I just realized something when talking with a friend in a private discussion. If we're gonna make comparisons of Solas to other things, we gotta talk about Solas, the dread wolf and Fenris, or Fenrir the Wolf responsible for Ragnarok in Norse mythology.

Especially since Solas wants to end the world, AND he takes our arm, though of course by different circumstances. Fenris does this in a much different way to Tyr...

Not. A. Fan. of the stubble though.

And hopefully appearance is the only similarity Solas has with Lucien ! I like him, but wouldn't wanna ship him. Hmm I might add him to my list of things to draw, he's cool.

Shame that they didn't wait a little longer. It probably took place before DAI could shake the very pillars of Dalish culture.

The next one, though? That's gonna be interesting.

I hope to god we get to be present at that in some form or another.

I want to see all my surviving dalish characters. I want to see Merrill finally getting recognition for her efforts to restore the eluvian, however late it is. I want to see Velanna with her notebook full of stories and scraps of dalish history geeking over the idea of the Vir Dirthara, the shattered library. I want to see everyone freaking out and arguing all over these revelations.

It's gonna be sooo good.

I was just about to say I hope to god we get an 'emergency' arlathvhen or some **** cause so many elves look like they're gonna be hit with the stupid moron stick that BW loves to hit them with lmfao I'm so worried we'll have to kill them in droves in da4
like the slaughter of 3 whole clans is not enough wahahaha

we get it biower the elves are morons loads of people in the fandom hate them and everyone in thedas hates them its cool

(i love u bioware i am not angry  :P )

I think how much I like DA4 will be predicated on how many elves I'm forced to kill, tbh.

And an emergency Arlathvhen would be a sight to see. The Dalish indignation would be hilarious.
And I want to see lovely Merrill.. with her eluvian ;).

I really hope Merrill comes back. I feel like the events of DA:I, and particularly Trespasser, make her attempt to restore a single eluvian seem kind of... quaint. I remember feeling somewhat peeved that Morrigan - who seems to have an immunity from all those risks mages ordinarily face - managed to arrive with a whole eluvian, just like that, no effort, no sacrifice, whilst Merrill slaved over her own for the entirety of DA2 with limited results. Like, do the dalish have to be incompetent and terrible and ignorant with regards to absolutely everything? Can't they just do one thing right? Why is it this shemlen witch can unlock elven secrets when elves themselves are deemed incapable of it? It frustrates me to no end.

I want her to receive recognition for her work. I want her work to become a valuable plot point of DA4. I want her work to be more than a simple fable about the dangers of blood magic.

I'm risking sounding like a total idiot, but who is Milton? (What is a Milton?)
I know the story of Adam and Eve from the bible, and while for me Eve is named Havah, I don't know any... other... differences?

It's no problem! Milton is a 17th century English radical poet who is best known for Paradise Lost, a long work of poetry describing the Fall of Adam and Eve. He has quite a sympathetic depiction of Lucifer, who could be interpreted as a tragic anti-hero who stood up to a rather tyrannical God.

It's seen as a classic by english lit buffs, but he's the sort of writer you hear of but actually never read. I had to read it in spring - I managed to scrape by through only reading the first chapter. Only work of literature I skipped over on over the course of my undergraduate degree. Not my thing, really.

Interesting...My Norse mythology is soooo rusty. Time to pull out the old dogeared Prose Edda. Thanks.

Soo someone made this Solas face mod and I'm not sure what to think, I kind of like it.. What do you guys think?

Spoiler

[source]

He looks like Lucien Lachance with a hood haha. By Sithis.

He looks like an awesome companion that I would love to have in DA4, but this is not Solas XD

Part of me really like how badass Solas doesn't look. Solas with dreadlocks can look nice (if he looks like that beautiful art piece) but if Solas would've looked like that in default I would've been suspicious, he doesn't look like he has endless wisdom, he looks like he has endless experience on the battlefield instead :P

Edit: he even has scruff!

