I don't know if I am remembering exactly what Patrick said verbatim. Was quite a long time ago. I don't know if it was the NA interview, or if it was the panel that he called in to, or if it was somewhere else. I know I suck for mentioning something that I don't have the link to back it up.
I also could be crazy and remembering things completely wrong. It might have applied only to being an elf. I don't know why there needs to be justification for a character's sexuality beyond it being what it is. People have preferences *shrug*. Dorian is gay, Sera is a lesbian, Josie is bisexual. I don't have a horse in that argument so I won't say anything further than that.

Was there a furor with Morrigan and the Dark Ritual? I don't remember that being a problem, so if it's something where you don't have to do it and it's up to the player whether they want to deal with that or not...I dunno. People get bent out of shape about weird things.
That said, I don't think they'll do something like the Dark Ritual again. Especially not with Solas, who's already been less-than-upfront.

When the romance was first announced they had "super story reasons" for the gating and every immediately assumed babies. I think they were just talking about the elf only thing. But not long ago I heard someone say that they heard someone else say that the reason for gender wasn't revealed yet? I kind of think it might just be a situation similar to the one in Easy A - Olive's story about how she pretend lost her virginity didn't even resemble what it did when she first told Rhiannon by the time it got back to her.

God I hope not, as much as I love reading fluffy Solas dad headcannons and stories. I can only see Lavellan and Solas having a kid as being really tragic and sad. Solas and Lavellan are sad enough to begin with, no need to bring a kid into it.
Could just be me, but I will think this story is going in a very sick, twisted direction if Solas brings a child into this world, given what he plans to do.
yeah a child living through the apocalypse would be pretty sick
also, I can't imagine Solas not using contraceptives with Lavellan, especially since he was so careful with her in the first place

Yeah, I edited my post but I think the devs are relieved to have Kieran and what to do with him behind them. And I think Solas/Lavellan is already tragic and screwed up quite enough at this point.
As for the whole Dark Ritual being optional....it was optional.....if you would condemn your character to die. It's a bit of a high price. Though I headcanon my Warden was both regretful and resentful a bit after talking Alistair into it.

The "super story reasons" was basically for why only elves. Why only females? Well, because he's straight. When you decide the sexuality for your Inquisitor do you pick a reason why? I don't imagine most do. I imagine when the writers write a character it's pretty much the same. The character came out the way they are and that's they way they are.
I never did understand everyone's insistence that there be a "reason" for why Solas is straight.

Like if the kid lived through it because of Solas's genes or something, and when he's older he realizes that the reason he doesn't have a mom is because dad blew up the world and killed her. Or Solas's plan not only kills Lavellan but his own kid too. "I had a kid once, but then I destroyed the world and he died."

True, but considering that the first installment in the series had a possibility of performing Dark Ritual and conceiving of a child (even going as far as convincing female Warden's lover to do the deed with Morrigan), it wouldn't be something that's without precedent in the series.
They've also not shied away from giving Morrigan an arc as mother to Kieran in OGB world-state (with it likely being a catalyst for her to change and accept Mythal's plan to be her inheritor, even if only for the sake of her son) and it seems to be something they plan to expand it further in the future - question is whether something similar would be repeated in case of Solavellan?
Like I said, I'm unconvinced, but I can't think of anything else as of now - and Solas being elfy and old doesn't really smack of "super story reason" for me, especially if we don't even know if the 'ancient of anciest elves' even really care for gender much. But who knows - I suppose we're yet to find out what exactly they mean by this.

IMO the Solavellan relationship has plenty of problems without introducing more. At this point, more complications start to sound just plain ridiculous.
