I think Merrill absolutely would.

 

She's just the right kind of naive and stubborn. A non-romanced Merrill, anyway. I have no idea what a romanced Merrill was like. The non-romanced one irritated me to no end.

Well I really just added the romanced part to add it. I feel like my Hawke's friendship with Merrill, Varric's, and Isabela's are all strong enough to keep her from being so Elves VS The World. They love each other and [insert gooey mooshiness] I think that love will keep her from siding with Solas and will actively make her oppose him. I also think it would be very regressive of Merrill to naively or stubbornly follow Solas. She grew so much in the course of DA2 from her experiences. Her keeper and possibly her clan died for her obsession with the past. She learns what it is to actually live among the elves, she learns the dangers of magic, and she learns that people can be both accepting and not of her because of who she is and her choices.

yeah. they are cleaning up A LOT of loose ends.  beheaded lealiana is a lyirum ghost(that is now my canon because bizarre).  they are answering more questions than asking and point people in a very specific direction.  I CAN FEEL IT. THE END IS COMING!

I don't want Solas to give up and be redeemed just because his lover might ask him to. I want him to come to whatever realization he needs to for himself, based on whatever he's experienced through the course of DAI. Even with an assquisitor, Solas still developed friendships with Cassandra and Varric, and still got to know others on top of that. He can't look at the world and not see what he will destroy. Really, he probably already does, and that's where some of his pain comes from regardless of love and friendship. He needs to make the choice for himself because he wants to, and not just because he happens to love someone. This is why Thom's redemption worked for me in the end, and I hope for no less with Solas.

I don't think he'd be redeemed just because friend/romance quizzy asks it of him.  As Hawke points out, you can only help people who want to be helped, and deep down he does want to be proven wrong.  But I do think it's very telling that you can't even try to redeem him with a low approval Inquisitor.  Regardless of quizzy, he does come to know modern Thedas.  He does make friends.  But I think he needs quizzy to give him that final push.

 

Honestly, I think him saving low-approval quizzy's life is a result of the last vestiges of guilt he feels for inflicting the Anchor on them.  He might hate them, but he knows the suffering brought by the Anchor is not quizzy's fault.  So he saves this person he despises one last time, then washes his hands of the whole thing.

I think if the Evanuris are released, then I do think Solas will need to be around to resolve it, just because that arc belongs to him. So if, as a few of us are conjecturing, there will be a DA5 with Evanuris, then I think Solas should be there to deal with them (along with Mythal, presumably). And if he survives, I do hope Lavellan will too, perhaps that is when she can help him.

Your Lavellan sounds really close to mine, and she would also have trouble accepting Solas killing someone close to him in such cold blood, while at the same time her heart would bleed for him as she realizes from Cole saying so how every time Solas does somehting like this, a little bit of him dies. He loses a little bit of his humanity. She's afraid that, at some point nothing will be left but his all-encompassing guilt and his obsession about destroying the world of today to bring back the one of the past (a fool's errand in her mind, even though the past fascinates her)

It feels weird to say this since FRIENDSHIP! is such a huge theme in BioWare's games, but I kinda wish my Lavellan's softie tendencies had bitten her in the ass a bit more during DA:I.

She's going to be in serious trouble facing Solas.  He's emotionally compromised, but so is she, and unlike him, she can't compartmentalize her emotions.  She just can't steel herself to do certain things.  I was hoping that tendency would get knocked out of her over the course of DA:I, but I'm hard-pressed to think of an instance where the game punishes you for choosing to show mercy.  Though I suppose in my headcanon, the fact that she turned the Inquisition into a refuge for elves led to Solas and the qunari being able to infiltrate that much more easily before Trespasser.

I'm not entirely sure why, but since we, on Solas thread in general, tend to be able to understand Solas motivations (no matter that we think it's a baddddd idea), it's kind of hard for me to see people get really angry at him for what he did for Felassan.

the "why" I guess. Felassan was just a really cool character who was able to "get it" before Solas did and it just a shame that things happened the way they did. Solas is a very complex character and at the end of the day some of his actions are unforgivable.

One of the ideas that are bouncing around in my head, is that, yes, the veil will come down regardless. However, the matter of it coming down may depend on the choices the players make. 'Solas f*ck up' version (named so very loosely) is for players who didn't really care about his character and haven't managed to stop him. 'Veil comes down in the least destructive way possible' is the version where the player manages to 'redeem' him. Obviously, I am not a dev, but these are the broad assumptions that lurk in my head post DAI.

 

p.s. Actually, I also really hope he has done f*cking up and will come to his senses.

Awww, I like Merrill. I understand her drive to save the past, even if her understanding of it is incomplete. She can be stubborn and naive all at once, but I find it usually more endearing than annoying.

But I agree about Felassan's death being necessary to understand Solas, both pre and post Inquisition. As a player, it also helps me come to grips with my Lavellan's greatest weakness and strength--her capacity for empathy.

She feels for people. It's what drives her to look out for them. It makes her a wonderful friend and a fair leader despite her reluctance for the spotlight. But with Solas, it puts her in a "good cannot comprehend evil" situation. She's not the kind of person who could ever kill a friend that coldly, so I don't think she really comprehends how Solas could.

Your Lavellan and mine would get along fabulously.

As much as I love Solas, it's very difficult to come to terms with some of these things we have learned about him. Unfortunately I think it increases my obsessiveness about him even more but at the end of the day my Lavellan could never sacrifice someone unless there wasn't a choice. Like Strout/Hawke/Alistair in the Fade. I don't know maybe to him there really wasn't a choice but I disagree.

 

I will enjoy the day when Lavellan can get through Solas. He will realize that the means don't always justify the end and he has already sacrificed too much. It's time for other methods that don't require sacrificing your friends for the greater good. I know he's planning not to survive whatever he's planning but there might be some hope for him left. The Inquisitor is crucial for that.

People say I have trouble feeling empathy. I agree, but only for people who expect me to feel sorry for a problem they, themselves created. She put herself into the situation and thought herself above it. She wasn't. Not my problem.

 

I could feel the same way about Solas, and I do, to a degree. But he's not some "I'm more clever than you" child. He accepts the responsibility and acknowledges he made terrible mistakes. Even if Merrill says it, it never rings authentic. Ugh she just makes me mad. And I'm super grouchy today.

With my favourite HoF being my Dalish Elf, I constantly wanted to throttle Merrill for her work on the Eluvian. 

Yay, lets take a shard from the mirrior that essentially killed two of your clan and mess around with it. That'll fix everything. Tsk.

 

I don't totally dislike her character though, and enjoyed having her around with Isabela. But I agree wholeheartedly about the childishness. I find her whole romance option really uncomfortable because I find her to be such a child. Creeps me out so much.

 

It also doesn't help that as a forced Human Protag you aren't supposed to have the elven knowledge to call her out on her BS. You just have to deal with it. As much fun as Sarcastic Hawke is, I missed my Elven Hero so freaking bad in DA2 thanks to characters like Merrill and Anders. Two people she desperately owes a slap in the face to.