It's like how people think Solas should've looked now that we know he is the Dread Wolf and we know his plan.

This is a good parallel, imo.

Also I recently told a freind, with the choice we have to face regarding saving or fighting him, we are basically the Thor to his Loki. (Talking MCU, here)

Oh yeah I was thinking about this one the other night! Fenrir and Tyr. There was also a codex entry in Tresspasser about the Elven gods encircling a wolf, reminded me of the binding of Fenrir scene.

Solas has a ton of interesting influences I think.

That's the one I posted about a few days ago.

I'm still annoyed/amused that now he's interesting he must be made to look 'hot'.

So no, I don't like it. An interesting looking man, but he's not Solas.

Didn't someone look really closely at Solas' normal face texture and figure out he has stubble? Very faint, very closely shaved ginger stubble?

Or am I imagining things?

I believe Thedas elves canonically can grow facial hair. The guy in Redemption may or may not be canon, but Solas does reference facial hair in a banter. Though it may be a rare trait, like hornless qunari.

I recall one of the devs said the choice to help Merrill restore her eluvian would be a very bad thing. So hopefully that means she's on her way into the next story! She'll be so nice to see in the new graphics.. someone did this render of her which I really like:

That reminds me of Loki taunting Tyr, saying that Tyr could only rile up mortals and get them to war with one another, but never reconcile them. Tyr in this sense sounds like a very good representation of the Inquisitor then, doesn't he?

Considering the outcome of everything we do, and our attempts to help.

Elven facial hair is completely non-canon.  That banter was written by Blackwall's writer and recorded, then Gaider pointed out it was lore breaking (like you, she'd thought that it was possible but rare).  Like the demon!Cole banter and Cullen's m!Inquisitor dialogue it's still in the files, but it's not canon.

I feel you. I love the understated look the devs went with eventually. Couldn't imagine Solas as anyone else. Most of the modded appearances take away from the really ordinary side of him - the part which has flaws and defects and misjudgements like any other mortal human being.

Do you have a link to the source?  I don't have mine handy and something that good should be credited.

It's partly because he doesn't look like Solas and partly because it feels like 'hot' mods like this are a way of people to justify liking him.  It gives me a similar but lesser feeling of ickiness as the white Isabela mod.

(ironically it also makes him look more generic because the bad boy dangerous wolf is far more of a cliché.  I am totally using this look for my bad boy mage pirate Solas/Halla Princess Lavellan Cass-authored friendfic).

I know guys, it's just not him is it? It's a Fen'Harel mod.

I'm just partial to dark features, don't mind me :P.

His skin does look rough where there would be stubble in some high rendered images.. Hmm .

Given as Solas seems to dislike being Fen'Harel this is kind of avoiding the point of his character.  He's not that kind of wolf.

Does this mean we'll get to see villain!Merrill? Agent of Fen'Harel Merrill? Honestly, I'd kind of love that.

I mean, don't care about what the devs say, I'm going to help her rebuild that eluvian and recapture lost elven glory, 100% Merrill defense squad here, screw the haters.

Also that render looks incredible aaaaahhhh I want her back as a companion.

Yes, I was also thinking of maybe Falon'din, the way Solas criticizes him for being so blood thirsty and starting wars. I think that he expects the Quizzy to be just like that, at least at first.

Fenrir is ultimately killed by a son of Odin, I believe, who I think is supposed to personify vengeance/Justice. Quizzy definately has cause for vengeance now lol.

I remember that party banter, I was amused!

  • Blackwall: I just realized, I've never seen an elf with a beard.
  • Solas: You haven't seen many elves then.

demon!Cole?

The only reason the beard banter got heard was because fans dug around in files, but thanks to the banter bug people just assumed that it was one that never got heard.

Demon!Cole is from the original version of Subject to His Will where the choice was human or demon (or maybe from a subverted take a third option choice.  But according the Weekes the original quest was much more black and white than the game's quest).  Cole and Blackwall have banter after Cole kills the Templar and it's terrifying.
