Oh I'm sure, I just don't know any :P Feel free to share, I'm guessing I don't watch the same things you lot do, which shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Sharon Stone's character from Basic Instinct is a good mainstream example. If you've seen Star Trek, the mirror universe exploits the trope a lot too. Particularly alternate-Kira.

If Solas was bi, he wouldn't exactly fit the trope. Most depraved bisexuals use their bisexuality as a means of exerting power. Anyone is a target for their lust. But it would definitely be a bit close to home to people who are aware of the trope and looking for better representation.

Sooo um

I'm pretty sure all the ancient elves were rendered mortal through the veil, and only uthenera is keeping them alive. Apparently other people are thinking differently so I just wanna know if this has ever been clarified

Not clear, but it's entirely possible they can't wake up from uthenera now once they enter it, which basically makes it a death sentence.

I haven't seen the former, but I saw Star Trek some, not a fan.

Anyway, tropes are unavoidable because there's so many. I personally wouldn't design characters with the intent of avoiding tropes unless they were especially horrendous ones. Judging from the skullfucking thing, I'd say this is one of those, lol. I don't know why there's a connection between bisexuals and cold blooded killers, but k, lol.

Well, the tropes page listed is as good a place to start as any. http://tvtropes.org/...epravedBisexual. As Mims says, it's not an exact matchup but it's close enough that it would've been picked up on.

I don't know if it has ever been clarified......but I do think ancient elves have been rendered mortal. Maybe not as mortal as modern elves if that makes sense. Like, maybe they live longer, but here is why I think that.

If you remember back at the Temple of Mythal, after you make an alliance with Abelas you are escorted by a female sentinel. I don't know if this was done on purpose...but she sort of...hobble as she walks with her staff. Like an old person would. No offense to the elderly. She is also carrying a large book and I actually wondered if maybe she is an elf that stays awake more than the other sentinels to take care of the ones who are in uthenera or the stasis Abelas mentions.

On another sad and unrelated note about uthenera is a codex entry from the that area that seems to be written by Abelas.

"We are trapped. The ones born here do not understand the keenness of what we have lost, or why so many of their elders weep as they enter uthenera. The new ones are faithful to Mythal, but do not understand what she was in her fullness. Without the wise to lead them, they will lose what they should have been.

I will teach them. They must serve. We must prepare for those who cast Mythal down. I shed my name the day I began her service. I shed my new one again, now that she rests. I will only be known by the sorrow that cuts my heart."

I have been wondering why ancient elves would cry about going into uthenera and I think it may be because before the Veil uthenera was probably a state where an elf could return to spirit form and roam the world as a spirit freely. After the Veil, it just meant going into the Fade that Solas created which.....probably not as fun.

Thinking about uthenera always gets depressing for me.

I'm gonna go back to finishing a cute little Solas and Lavellan pre-relationship thingy to cheer myself up now.

That's what I've been wondering.. Is Solas now mortal? I guessed the same as you for uthenera "stopping" their aging for the duration.

ooook here I go

I'm going to try and take a not so hideous picture of myself to use as profile pic, but if that won't work I'll just use Lavellan.

Ugh social media. The things I do for Solas.

Looked on the list, haven't seen most of these. Only examples I got that I've seen are herald and kumar go to white castle.... Silence of the Lambs which they claim might not be a real example, and Van Helsing with those corny ass vampires, two of which really aren't to be taken seriously. But, examples none the less I suppose. Not much though. Then again, there's like, not many serious bisexual characters shown in the first place.

I don't know why there's a connection between bisexuals and cold blooded killers, but k, lol.

I would assume it started as a way for writers to introduce gay themes without actually having to endorse homosexuality. The same sex attraction is portrayed as a symptom of a character's evil. For male characters it is usually used to shock. For female characters, its usually used to titillate the presumed male audience.

Sometimes an author does support gay themes, but sees people as being either 'gay' or 'straight'. Anyone who is in the middle is someone who can't be trusted, because they are using their sexuality for their own gain or selfish pleasure. So again, they must be a villain.

Both are wrong, obviously! But I assume that's the origin of the trope.

Back to the name of the trope it's adding an element of perceived 'depravity' or 'deviance' that apparently adds to someone's evil quotient. But as said, it's also often tied to someone exploting others and making power plays. And other harmful bi stereotypes influence this, like promiscuity, hypersexual behavior, etc.

But even more positive portrayals of bisexuality can miss the mark too, if they even manage to avoid dipping into erasure.

Yep! Which is why I don't think Solas would technically count as a 'depraved bisexual' had he been bi. Solas's romance path is ultimately tied to the 'good' part of him, not the villain side.

But I can absolutely see why they would err on the side of caution too.

Ahem.

More silliness in remembering the better days of Solavellan headcanon here.

You know, it's weird to write about the time when everything was good and cute. It like sitting and watching my poor character walking towards a cliff. I could tell her now to stop, but it's too late.

*sigh*

Agreed. I think some people would've drawn the line anyway but there are a LOT of people with very negative views of Solas and that would've been a likely factor.

Canada doesn't recognize time really. It seems that here, there is only one real thing that distinguishes change.

It's summer......or f*ck it's cold.
