I'd pair my Lavellan, who by DA4 will be at least in her mid thirties, with a young inexperienced man just out of his teens. She will teach him to fight. She will teach him the Game. He will adore her in a complicated way as a mentor figure. Solas will be jealous, and my Lavellan, who's an insufferable troll, will enjoy this.

Cole says this "When this is done, I will slip back safely, a spirit. Someone is hurting. He needs me to remember who he is.”
Kinda makes me wonder... will Cole return in DA4 after making comments like this? Be it as a human or spirit? Either spirit or optimistic young human!Cole may help Solas change his mind, since Cole was someone Solas cared about, by default, no matter how much he liked or disliked Inquisitor.
I imagine that existence of Cole (and Cassandra, I guess) could help 'balance out the scales' in case someone played a disapproved Inquisitor - while I'd love for actions of my Quizzy to have deep impact in other games (no matter if they appear as protagonists, semi-protagonists, important NPCs or a mission board) I can't imagine Bioware creating world states that would vary too drastically between one another.
Even for the sake of player agency, they're going to have to create a counterbalance of some sort, in case the hero(es) from previous installments have messed up, so players wouldn't riot that all their work to make a difference in future Dragon Age has gone to waste (even if the optimal-est of optimal endings would require setting a chain of very specific options from previous games in DA Keep).

Oh
Cole.
I'm replaying the last part of the base game and I'm preparing myself dinner so the game is just running in the background.
The team's composition is Solas, Sera and Cole and every once it a while Cole just "harasses" Sera and she freaks out.
So cute.

So if anyone ran through Trespasser with a Cullen romance and got married... is it true there are Dalish wedding vows as an option if you play an elf?

I tend to prefer female protagonists to male, but if we do get 2 PCs that can play off each other, I almost want to make a male PC who's the polar opposite of my Lavellan, just to see those conversations
New PC: Your ex-boyfriend's an ass.
Lavellan: Excuse me?
New PC: His agents ambushed me on the way here. My left buttcheek will never be the same again.
Lavellan: ...right.
New PC: I'm just saying. Withhold sex or something until he behaves.
Lavellan: It's a bit more complicated than that.
New PC: Ugh. Fine. Whatever. Your artificer owes me a new buttcheek.
Even more entertaining when you consider that with a two-protagonist game, you'd be presented with dialogue wheels for each. Getting into bitter arguments with myself through in game discussion? Bahaha. I'm sold!
Especially if my other, other self gets to be Antivan. :3

So. Spoiled myself well and good on Trespasser - not going to get to play it any time soon so I figured what the hell. Took a while for non-Solas Romance playthroughs to get uploaded to Youtube.
General thoughts and opinions on the revelations we were given; on a moral level, Solas is the worst companion we've ever had. Worse the Loghain, worse than Anders, worse than Isabela, worse than Zevran, worse than Sten. He is no better than Corypheus. He's just got more self pity. I am disappointed that the dialogue options in the final conversation with him cannot be stronger in condemning him for the monster that he is, and calling him out on his Messiah and Martyr complexes.
All that being said, this does make Solas interesting, so that's a plus. I look forward to how the future games handle him.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. I think the worst thing about Solas is just how convinced he's being self-sacrificing for the betterment of the world (at least the world of the elves and spirits that is).
At least characters like Zevran and Isabela know what they're doing is wrong and make no excuses.
And I agree that it does make him very interesting!

Can I just say... Oh. My. God, my cat is driving me crazy.
Since yesterday evening she brought 5 mice (4 of them dead, one alive for me to catch) to the house from outside, seemingly to feed me! ... And she wants to go outside to catch even more!
I feel like there's a lack of understanding between us, cat, that surpasses lack of understanding between ancient elves and modern Thedosians!
... though I am still touched that this is your personal way of showing that you care about me ![]()

Solas is a grim and fatalistic idiot who has questionable plans and bad ideas, but is done in such away that if he's handled right will be one of the absolute best characters BioWare has ever created. I can appreciate every ounce of him as a companion and antagonist and can understand where he is coming from -- even if I don't agree with it. The hearbreak icing of the romance is awesome in its own right, but I'm far more invested in Solas as a character and the story behind him anyway. I'm looking well forward to the future myself.

Wow, all these posts about Spirit Cole is making me think maybe I will make him more spirit-like in my "ideal playthrough" after all. I know there's no right answer, but I want to feel like I did the right thing.
In my first playthrough, I didn't talk to him that much (he never seemed to want to talk, and I wanted to respect his wishes) but I got the party banter where he mentions he didn't become a mage because "he" (the real Cole) would have wanted to be that way, so she let Varric make him more human to honor his wishes to honor the real Cole.
However, this playthrough, I've talked to Cole a bit more, and I'm getting the impression that he wants to be accepted for who he is. Asking him questions above the tavern, he mentions how Solas "sees the spirit and accepts" and how Rhys rejected him when he found out Cole was a spirit because "he saw only a monster." (
)
Between that and all the youtube videos that show Spirit Cole looking more... well, happy as a spirit (happy that he's found people who accept him for who he is, happy to be able to help people around the clock, happy to realize there's nothing wrong with being a spirit in Trespasser, and happy to return to the Fade and help Solas "remember who he is"), if my character feels like Spirit is the better route to go when she reaches his personal quest, I won't feel so discontent.

(Could you believe, I worried about romancing Cullen because my girl is very devoutly Dalish, and I was afraid that their love wouldn't work out in the long run, since I wasn't sure if he'd be okay with her sticking to her elven ways in the case of marriage, children, etc? In some ways, he's more accepting of her Dalish heritage than Solas.

It's interesting. Previously, even with the post credit scene with Flemeth, I've always been rather meh with Solas before this.
But now? Now he's got this very visceral reaction from me. Now I want to beat him to a bloody pulp with my bare hands. But in a good way. Not like with Michel where I just have an irrational hatred of the character, but in a way where I'm actually impressed they were able to get this rise out of me.

Honestly at this point, I think Cullen is just happy to be stable and sane and loved. The rest is just details. Yes, the Dalish quizzy's heritage isn't his heritage, but that's not important to him.
Besides, we're already at capacity for people crapping on the Dalish

The last villain who got a reaction that visceral out of me was Jon Irenicus. And he's one of my absolute favorite BioWare characters ever.
