as a juxtaposition along who he is afterward, especially if romanced. As much as he tries to stuff that deep down inside, he's changed, and he's in pain. As opposed to the cold decision to get rid of an agent who had become a weakness in his plan because he became sympathetic.

I'm not sure how much of it was Solas himself changing, than it was his perspective changing. Understanding his perspective seems to be crucial to understanding why Solas does what he does. The line between harsh but ultimately necessary and "hurting real, truly alive people for reasons that might actually be crap, now that I've been around and learned some more" is blurring for him hardcore. I think that's the main thing about him that changed since the Felassan incident. I think that ruthlessness will always comes out when he believes it to be truly needed and necessary and that it hasn't really gone away. But hey, all of our PCs carve through people like a turkey dinner. Some degree of ruthlessness is always around with everyone in the DA world.

It's really good storytelling but it's terribly sad. Felassan was so likeable and I'd like to believe by the time Solas fell in love with Lavellan, he understood more about where Felassan came from when he chose Briala over the "master plan". It shows Solas is a strong character that developed over time. I just think the whole thing is terribly sad.

 

Solas carries so much damn baggage. Like no wonder he fell for Lavellan so quickly and so hard. The fact people in Thedas are "real" is something that is splitting Solas apart but yet he won't give up on his plan. Thank you for explaining further.

Yeah. I understand the narrative purpose, since revealing everything to the player kills suspense, but it's still infuriating from a roleplay perspective.

 

I do like that a few dialogue options when you first catch up to Solas is to yell at him for not trusting you or calling him out on keeping you in the dark, even though I myself didn't click on it for my "canon" run.

I managed to pretty much choose the feelsiest options, I think. But I like how even the sad option leads you to tell him "But you lied to me. I loved you. Did you really think I wouldn't have understood?"

The angry version is too angry for her. I don't even like the accusatory-ish nature of the way the "You're the Dread Wolf" option sounds in the actual line. For her, I chose the "I came to find you" because qunari were trying to go attempt to kill him and she wanted to get there. That's more her.

No, that's what I was saying. I think the perspective change was surface initially but but I do think things affected him to such a degree that he did change somewhat, even as he feels resigned to his plans. The way he sends signals that seem to indicate he wants to be stopped, that he knows you'll come after him, I don't see that as the same Solas as dispatched Felassan so coldly.
