Solas is a grim and fatalistic idiot who has questionable plans and bad ideas, but is done in such away that if he's handled right will be one of the absolute best characters BioWare has ever created. I can appreciate every ounce of him as a companion and antagonist and can understand where he is coming from -- even if I don't agree with it. The hearbreak icing of the romance is awesome in its own right, but I'm far more invested in Solas as a character and the story behind him anyway. I'm looking well forward to the future myself.

Same. I also don't think that his plan may be as idiotic as it may appear to some for now - Solas appears to be too smart for his plan to be just one giant bad idea, even if his perspective is skewed by grief, guilt and thousands of years of apparently near-death slumber. Giving an antagonist, no matter how sympathetic, a plan that is just moronic or hard to relate to in any way is no better than turning him to straightforward muahaha!villain, IMO.

Hence I'm petty sure that in DA4 or 5 we'll find out more than what was revealed in Trespasser, which may give us pause and make reconsider if we really want to see Thedas remain as it is, or will we risk change (even if it isn't exactly what either Solas or the rest of the world currently wants). Bioware seems to like that kind of twists and reveals, so I don't expect them to stop anytime soon.

I get that they wanted the wedding to stay low key, but seriously, they invited none of their friends or companions... except for the creepy "stares into my soul" eyed dog?

Yeah, although Solas isn't my favorite romance, <3 Zevran <3 gets that spot (Zevran finds nothing surprising about that), he definitely is the most dynamic and I would say the most interesting companion you've ever had. He's probably my favorite BioWare character, which is ironic because just as Solas does do anything in halves I feel like fans don't like him in halves either. I either see outright adoration for Solas, or a good deal of loathing... of course I spend 99% of the time on this thread...sooo I might just be misinformed.

It's interesting. Previously, even with the post credit scene with Flemeth, I've always been rather meh with Solas before this.

But now? Now he's got this very visceral reaction from me. Now I want to beat him to a bloody pulp with my bare hands. But in a good way. Not like with Michel where I just have an irrational hatred of the character, but in a way where I'm actually impressed they were able to get this rise out of me.

That's the mark of a good character and good writing. Even if you hate him, and by hate I mean have a reaction to him beyond "lol he's an ugly bald supremacist murderer," then they succeeded in making you feel something. That's far better than "eh, whatever." I do hope we can see some sort of redemption path though. Friendship and romance dialogue suggests there might be something like that there, and even Solas himself doesn't seem like he really wants to do what he will try to do anyway. Whatever is going on is a pile of complex, for sure.

Going to agree with you on Michel. Hate that sumb*tch. <_<

I feel like there's a lack of understanding between us, cat, that surpasses lack of understanding between ancient elves and modern Thedosians!

... though I am still touched that this is your personal way of showing that you care about me

See, Solas? Cats and humans have this lack of understanding, and yet we can live in (mostly) harmony without having to burn the world in raw chaos. Just saying. If a cat can manage, so can you :P

Oh, favorite BioWare character. That's hard. Solas hasn't been a villain long enough to topple Jon Irenicus on my BioWare villain list, but he's making a strong push for it.

I have so many characters whom I like for so many different reasons. But Solas definitely falls into the type I like best: polarizing ones, who inspire love and loathing. Anders, Miranda, Morrigan, etc.

I feel the same way about Anders. Honestly I don't know what it is that makes me despise him so much, yet still love and sympathize with Solas. There both radical, misguided, with a serious case of martyrdom, they both betrayed your trust and possibly your love, and chose their perception of the greater good over you, yet I loooaaaatttthhhheeee Anders, and love Solas.

They did do a good job getting different reactions to him. I wrote a lengthy post about it at one point.

Honestly at this point, I think Cullen is just happy to be stable and sane and loved.  The rest is just details.  Yes, the Dalish quizzy's heritage isn't his heritage, but that's not important to him.

Besides, we're already at capacity for people crapping on the Dalish  <_<

True that.  <_<

That's part of why I was afraid to continue the romance with him. (The other part is Solas; romancing anyone after Solas gets difficult after a while because they're not Solas.) After Solas and Sera dumping on the Dalish every chance they got, and then Dorian making well-meaning but still innocently bigoted comments to my male Dalish (not "bad," just things like "how quaint" when seeing a Dalish Camp or "Tevinter is where Thedas truly began" in conversation) I thought, "I can't do this again."

For once, it might be nice to have a playthrough where my Lavellan is happy to be stable and sane and loved. (And accepted for who she is.)

Solas is planning the complete destruction of your world.  It's a lot worse than anything Anders ever did.  But in terms of the relationship, Anders is IMO a lot more personal of a betrayal. I mean, let's be honest; unless you're playing a very particular type of Hawke who jumps on board the burning revolution train, he manipulates and emotionally blackmails you into helping him murder hundreds of people.  It makes Solas's lie by omission about his identity seem not that bad.

Spirit Cole makes me both happy and sad. happy because I thought the Krem thing was so adorable.....happy because atleast Compassion is out there trying to help Solas......

....but oh so sad for my Lavellan. I mean.....Cole was seriously like her best friend.

That good bye would have been sad. At the same time, Cole probably would have said something so sweet to cheer her up.

Plus I guess it is good that my Lavellan is a mage. I guess that means she can be visited by Cole in dreams and stuff.

So much <3 for Spirit Cole.

And I know it seems like super controversy out there....but I actually thought the human Cole stuff in Trespasser was cute. I get where people are coming from in how angry it made them.....but I thought it was sweet.

