The difference between Tal-Vashoth and qunari Bull went a long, long way toward making the character more interesting to me. I give him the side-eye almost as often as Solas now in my Adaar playthrough.

Volume 1 is where it's at as far as new information goes. Volume 2 has a little bit, but it's mostly a summarization of events from DAO to now. There's the dwarven ship captains from across the sea who come to trade goods and spices for large quantities of lyrium. They were a regular appearance up until 200 (I think) years ago, and are only just now returning after some "great cataclysm."

 

Qunari are said to have come from "across the sea" as well. The Executors? Also across the sea. The ancient Neromenian human tribes also came to Thedas from across the sea at the behest of Dumat. Out east AND out west, there are other continents and a lot of potential weirdness going on.

Looking back on it, I could kick myself.

 

Solas is IMO not a very good liar.  He gets by on omission and half-truths, and I've met RPG characters like that before.  So I was suspicious of him from the start.  Iron Bull, though...he straight-up tells you he's Ben-Hassrath.  Gatt tells you his name is Hissrad--liar.  How f***ing good of a liar do you have to be where that's your goddamn role in the Qun, which defines your very existence?!  And I still took him at his word for most things!

 

I don't second-guess the impact that friendship has on him, though.  Come Trespasser, Tal-Vashoth and Qun Bull are almost two different characters.  So the Chargers matter.  His friendship with the Inquisitor matters.  Like Solas, he needed someone to give him a nudge.

Totally. The Fade isn't a regional Thedas thing, therefore it would make sense that the Veil acting as a "cup" to hold it would have to encompass the entire world. Presumably, the ancient elves had cities and temples in far flung places outside of Thedas (where else would that creepy set of codexes in Trespasser be from?. 

That would be...actually really weird if the Veil was only present in Thedas, and not other continents. That would mean the Executors, dwarves, and maybe other ancient elves would have full connection to the Fade and all be potentially powerful mages. And such a disadvantage for Thedas, even with the might of the Imperium.

I was, at first, but then I thought about it and was actually surprised that no one had tried to betray you already.  It would have been a great way for Cory to trip you up.

 

The Inquisitor isn't the Illusive Man.  She doesn't have personal control over everything that happens.  The Inquisition is already too big for that by Skyhold, though the game doesn't do a great job of showing us the structure and extent of the organization.  She has to delegate to her advisors, who in turn delegate to others.  All the way from clicking Cullen's war table mission to protect caravans, down to the cook making your dinner from those supplies.

 

The Inner Circle is really just that--your inner circle of elites.  Beyond that, the Inquisitor has almost no meaningful in-game contact with the people in this huge organization.  Quizzy inspires a lot of hope and faith in people, but s/he's not perfect, and while I think it's hard for characters to personally betray Lavellan, it's easy for someone lower on the totem pole to betray the Inquisition as a whole.

but I just thought that the Inquisitor was a strong enough symbol during the Breach that people wouldn't be willing to turn against. She's considered the Herald of Andraste by many, yet she's a Dalish elf and mage. How can you betray that? She's too awesome to betray... or so I thought.

I really think that Bioware missed out the chance to have some betrayal quests.  Call me old fashioned, but I miss the times when I'd have assassins trying to kill me.

That's seriously a straight up psychological disarming move that is specifically meant to lower your guard. Here's the thing--it gets brought up once, and then never again.  The rest of the time, he's your big, funny, disarming goofball.  And he's so easygoing and chill and willing to answer questions.  I think the post going around tumblr mentioned it: his whole schtick up until the dreadnought was calculated to drop your guard, both as a player and as the Inquisitor.  And he's so good at it that it didn't trigger any warning bells for me--even though it totally should have.  Because he'd probably convinced himself to believe it too, until that moment of crisis.

This is so true. I think deep down my Lavellan knew something was off with Solas, but let her feelings blind her. How else wouldn't she be suspicious about him never answering her questions about his past. It's because she didn't ask, because she knew something was off.

People were saying he looked more angry, to which I was like: Huh? He looks sad but in a stoic and resolved way. It was clear he was trying to steel himself through some serious feels.

 

Just look at main game Solas and how calm and collected he can look in the middle of what we know was a lot of turmoil.

 

Remember in the Mage quest when he says, "I am dying, but no matter?" He was very calm.

 

Just think how much he must be hurting if it clearly shows.

It's a little bit of conceit showing. You are a symbol as the Inquisitor. A powerful one, but still just a symbol despite the very real and immediate effect you have on the world. To a servant, you're essentially just the Maker with a face. To a solder who has never seen you, you're Andraste with a face. It's like saying, "how could anyone disobey the principal when he says we should do our best in school?"

As far as all the elven agents Solas picks up, the Inquisition may have saved the world in total, but they have not specifically made a significant impact in how elves are treated or regarded. Even as a Dalish. Helping Briala is a good step, but there have been no fundamental changes otherwise in perception. To an impoverished city elf or a Dalish clan who wants to be more action oriented, actively helping a cause (and a god) specifically for the betterment of elves and the immediate satisfaction of changing the status quo seems like a much more tempting offer.
