I just found out that my real-life boyfriend intends to transfer to a university that's 8 hours away after this semester. I found out at dinner with his parents, where he asked for his aunt's number to talk to her about finding housing before he transfers. Glad I was important enough after a year and a half together to be told first, or at least directly.  :(

Suddenly, the Solas romance is that much harder. My fictional character's fictional video game boyfriend leaves without a word, twice, and my boyfriend intended to move without (apparently) telling me.

I need that fluffy Cully-Wully romance now.

I might actually start another DAO playthrough for this. I need a fictional roleplaying romance where the guy is committed and never leaves.  :crying:

Hey, to add to everyone's hearts  <3 and many hugs.

Okay, time to wonder something about elf physiology - we know that they're different from humans, they even supposedly have cat-like eyes (they see well in the dark, etc.).

I wonder if they have other cat-like abilities though?

NOOOO WHY AM I OUT OF LIKES NOW?!

All of the <3 for cats. And maybe elves, but let's face it, mostly cats.

In fact, I'm curious if others have a story of how their Lavellans got their vallaslin.

I don't have a specific story for how, but I did think of why they look the way they do.  My Lavellan had June's vallaslin, and all her life, she liked making things.  She's an artificer, so she literally lives or dies on the strength of her craft.

Her vallaslin are also fainter, though still visible.  I headcanoned her father as the one who regularly negotiated with humans on behalf of the clan (farmers, merchants, etc.)  She accompanied him, and she figured that lighter vallaslin makes her look less intimidating.  Her early exposure to humans is why the Keeper ultimately picks her to go to the Conclave.

I'm INTJ/ENFP, seriously, both of them, tested quite a few years back. What does this mean!?!?

Ummmm...I think I need to join Team Optimism too...Is there a base near the blanket fort? :P

Trespasser: Solas, male Lavellan and a female Lavellan(?). Lovely artwork though.

Oh that's nice (as well as the others!).

I think I'm INTJ or something of the sort.

I'm working with an image at the moment from the deep roads concept art. It has me wondering when we will see something like it:

bigimage.jpg

I think it's a representation of Falon'din? It's so creepy, I like it.

I seem to be an INFJ.  Have to say the descriptions and explanations for it was a bit freaky first time I looked it up.  I've done a lot of the personality things over the years and while some things do fit to a point, INFJ was 100% accurate.  It was interesting to understand the how's and why's of some of the things I think and do.  I don't live my life by it or anything like that.  But it's nice to have that kind of insight as to how I tick.

My headcanon is very, very close to this. Nirwen's father is a merchant and she accompanied him sometimes. Part of why she was chosen for the Conclave was her experience with humans and her ability to be diplomatic and intuitive enough to not be questioning them all the time and calling them shems at every turn. To make a good spy, you need to be able to have conversations and relate to people. Her vallaslin was also fainter in color. Mythal's.

Thank you.

P.S. On-topic, I'm INFP-T (Introverted, Observant, Feeling, Prospecting, Turbulent. I don't know, I would have thought myself more Intuitive than Observant, but oh well.)

I was INFP-A.

So, we make ultra-Mediator if summoned.

Yeah, I was trying to work out why the Keeper would send my Lavellan when there are probably others in the clan who are way more badass than a level 1 rogue.  Clariel is capable enough at the start, but she's also quite shy and a little skittish.  So it had to be for some other reason--basically, she was the least likely to fly off the handle and blow her cover :P

My Lavellan figured there was no way cover is going to work because of the bright brazen tattoos all over her face clearly marking her as Dalish.  :P I mean she didn't stroll up to them like "wat up I'm a spy" but yeah. Straight talking, I'm here to observe on behalf of my people. Can't hide dem tats

Ouch. I'm sorry.  If he's that insensitive, maybe you dodged something. Also kind of in the middle of relationship issues...it's never easy. <3 <3 But yes, distract yourself with some things that make you feel better and Zevran is if nothing, dedicated once you peel back his layers and find out he really hopes for something deep and sweet.

That's just it though, usually he's so much better about things like this. Our relationship has always been stable and loving since we first started going out a year and a half ago. (Except for the topic of sex, but that's par for the course for an asexual and non-asexual.)

I mean, granted, he can forget himself and say insensitive things in front of his parents at times, but it's usually about little things like movies or television. (Like the other day he asked across the room, "Have you seen Monty Python's Flying Circus?" I said, ". . . Yes?" His mom said, "Well, of course, you wouldn't be dating her if she hadn't seen Monty Python." And he said, "Of course, I have standards" with this big grin.)

This was just... out of nowhere. I confronted him and he looked like a kicked puppy (of course), and said he loved me so much and our relationship meant so much to him that he was afraid to tell me about it and what it would do to our relationship and... *sigh* I told him honestly that I'm fine with him going to that school since it has the best program for the type of career that he wanted to go into, but he could have told me instead of letting me find out when he was talking about it with his parents at the dinner table.

Chiara, have a hug from me. Thinking of you.

Gryff does basically scream "DALISH PRIDE WOOO!" :D  Or at least, her appearance does.