I was kind of weirded out by the Cole/Maryden relationship at first because I wasn't there to see it developing over two years. Honestly, I'm glad that he's allowed to grow as a character and to explore more of what it means to have a body, to be human and have the wants and needs that come along with it. It's like Solas said to Command - having a physical body is both a strength and a shackle, so seeing him deal with those aspects is cool to see.

I have Spirit Cole and he gives me much hope. Cole isn't giving up on him and neither is my Lavellan. Cole's "greatly approves" was another sign. Okay everyone else, disapprove, think she's maybe a bit compromised....at least Cole is on her side. :D

edit: Though yes, he goes back to the Fade because he is needed. He can do what he can to help there. Cole and Dorian were her closest friends there, so it will be quite difficult without both of them right nearby, but BFF Dorian has crystal calling, and Cole will do what he can. I also headcanon her as close to Leliana, who is Divine, so she's the only one still left nearby. And also why I settled for the option I did.

I'm definitely making Cole more spirit for my canon run. He's on both of their sides and wants to help them both, he cares about them both and wants them both to be happy, and being more spirit means he can visit them both more easily. Also, he gets spirity angel wings in one of his later upgrades and it's really cool to watch.

(This might sound strange, but have you ever romanced a companion with one protagonist and their relationship was so perfect that you can't bring yourself to romance the same companion with a different protagonist because it's not the same? That's how I feel about Josie and my Adaar.)

Mine is a hunter - which is strange, because she's also a delicate, pampered princess.

She's 10 years old now, yet she's still brisk enough to shower me with mice, especially during autumn^^; - it's still better than a few years back, when she was a passionate bird-killer (and I myself adore birds and wish I could have a few as pets, alas...)

She's so much of a huntress in fact, that I'm consider renaming her from Astrea to Andruil

I wrote this because some people couldn't understand why so many people hated Solas.

And I'm glad you came onto post Former_Fiend! I know we might come off as Solas obsessed fanpeoples, but we're actually a rational sort of group!

I think whilst Solas and Anders have a lot in common, they approach romance very differently.

With Anders, you have to be, as Sable so eloquently put it, 'on the burning revolution train' or else you're manipulated and twisted into following his plans and jumping into hell with him. Arguably, that's just what Anders wants from his lover - a martyrdom partner in crime who takes mage freedom as seriously as he does - but I wish he at least said as much plainly, allowing you to clearly break up with him before he went forward with his plans, or the chance to argue back and attempt to convince him that his plans were terrible.

Solas, in contrast, takes great pains to ensure his lover doesn't get caught up in his awful plans. That is the last thing he honestly wants - he'll refuse your involvement, even. When he realises that this relationship will clash with his plans, he calls it quits - this way, both of you will be able to follow your principles clearly, and won't be forced to choose between love or principle at any.point. It's one of the things I actually admire greatly about Solas - breaking it off was a very mature, sensible, good decision.

Solas does not mess you about. He has a very honest and serious approach to the relationship, despite everything. Anders doesn't think through it nearly as much and is quite willing to hurt you in order to get what he needs. Which makes him a much nastier, messier dating experience. At the very least, Anders really sucks at relationships and does not respect their partner's needs, desires - including what they want from the relationship, and what they will and will not compromise - and differences.

yeah she says
Sylaise enaste var aravel. Lama, ara las mir lath. Bellanaris

Sylaise (the hearthkeeper, goddess of the domestic, protector of children; they sprinkle their aravels with Sylaise's fragrant tree-moss, and ask that she protect them and all within) bless our aravel (literally, bless our home, but also bless our physical and spiritual journey). Lama is something new as far as I can see, ara is found in aneth ara, ara seranna-ma, ara ma'athlan vhenas, ara ma'desen melar, ara ma'nedan ashir... something like I, me, my [I think]. Las is to give/grant, lath is love, mir is my, bellanaris is eternity. Something like, [Lama], I give you my love. Forever.

Lovely... But this needs to be said to Solas, though  :(

I liked the horsemaster's underhanded racist comment about halla riders. It just seemed very realistic, like something I would headcanon happening to Lavellan, but the game was too big to put in. And his remark when you commented on him is exactly what a bigoted person would reply with...minus the halla bit.

"What? I'm not racist/sexist/homophobic, I looove the ____ or I have a ____ friend!"

Not how that works.

At the very least, Anders really sucks at relationships and respecting their partner's needs, desires, and differences.

I think Weekes took pains to make sure that Solas tried not to hurt Lavellan as best he could.  The relationship was already going to be feelsy and tragic enough.  And I think Sebastian is spot-on when he talks about Anders in Act 3: Anders will never put you above what he wants.  Ever.

See how amazing that is!? I can't stand Loghain, out of your companions, the only reason I hate Anders more is because it was more personal.

I hated Loghain at first, and killed him in both my worldstates.  Now I want to go back and apologize :( I still don't agree with a lot of the stuff he did, but he was absolutely right about the Orlesians.  They are useless, vicious asshats and if they ever lay hands on Ferelden, I will personally bring Hakkon back from the Fade and turn their stupid racist country into my personal ice rink.

Zevran will only ever be meant for my Tabris! And I could never play a new Lavellan and romance Solas, that would feel like cheating XD

Why do so many people pick an Adaar for Josie anyway? I see a lot for Dorian too, but I assume that's for juicy Tevinter vs Qun drama.

I'm planning on one day doing a play through for all the romances and since I haven't played a male yet I have a two-handed Adaar, archer Lavellan, and sword and shield Trevelyan planned. I actually want to start a new game with one of them soon, but out of Josie, Cass, and Dorian who should I romance first and with whom should they be romanced with?

Important life questions!!!!
