I'm never able to straight-up antagonize BioWare companions (except DA2's cast, who need a good kick in the behind). But playing a PC who sometimes butts heads with Solas has been very interesting.
I would certainly find Solas attractive IRL, but I think I'd have a hard time dealing with him in any meaningful interaction. We'd wind up more like casual friends or acquaintances, basically his relationship with most of the people in the Inquisition. He has a lot of qualities that make him a fascinating fictional character, but those don't translate well into real life.
1. Yeah - for whatever reason I have trouble being mean to BW characters. Mostly because they do kicked puppy looks half the time you do. Obsidian and Bethesda. NO PROBLEM. I will murder everybody in those games.
2. Solas would be initially attractive to me but then after prolonged period of time with him, I likely would find him pretty insufferable. So yeah friends. He reminds me of a close friend I had in college. Initially very charming, attractive, very intelligent but after a while it was like 'stfu you're being a douche'. Also he didn't have the apocalypse thing going for him so you know...turn off.

Oh god the kicked puppy looks. Guilt-based gaming at its finest. Though the friendship/rivalry system in DA2 meant that I could give the NPCs a piece of my mind without being a huge jerk, and I took full advantage of that. I still kind of miss that system. I think across my two playthroughs, I rivaled Merrill, Carver, Anders, Fenris, and Seb. And I honestly felt like they were all better off for a little tough love
I dunno. He was still pretty mean. That's a turn on.
LOL. Apparently the traits I can't stand IRL (grumpy, standoffish, elitist) translate into hot elven men in-game?

I am forever sad that Solas is not a rival-mance. The yelly options are my favorite with him especially in the DLC.
"I HATE YOU, YOUR FACE, AND YOUR RACE" - insta-swoon. But I guess Solas did that too. Mebbe I can get both.
Did you play the DLC?? Dunno if you noticed, they did a bit of work to Solas' face so he looked might fine.
Socking Abelas in his pouty face is the first desire of my Lavellan. It would be second if she knew about Michel, because she'd sock him first.
"You're not my people!"
Lavellan: "Thank ****ing goodness for that, you rectum-faced pygmy."
Serious love to those who adore Abelas, by the way. I got it with Ameridan, so you guys just keep on rocking the ancient elf feels. My Lavellan just has... opinions.
And I thought that was just my imagination with the face job. I swear my characters looked prettier too. For as much as I make them pretty, anyway. But the faces were... better animated? More seamless, smoother? Something.