My Lavellan's tattoos are burgundy, and faint enough where they could be convincingly covered up with makeup.  She just picked a support caravan for the Chantry and tagged along, figuring no one would notice one extra elf.  And she was right until the world literally blew up in her face :P

In my headcanon, she's had some years of experience with humans and has earned this at this point. She also feels a bit inclined to take on certain other tasks and carries a mild insecurity about being a bit of a disappointment over having chosen love with her girlfriend for some time until that ended and never being a mother. On the other hand, those lack of ties, well, they make her even better suited for this spying business.

She's 30/31 at the beginning of DAI and I remember you said Clariel was really young.

Yeah like, even if there were some spell to hide the tats, and if she changed her manner of dress and didn't bring weapons, there is no hiding the clear not-City Elfness like it's in the way she stands tall and has a warrior's stance and body and wouldn't show fear of or deference to humans, realistically speaking there would be no mistaking her for a City Elf servant or something. She also lacks subtlety and humility, so wouldn't be able to maintain the act.

ayy the straight talking approach worked for Iron Bull, why not Gryff?

Since all the PC choices are plausibly present at the Conclave, I headcanon they are all there. So Nirwen travels with her clan's First, Tae, who is also her sister's intended. Poor guy....and sister.

Yeah, one of my friends is possibly some degree of ace and that was a big factor in her recent breakup. But the communication is really, really important. It's possible he really did just get very afraid of telling you, but this is also something that should've been discussed much more in advance since it impacts you both. Even if you're understanding and okay with that, it's still not fair to you to find out like that.

I hope things are okay for you.

My headcanon is a bit similar to both of these. I imagine my girls' parents were city elves who sought out the Dalish when she started showing signs of magic at an early age. However, someone in the alienage tipped off the Templars as they left and they slew her father as they escaped. Her father's death left her mother very bitter and angry (imagine post-rape Shianni, but with Velanna's temper), but my girl still had the city elf accent and was raised with some city elf values, and was much more gentle and diplomatic than her mother, so she often accompanied the Keeper in talking and negotiating with humans.

Plus, she also had less bold vallaslin (silver-white like her hair, with Mythal's design), so between her accent and her gentle demeanor and her experience negotiating with humans, she was considered the best pick for the Conclave.

She's 23 at the beginning of DA:I.  Honestly, her two older cousins were more suited in terms of experience and badassery.  But Mahanon was already married and helping Clan Sabrae recover, and Ellana would sooner light herself on fire than go undercover among the shems :P

I wondered about formal Dalish courtship after learning about your Lavellan's backstory.  We only see snippets of it back in DA:O, and I never thought about it before.  It would make sense that they value children; their birth rate doesn't seem to be particularly high and only pairing off with other elves produces elven children.  Clan Lavellan seems chill enough, so I don't think they'd set rules to marry and have kids, but more of a quiet societal pressure?

Clariel's young enough where I don't think she would have had many serious suitors, but she was probably starting to get some intimations.  Then she went off and picked the Dread Wolf, so that was great

I always imagined that my Lavellan was sent because being FIrst probably meant more experience in being diplomatic( at least as diplomatic as a Dalish can be) from dealing with other clans and possibly humans in the past.

And I always imagined her sitting hidden up in trees just watching all the humans for days bored until she notices Cory and his little party strolling around some back entrance or something.

And then she decided to go see what they were up to.

Same.  My Lavellan saw Grey Wardens at the Conclave, followed, and immediately regretted her life choices.

Though I think my favorite explanation was my bestie's.  She said her quizzy needed her mid-afternoon caffeine fix. She was literally stumbling around looking for a pot of tea when she interrupted the ritual :P

By start of DAI Sophia was 28 and had seen more alienages than aravels in the last 10 years. Deshanna figured out she needed someone to spy on the humans as soon as the Free Marches started filling up with refugees from the Blight, and also needed to give the blood-magic dabbling Tevinter child the Merrill treatment and basically kicked her out, but in a useful way, without casting her out completely.

Not so much.  My bestie's Trevelyan is rather like Celene in her workaholic caffeine addiction.  Solas automatically disapproves!

Although I think he would appreciate the irony of the situation.  The hand of the Maker at work, misplacing cups of tea :P

Yes, I actually kind of touched on my version of it in a Dorian/Nirwen friendship fic I wrote. Takes place after his personal quest and she talks about having been in a same-sex relationship and how the difference in treatment was very subtle, but present. Like a sense of 'wasted resources' even as her parents treated Nehn like their third daughter. It helps bring her and Dorian closer together.

Patrick Weekes actually commented on this when someone asked if there were terms for elves attracted to the same sex (no) and a followup addressed the Dalish wouldn't approve of not making babies but same sex relationships would just kind of be a thing that happens. So not overt homophobia or anything, but the duty to make babies issue, yes. I was happy that matched what I had already written/come up with.

As for formal courtship, it's really more or less a thing I think for heterosexual couples because culture.  I think with same sex couples you just...are. But you can do something on your own.

Clariel's young enough where I don't think she would have had many serious suitors, but she was probably starting to get some intimations.  Then she went off and picked the Dread Wolf, so that was great

Oh, this is going to be a fun topic when she gets back. I think she's going to Nehn first. Maybe. I don't have a true plan yet.
