I feel like this is something everyone keeps saying:  "Everyone else is so angry, except me, I guess, b/c my Lavellan is kind...."  But then when I look for the posts in this thread where other solasmancers are like, "You know what Solas, F*#! YOU, we're done, and that's canon," there aren't (that m)any.  No it's all, "Well, obviously I'm sort of grumpy b/c my boyfriend is a megalomaniac, but it's not like I'd ABANDON him."

megalomaniac is actually a good term for him. He thinks only he can save the world, and that's disconcerting. No one else can help. He can't truly trust anyone. He knows what must be done, and no matter how Lavellan might care about him or want to help him, he still believes only he can do what must be done.

This scares me.

I almost spilled tea at my keyboard (I had the 'indomitable focus' one), then just stared at the screen being all "What just happened???"

Ha, my first playthrough was a mage Adaar, so every time I hear the indomitable focus one, I can't help thinking "he means it in a friendly way".

I don't think the general idea of Solas having past lovers is what concerns some people. It's Solas having a lover who is is historically significant that potentially "cheapens" the romance we have now. Solas being lovers with Andraste, Solas being lovers with Mythal, Solas being lovers with Andruil, Solas being lovers with Tyrdda Bright-Ax (that one obviously not, but it was an early theory).  So what are YOU in comparison to any of these women? How do YOU measure up to their accomplishments? How do YOU measure up to the devotion that Solas could/does feel for someone like Andruil or Mythal, who are essentially immortal and have had significantly more time and opportunities to closely bond with Solas. Not that our Lavellan isn't special or significant, but they were also thought of as a gremlin for half the relationship, and they are essentially being measured up against the standards of significant women.

Note: I don't believe Solas was actually lovers with any of these people, but they ARE people that others have theorized could have been past lovers at one point or another. They were just used as an example of the dead wife trope and impossible standards that make some people uncomfortable. Solas having some unnamed-but-emotionally-significant lover is not the same as one of the Evanuris or even a prophet from human history.

I mean, Abelas is sort of a poor-Lavellan's Solas...not as funny, warm, powerful, or wise...but at least he's available.  #callmeabelas

Haha agreed. I never personally got the appeal. The more complex and layered the character, the more they appeal to me. Abelas and Felassan just don't compare in my book.

I'm a Solas person through and through!  He got me months before we even knew him.

My first was a mage Trev, and the indomitable focus part really didn't impress me.

But the second time around: I have yet to see it dominated.

Whaaat? :D

Yes, but at the same time he keeps making it rather obvious that he'd be saving the world for a terrible price. So I don't think that 'megalomaniac' fits him that well - he has trust issues, that's for sure, which skews his perspective and doesn't let him accept help from others, but the way he treats approved/romanced Lavellan and Cole suggests that he absolutely doesn't want them to share the burden of what he has to do. It will destroy him, in one way or another. That much if patently clear.

My Inquisitor pondered their relationship in Trespasser, but nothing implied anything but only added more unanswered questions.

I bet Cassandra is the most reluctant Solavellan shipper in the world.

On the one hand, she sees the immediate practicality in stopping Solas immediately, with a very big sword if possible.

On the other hand, she is mildly disgusted with herself for finding the present situation - Lavellan and Solas, star-crossed lovers who won't let the immanent end of the world vanquish their love for each other - amazingly romantic.

Oh, Cassandra, never change <3

I'd go more with "control freak". He has to be the one to do it. Nobody else will do it right.

I kind of like the idea of it, personally. I'm not sure why.  And dang, if he loved someone like Mythal, loving someone like Lavellan is probably good for him. I really enjoy Lavellan as a grounding force, which is why I'm happy they got rid of the Fade Mark. I always played mine like a normal woman who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up strapped with a power that was the only thing that could save Thedas. Solas needs someone to bring him down from the world of wielding immense power to single-handedly change the world.

That's for sure - but him being a control freak is related to his deep trust issues.

And then he analyzes seashells on a beach somewhere to see if they have spirits (when it's all said and done)?

I agree, out of likes.

It doesn't bother me knowing that Solas has had past lovers, because of course he has. It bothers me when people theorize he might be attracted to Lavellan because she reminds him of someone or that his past lover was someone sooo huge and soooo important in his life that he hasn't completely let it go by the time he meets Lavellan.

ugh I hope so

I really don't want him to either

a)die

b)go Fen'Harel crazy (ruthless acts like killing Felassan to achieve his main goal; he's already been doing this and said he will)

c)have emotional baggage that will prevent him from ever truly being happy (at least more than he already has)

I see all this things happening, honestly, and that just makes me more sad.

This is so depressing  :(

Ha, my first playthrough was a mage Adaar, so every time I hear the indomitable focus one, I can't help thinking "he means it in a friendly way".

My first playthrough was my romance Lavellan. After finishing the game (twice) with her I created a Trevelyan.

...

...

What the fluff!?? Was I just completely miss reading him??

Is nothing we did special??

I was half waiting for all my flirt options with him.

For me the most depressing thing has happened already. He has compromised his moral principles. I'm only curious how far he'll get and whether we'll get to experience more of what it's like to romance a dark overlord. Enjoy the ride.

When I have feelings of ex-inadequacy, they're not that rational, haha. If I found out tomorrow that my SO used to be in a relationship with a president, I'd worry "what if I snore more than the president?" rather than "what if my lack of experience with peace treaties is a turn-off?"

So basically the same stuff for any ex.

Ugh I know. In a lot of ways he's already gone too far. I still can't help hoping that he's salvageable beyond any blatantly tragic means.

We all know that the possibility of our Lavellans and him setting down in a nice hut with a picket fence is completely gone. We also know that anything remotely similar to a nice, normal, happy ending is gone. All that's left seems to be pretty tragic. I just want the best ending for him possible, literally and figuratively.

Also, to clarify my own position on Solas/Mythal (since I spoke in opposition to it):

I'm not against the idea of characters having emotionally significant others - not at all. However, I'd be upset with Solas/Mythal specifically because it would likely imply much of his good work freeing slaves and fighting the corrupt Evanuris was driven by vengence and passion for his dead lover, rather than being primarily about justice for the elven people. It makes political principle about one dead lover.

This isn't to say vengence isn't a worthy subject to red or write about, but I think in this case, I think that cheapens his motivations in Trespasser. I could almost see how someone could justify to themselves ending the world knowing that it'd make life better for people in the long run, but if it's instead about avenging a lover... eh, that's just wrong, I don't know how you could do that.

I think what makes it worse is that it is Solas' personal relationship with the Inquisitor which changes his opinion on whether modern elves = people. In the case of Solavellen, that would be TWICE where Solas' political opinions are formed on the backs of failed relationships.

Whilst personal experience inevitably colours opinions on politics, I think most people are able to decide what principles are important and hold themselves to good ethical practice without a girlfriend. I mean, it'd reduce discussions about the how the whole of society should be structured and how power should be divided and treated to a soap opera.

That's why I feel Solas/Mythal cheapens his character. I'm actually pretty fond of when NPCs have lives and loves outside of the duration of the game, but I think that specific pairing places limits on his character motivations and makes him potentially less nuanced and interesting. I'd like to believe that some part of Solas believes he's doing something right, that he's doing something justice, because being completely motivated by guilt when the whole world is at stake is more than a bit self-absorbed.

Mordin.  One of his lines are "Had to be me.  Someone else might have gotten it wrong."

And he says that maybe when they're done saving the Universe he'll retire on a beach somewhere.  Shepard tells him he'll go insane inside 5 minutes.  So he says maybe he'll analyze seashells.  One of my favorite moments in Mass Effect 3.