I figured it had something to do with dropping last-gen. I noticed in Descent too that all of Valta and Renn's animations were really seamless.
Off topic of Solas taking Abelas' thighs but was talked about a few pages ago. Last night (don't ask why just popped in there, thanks brain...) but I was thinking of how they could resolve DA:I LI's in DA4 if Inquisitor was to be the main character. So say players did not want to keep their romance for DA4 (so they can have the lovely new eye candy....) but do not want to forget the past relationship. Got me to thinking....what if after CC you are given a choice to keep romance choice but want a fresh start? Click yes and codex entry of how your LI left you or died. (IB gets killed during charger run protecting Krem, Blackwall already dies from being a Warden...Sera gets into too deep on a mission and is imprisoned or killed, Cullen dies early from having been an addict for so long-addicts have been known to have shortened lives even if they kick it, stuff just crops up- etc. for companions. Not sure about the romance with Cass since I never romanced her but it could be a breakup of duty/time apart type thing) and then a blanket statement from NPC about "I'm sorry about _____. You deserve happiness and if there is anything you wish to talk about let me know." simple sentence that can be used for a breakup or death. Plus since it was the player who made the choice then cant be mad at BW can you?
How are we this fine [whatever time zone you are in]?
A few pages back people were talking about Isabela and her dress sooo I feel obligated to comment back. I'm putting it under spoilers for off topicness though!
Spoiler
That's a very very good point. Many people just didn't take the time to get to know Solas due to being put off by him. I initially didn't get to know Isabella in DA2 as her outfit really pushed my buttons. Eventually, I made the effort and liked her a lot for the most part despite her stupid outfit.
Isabela was another one I took time to appreciate, partially because I wanted to avoid putting her and Fenris in the same team to avoid... specific banters, but it was mostly down to her ridiculous getup. Okay, lady, I get it! You're a slinky sexy pirate! Just put some damn pants on! And Bethany, button up your dress! If I can't be scantly clad, no one can!
Praise be to modders. xD
Yep, her outfit was just so cliched. I was really disappointed in BW. I get tired of hearing the whole justification that "She was written to be sex obsessed and her outfit reflects that!" I can't help but ask why was this character trait so important to put in yet another game? It's been done to death. It's not original and BW didn't put a unique twist on it. She was primarily there as eye candy and I was really put off by that. It took me awhile to get to know her due to how she was designed.
Or when people are like "She's confident and empowered, that's why she chose to dress that way!" as if she were a real person capable of making independent choices and not a character created and designed by a bunch of dudes in an office... that's a good one.
I also had a hard time liking Isabela in my first playthrough, but it was never because of her outfit. I had Varric as my rogue and whenever I did take her out she just seemed to disagree with everything I did and I couldn't get a feel for her character. "Gives Orana some money" Isabela gives me her ire, "helps some mages" Isabela approves... what the heck Isabela!? It also didn't help that she left me in Act 2 Of course my second playthrough was completely different because I took the time to know her, and after that I really liked her. It's because of this that I'll passionately defend her dress choices!
The sex-crazed pirate queen is definitely an overdone character trope. Isabela is fleshed out more than just a simple caricature, but she is obviously heavily influenced by "sexy pirate queen". She's crude, sexual, greedy, selfish and completely non-apologetic for the person she is. She likes to be the center of attention and she likes the image she is giving off with her outfit and her attitude.
She is confident and empowered (or at least that's what she wants everyone that looks at her to think). Isabela wants all eyes on her, she wants people to want her. I understand her outfit might not be the most battle ready (part of me imagines that Isabela hopes for it to fall off of her in the heat of battle), but Isabela isn't a warrior either. She isn't a mercenary, or a bandit, or a soldier. She's a thief, and a pirate, and a friend who goes out and helps Hawke when she needs it. Honestly, the part I found most unbelievable about her outfit was that is was white. How the fluff does she get the stains out of it?
I'm not going to say she isn't eye candy, because she most certainly is, but I think it does a disservice to her character and writers when you say that's what she primarily is. Isabela may want to be primarily eye candy, but is so much more than that when you take the chance to know her. The writers didn't add a surprising unique twist to the "sexy pirate queen trope" but they fleshed it out and made her a person beyond her personifications. She might be a fictional character written with certain ideas in mind, but her character is still alive with all the ideas and thoughts and mistakes that make her her. This isn't Merrill running around in nothing, but her weird elven under garments, this is Isabela. An attention wh0re who is sultry and obscene and callous, who deep down is a good person who cares for her friends and is afraid of being rejected.
I think it's safe to say that Isabela would really get a laugh about the fact that we're arguing over her indecent dress!
On a more Solas related note, Solas fans still have a hard time wrapping their heads around the fact that people can hate Solas. To put it in perspective,
Our Lavellans': Solas we'll never give up on you, we love you! Ar lath ma!
On the thread: Solas is so awesome, we love him so much, we'll change his mind about destroying the world, but we'll love him not matter what!
In real life,
*News people are surrounding you*
Newsperson 1: Is it true that you lived with Fen'Harel, known to you as Solas, for months and never knew his true identity?
Lavellan: Yes... well he was a bit suspicious but I didn't want to pressure him.
Newsperson 2: But now he's planning mass genocide! He's willing to harm innocent people for some crazy plan to bring back the heritage he lost!
Lavellan: Yes... well, I don't really agree with any of that per say.
Person in the crowd 1: He's a monster! A power hungry maniac who needs to be put down!
Lavellan: Oh no! You just don't understand him! He's really a good person!
*The crowd errupts in a frenzy of screaming and shoving to get closer*
Newsperson 2: Are you saying that even after knowing what he plans to do to the world you still think he's a good person!?
Lavellan: It's because I love him! SOLAS IF YOU'RE WATCHING THIS I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU! LOVE CONQUERS ALL!
*screams of outrage*
Person in the crowd 2: Dear God, how could you say such a thing!?
Person in the crowd 1: You're a monster too you crazy b****!!!
Newsperson 1: You heard it here folks. From disgruntled employees, to hapless lovers. Solas can inspire blinding loyalty in even the most clear cut circumstances!
Lavellan: It's not clear cut and I never said I was--
Police officer: Shut it! You're coming with us for further questioning!

I agree that the veil might be a gigantic "barrier" around the Fade. I started thinking about this mural again:
Spoiler
Ummm...What are the implications if those "cells" or chambers represent the Evanuris and their orbs??? What if the power/orbs of the Evanuris are the only thing "holding the veil in place" for all these years??? (Shudders)...I think I just scared myself....
And TOP:
(I wouldn't recommend clicking on this...My screenshots are humongous...I have a 4k monitor and am still trying to figure out this image posting thing...maybe I need to resize? Any advice appreciated!)

I think I'm the only one who thought their character looked a lot uglier in Trespasser. Her "jowls" looked more puffy and droopy. It's probably the base face I picked. I started with the really square-jawed face. Anyway, I have no good Trespasser screenshots as a result.
Yes to Solas rivalmance. I went out of my way to play it as close to one as possible, but an actual rivalmance would've been soo delicious.
Not for me. I'm not really fond of rivalmances. I had Solas at pretty much max approval for most of the game without trying to. Dislike path Solas is informative, but a total turnoff. I did an Anders friendmance too.

Still trucking on WoT2 but it is interesting to note this might be relevant?

For the romances in DA2, I did prefer friendship to rivalry. Especially in the case of Anders; as much as I love delicious digital drama, the anguish and mental instability in the rivalry romance cut way too close to home for me to enjoy it.
Ideally the relationships would have two values that they track: one for whether the character respects you, and one for whether they like you. As Tali points out in ME3, you can have immense respect for people you don't like. But I understand why that would be hard to implement, and the friendship/rivalry system leads to weird moments where the game assumes someone respects you when all you've done is act like a jerkface
