Obsessions are not easily repressed. The news of ancient elves being alive alone would only spark her obsession back up. Granted, I always saw Merrill as a child, playing with forces she couldn't possibly understand. Silly and naive, laced with a dangerous sort of stubborn ego. Mixed all up with Blood Magic. Not my favorite character.
I understand where you're coming from, I couldn't stand Merrill during my first playthrough. She was powerful and so naive it bordered on moronic, two traits that don't mix. But as I played my second playthrough as all around nice and empathetic person I began to understand Merrill more and cherish the innocence she brought to our ragtag group of rogues. I agree that she is silly, she is naive, and she does have a dangerous sort of ego, but she has grown so much since the beginning of DA2. She's had more than 10 years of of experiencing the effect her pride can have, of understanding what true suffering is, and of finding happiness regardless of it all.
I'm not saying it would be easy on her, it's not going to be, but she has the support and love of her family to keep her grounded. In a lot of ways I see Merrill's journey as a mirror of my Lavellan's. They both were a bit naive about the world (Merrill more so from her lack of human interaction), they both wanted to preserve elven culture, to know more about their history, but time softened their more radical ideas and integrated them with the rest of the world. They both learned elf isn't always best and you can find lethallin's amongst every people, no matter what they look like.
I have a lot of sympathy for Merrill, but I think that's because she reminds me so forcefully of what I was like back in high school/college. Clever but naive, convinced that I knew better than anyone else, that I was somehow the special-est snowflake who was immune to the consequences of what I did. She drives me nuts in DA2 (I always rivalried her), but I can't help feeling for her regardless.
I don't think Merrill ever as an individual thinks of herself as better than other people, but as far as her culture goes she does think it's the better (at least in the beginning) you can definitely see this with her conversation with Fenris. She's a sympathetic character if you take the time to know her.
I think every high-schooler thinks they are the special-est little snowflake X).
Awww, I like Merrill. I understand her drive to save the past, even if her understanding of it is incomplete. She can be stubborn and naive all at once, but I find it usually more endearing than annoying.
Spoiler
Out of likes, but I agree with the Merrill part and my Lavellan was absorbing information and putting it in the back of her mind. She didn't have time to process then.... Poor thing,
