So Solas basically just cast a Barrier around the world.

I think so, yeah.  The ultimate Knight-Enchanter barrier. Problem is Solas is a Rift Mage so it'll break down eventually. lol

... You know I just got how funny that spec title for him is. Cus he's gonna tear down the veil, basically causing the biggest rift of all time. I'm slow.

yeaaa yesterday I pulled up someone who intentionally repeatedly misgendered krem with some stupid justification about his voice and it's like lmao why this why you. no need to be some kind of SJW paladin joining a trans pride parade, but intentionally repeatedly mis-pronouning a trans character with bs justification when you've been politely informed that's not nice because trans people read these boards is just. no. do people not know what basic respect is or what

 phrasing.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of people out there who don't even consider that this is basic respect. And when we're talking about real people, every trans/NB person I know understands pronouns may take some people some time/effort but are fine if they're genuinely trying and make a mistake. But too many just want to deny others that dignity/their identity. I totally ignored my 'nope' instinct in that thread that got pulled yesterday but seeing Krem repeatedly misgendered.

Or when people are like "She's confident and empowered, that's why she chose to dress that way!" as if she were a real person capable of making independent choices and not a character created and designed by a bunch of dudes in an office... that's a good one.

This is so overused as an excuse by those specific folks who try to ignore all reasonable criticism. And like I said about the writing issue, having greater diversity does help. I mean, I like Isabela, but it's not like the criticism came from nowhere.

Her DAIMP armors do have pants after the first tier. ^_^

Now that I've caught up I was pondering something this morning.

I've been thinking more and more that most of the characters in some way help us to flesh out/mirror/grow our impressions of Solas.  The one I really got to thinking about was Iron Bull.  Iron Bull is super dedicated to the Qun in the beginning of his life even though he's never felt like he fits.  He loses a friend to that devotion and has to be reeducated.  When he meets Krem it's with that background and he gets attached too.  Ultimately we get to help him seperate himself from that deovtion or stay.

With Solas I think we might be his Krem.  Any inquisitor(not just romanced) and he's trying to decide if he sticks with what's good for a larger whole or something that's good for him(us).  He hasn't reached a critical state yet like Bull did in Krem vs. Qun. When that time comes will our influence up to that point help him make the decision.  Solas vs the Dread Wolf (aka the greater good).

Well Solas gave us some sort of a deadline in Trespasser and I think it is because he has his own deadline to deal with. Either he brings the Veil down or something/someone else breaks it for him.

Ohhhhhhhhh interesting parallel. And you're right, everyone does help shape our understanding of Solas. Dorian as someone who wants to make their homeland better. Sera with her Red Jennies and refusal to militarize it. Blackwall with his soldier past and redemption arc. Vivienne with her power plays. Varric with his contentment and easy-going attitude. Cole as a person caught between two worlds. Cassandra with her issues on faith and dedication to duty.

Such disparate characters, and yet so many parallels.

*sigh* I love this game.

Just coming in to this thread to say that if I met Solas in real life I would not get on with him.

From a player perspective though I can't help but find him deeply interesting and he is being set up to be a fantastic antagonist with lots of thought behind him. This is the kind of villain I like - one that has a story you can relate to and understand why he is doing the things he is doing. An antagonist that isn't just "I do bad things because I'm the big bad and I have big bad reasons" type. He is a villain that isn't a villain at all, one that can't easily fit in the good or evil categories.

On neither of my two play through did I romance him, but If I had I could only see the story developing being even MORE gripping!

I lurked on a few pages of this thread and wow, I'm so sorry people are being so awful to you Solas fans! Like what is so absurd about liking well written characters?!

Anyway, I'll continue to lurk here XD

I was feeling a bit down about the results of the DA4 protagonist poll. But then I thought that 43-45% of people who want either Inquisitor or dual protagonist is still a pretty large percentage of the fan-base. Some people have said that BSNers tend to be negative so it might not be representative of the fan-base, but I also put this post up on reddit. I am not sure where else I can post the poll for a more representative sample. I am wondering if the the ratio of core story (only 20ish hours) to open world exploration may have affected a lot of players' attachment to the Inquisitor or Solas. Hopefully, the next game has a better core story vs open world balance.

Neither would I, this relationship would be an IRL disaster.

To me the game and his romance have given me the chance to experience what it would be like to be in love/friendship with a person who appears as a villain to most and to history. How you can see the side of him that deserves love and deserves to be saved. 99.9% of us have that side, so I feel it was truly an experience I learned from. Not many works of fiction have enriched my life like this.

Tumblr perhaps?

Yeah, the main game took me at least 100 hours the first try, and most of it was just walking around in dead silence because of the banter bug. It was exhausting . And I'm still bitter about how little we got to see of Val Royeaux. Maybe they could have fewer areas next time? Just a few main places, and then a spattering of smaller places that we only go to for quests, I dunno. I'm looking forward to strolling about a much more detailed and interactive Minrathous, at the very least.

I am currently making a new Solavellan video but in meantime (since it takes long time and I want to take some small breaks as well) I had an idea of a meme... Tell me what you guys think.. I could do it for you if you want to XD (yes even though I do not post too much art I am an artist as well) so I have this picture in my head with different companions like first you have a party members Dorian + Iron Bull + Solas
and Iron Bull like slaps Dorians nice butt (because romance) and says something dirty and Dorian is just blushing like: '' O////Ò '' and then he says something back to him
and then Lavellan is like: - Checks Dorian and Bull out - <.< .....
then another scene (you get to know later on that Blackwall or Thom has a crush on Josephine) where he gives some flowers to her
Lavellan: - Looks at Thom & Josie - <.<  .......
Lavellan: - Turns to look at Solas - >.>

Solas: I SENSE SOME ELVEN MAGIC NEARBY! - Points finger up with serious face on -
Lavellan: - with this face ----> tumblr_inline_nuk3zrSGLq1tqpcl2_500.gif -   WHY YOU NO LOVE ME SOLAS! (romanced Lavellan but said this because they never really talk about their relationship too much or show it to others XD)

I have to say that I would have gotten along with Solas. Blame being open-minded, empathetic, and able to get along with many different types of people. I wouldn't have balked at his early conversations and I wouldn't be afraid to chide him for some of his more ignorant statements. It would've been fascinating to talk to him. When something is rude or mean-spirited, I kind of have to call it out. And a lot of the thing he values (and sometimes demonstrates) are things I value. Though now we know more about what and why, but I don't think those were wrong, he can twist them to make what he wants to do a bit better in his mind.

Still, yes, definitely.

Fandom often has the following distorted ideas about liking characters:
1) The characters you like reflect your moral worth as a person
2) Popular characters will always get more attention from the writers/devs than unpopular ones
3) Liking particular characters means you MUST dislike others on principle

These ideas combine to form a fair amount of Internet Stupid ™. It's not unique to Dragon Age; this stuff was present in the Harry Potter fandom too. And there's so much of it in the Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra fandom that I never even dipped a toe inside, despite loving that universe
