Used to be able to access all abilities on console in the past games as well, through the radial menu. That option is gone now. Seeing as how I like to play mages, I've been upset about this for a while... Looks like there's being more noise made about it now that PC players are in the same basket. Eight abilities on hand is more than enough for warriors and rogues, but not mages.

Looks like we just get eight slots like everyone else.
Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw 3s
PC question 1: 8 Ability slots? A: Yes, per character. Changeable between combat.
I'm thinking that this and taking away healing are two things that are going to end up criticized when it's all said and done. They don't add difficulty, they add tedium.
Hm that's kind of underwhelming really, normally I'd say that there would be mods to extend it soon enough after the game comes out, but now with the frostbite engine, not sure if that's ever going to happen...

Wait... confused. We can only have 8 total? Or we can only use 8 per fight and switch our selected 8 after/before fights?
I'm sorry if I sound like a nimrod, but like I said "confused".
We can have 8 mapped to the quickbar and those can be changed for other abilities between fights.

Thank you >.<
It's a bummer that we're limited like this but at least it's not like the console version were it was 6.
Definitely understand the frustration though.

Like, wow, what does that say about combat? You have to gimp your players to make it seem challenging?? S***. Horrible flashbacks to DA2 wherein playing on Nightmare means you just got spammed with instant-kill moves OVER AND OVER AND OVER (looking at you, Arcane Horror and bloog mages) instead of any actual strategy requirement.
And speaking of mages, what the hell are we supposed to do with this? Eight spells. I mean... what? Warriors will be fine, rogues will be okay, but mages? Nope. Screwed. Awesome! Fantastic!
I think I'd like to take this time to thank marketing, for always telling me "OVER 200 ABILITIES" but leaving out the very important fact that I only have eight of them unless I want to micromanage my hotbar. WHICH I DON'T. AT ALL. Wow, thank you so much! That's so great!
Lol, I'm already ready to start criticizing and I don't even have the game. Hype -50,000 tbh. Now I'm back to expecting it to be just like DA2. Fab.
but i'm in a really toxic mood. i guess being verbally assaulted by family members will do that, huh? i should probably stop now before i start to be poisonous. i'm sorry.

I don't know how to feel about this. I mean, sure, less skills on the quickbar means you've got to be more tactical in your choice of spells/abilities. But on the other, you're limited to 8, and so you don't really have a lot to choose from, and so you can't really screw around as much

We weren't limited on the console versions either. On PS3 (and I assume the other consoles) we had full access to abilities through the radial menu. In DA:I there's no ability menu in the radial anymore, so we're stuck at eight hotkeys like the PC players.

I'm with you on how frustrating this is going to be. It looks like we're going to have to know going into a fight which abilities we need. So either metagaming or dying and restarting. Which just wastes player time rather than making things genuinely harder.
I'm sorry things are bad for you. You don't have to be sorry though.

I remember the devs saying that the spells branch would be much more complete (for instance, they separated cold and fire, and each one has it's own skill tree) so you can only truly master a fewer number of different spells.
As a consequence, maybe having only 8 abilities mapped would be less a hindrance than for previous games.
Anyway, this is a bit off topic for the Solas thread.

...maybe is because I've always played DA on console, but to me eight abilities "ready to use" seems more than enought. Even playng on PC, I use those slots only for attack abilities, or at the very least for regenerative ones.
and those "long effect" I usually use "manually" from the menu during the pause.
there is just to be more tactical and prevident in what you really need. like Resident evil's inventory. (maybe this is the motive I don't blink an eye with limited slots...)

You know, it's times like these that I'm glad I really suck at combat and tactics so the loss of key slots doesn't faze me. I tend to only use about three or four main abilities anyway (yes even as a mage) and play on the easiest setting possible. And even then, console commands on PC made it more fun for me. That said, I am sorry for those of you who were hoping for more.
Edit - and I am really sorry for those having a bad day. Toxic family members are not fun. Just remember that it is not a reflection of you, but of them. You are sweet and amazing and lovely and generous and enthusiastic and you matter!

@manabloom - I definitely get your frustration. As a console player, I'm used to being gimped with the tactics but now everybody is and it sucks. The lack of abilities in the radial menu is really the killer here for everybody, honestly.
I know that it's supposed to make it more "challenging", but it's just going to get annoying to have to switch out all of my abilities between fights if I want to use them. Especially when you don't know what's coming!

I love having all the talents/spells available through the control bar or Radial Menu, so I admit...wasn't thrilled to see this.
HOWEVER!
I am an avid Dragon's Dogma player, and they have a similar type of set up (even more restrictive, actually). Three to six talent/spells allowed for use, while in combat. Then to change them, you most go back to a resting spot/Inn, and access the appropriate NPC. This does require a sense of strategy. Won't lie though, it can be frustrating at times (especially since there are a few vocations that have a bunch of different abilities I like....makes it hard to choose :/ ).
I will try and reserve judgement, till I play the game.

The dev team agrees with you:

Ability count clarity: DAI is about roles, planning ahead and making tactical decisions. Potions, ability choice, gear, party composition.
I prefer adaptability, personally. We'll have to see how it plays, I suppose. It may not be such a big deal once we have our hands on the game but it looks frustrating right now.
