Perfect!!! :D

Watched Fullmetal Alchemist?

She's like Shou Tucker, but even worse.

Anyhow, more quotes:

"In 9:16 Dragon, a strange book was recovered during a University of Orlais expedition into an uncharted section of the Western Approach.

The book is written in an invented script by an unknown author, apparently on the subject of animal physiology."

"The author of this book, dubbed the 'Grim Anatomy' by its finders, dissects various creatures using unorthodox methods. The resulting diagrams illustrate in great detail how nugs, giants, wyverns, and others look on the inside.

Careful story is paid to the eyes of the nug. Based on the drawings and limited deciphering of the text, the author seems all but obsessed with understanding what animals see and how this might differ from own perception of reality."

"In later pages of the Grin Anatomy, the author tears a giant's eye straight from its socket. 'If the eye is the window through which it crawls, then where in the skull does it hide," they wonder. 'It' likely refers to a demon attempting to possess the beast."

"It is widely believed that the Grim Anatomy's focus is on demonic possession, specifically how a demon, itself a tangible being, can enter into the mind of another and manipulate it. Here, the author observes the motor skills of a possessed wyvern. 'It is not wearing the creature's skin,' the notes read. 'It has become the creature: its mind, its senses... its blood.'"

I thought about this very intensely a few months ago and headcanoned that that they have high levels of telomerase activity, but DNA repair mechanisms efficient enough to prevent these cells from becoming cancerous.
Then I read how elves don't work by genetics, cried a little inside, and formed a new theory.
It's the fade. It keeps their DNA clean and perfect.
In the case of mortal elves, I guess the fade connection is strong enough to keep their ears pointy, but not strong enough to polish their DNA (and other cell components)?
And the idea of fadeplasts as something to amplify fade's influence in the cell? Amazing.

I cried a little when I learned they don't work by genetics too. Shame.

But, now we can all headcanon it's just a different kind of genetics. fDNA FTW

Also let's add increased (but tightly regulated) telomerase activity to our growing theory of elven biology!

Now that I think about it, if they formed physical bodies at will, they could tweak those pathways so that everything stands at just the right balance between immortality and cancer. Especially if they are continuously connected to the fade, have awareness of what's going on in their cells and can make little changes if needed.

I haven't watched FMA, but I can imagine...

I think the author's (WOT) perception may be skewed a bit here. Unfortunately, if we substitute "The Blight" for the references to "demons" and "demon possession" the text seems to make more sense in the context of what we know!?! :crying:

The Western approach really is more than it seems, with codices of all sorts. I'm guessing Razikale is the one sleeping down there.

Not good? I don't think we're looking at the same art.  <3

I could definitely see that. There is that one cave with the relief carving of people worshipping Razikale. Not to mention the Abyssal Rift, which is... intense.

Sorry if I'm spamming this, but I just wanted to do one last call for votes for the weekenders. This is a poll about who you want as a protagonist for DA4.

@catfishers,

That was my reasoning.

Other things are interesting like: the 'Final steps before the abyss'  and spirit-bound statue landmark, the abandoned warden expedition to kill the archdemon, the golem codex, the gates of Toth and Andoral, the time magic ruins and astrarium of fenrir.

So, while we're on the topic, how does the science side of BSN explain shapeshifting magic?

I always found the idea of changing all of your organs, your circulatory, nervous, and digestive system, and maybe adding or losing a few extra limbs in the space of a few seconds as being... rather impossible. I reckon your brain would struggle to adapt to your body's new rhythms and probably give up.

Both clouds were supposed to be wolves, but now I can see that one looks like halla. My quizzie had Ghilan'nain's markings, so you just gave me an idea to add some horns there :D Thanks a lot!

As for Solas topic, recently it crossed my mind that perhaps the elven gods are responsible for the blight, and maybe Tevinter gods are the same as elven. Maybe there is a part of the history that keeps the players in the dark. We know that both elves and humans had a contact with each other before the first blight.

OK, that was a serious challenge, but...

Daddy Lavellan: Solas, I understand you're not originally Dalish. But if you respect the old ways and have serious intentions for my daughter, you should take vallaslin.

*Solas opens his mouth to speak but Lavellan elbows him in the ribs... discreetly*

Lavellan: He can't do that, dad.

Daddy Lavellan: Why not?

Lavellan: He loves all the Gods so much... He can't just pick one.

*Solas' face becomes slightly more red and he tries to speak again, but Lavellan squeezes his arm.*

Lavellan: He's worried that if he picks just one, it would look like he favors that one. And he loves them equally. All of them. So much.

Daddy Lavellan: Hmmmm.....

Lavellan: No, dad, I'm serious. In fact, he loves them all SO much, he has a plan... To free them!

Daddy Lavellan: What?!

Lavellan: He is working on a spell to free them from the Beyond.

*Solas is getting furious.*

Daddy Lavellan: Young man, what just happened with your eyes?

Solas: Young man?!

*Lavellan elbows him again.*

Lavellan: He... has cataract. Minor problem, really. Also, not genetic.

Daddy Lavellan: *sigh* Look, da'len, you don't need to lie to me and tell me ridiculous stories about freeing the Gods. I get it.

Lavellan: You do?

Daddy Lavellan: He's too wimpy to get vallaslin, isn't he?

Lavellan: Well... Yes. He's really sensitive. I think if he tries to get vallaslin he would cry. Howl, even.

*Solas humphs, resigned.*

Daddy Lavellan: Well, he's not perfect, but at this point, I'm glad you found at least an elf. But I expect at least three grandchildren.

Lavellan: Oh, we'll have many children. Enough to rebuild the whole empire.

Daddy Lavellan: Good enough for me. All right, I'm off to bed. Pleasure to meet you, Solas.

Solas: Live well while time remains.

Lavellan: He means good night.

OMG hahaha thank you so much! XD This was perfect.. someone needs to make meme out of it... I would but sadly I have no time right now when I have 1 drawing 2 videos that I am doing and a replay of DAI + studying math as a crazy person haha.. help me..

So, while we're on the topic, how does the science side of BSN explain shapeshifting magic?

I always found the idea of changing all of your organs, your circulatory, nervous, and digestive system, and maybe adding or losing a few extra limbs in the space of a few seconds as being... rather impossible. That's a tough one, but the shape shifting itself can easily be explained (pseudo)scientifically.

Changing shape completely already happens in nature with metamorphosis. My flies can completely change their body shape and all their organs in 2-3 days at 25 degrees C. To change into another animal, such as elf to wolf or to dragon or raven would be relatively easy since the genes that determine body plan and the basic metabolic pathways are very similar between different animals. Also what Morrigan says about how you need to study the animal you want to turn into fits with this - you need to be able to know exactly what changes to make.

Add you said, the key is time. Undergoing metamorphosis like that in seconds is just too much. But they can manipulate time through magic! Dorian's tree has this awesome ability to accelerate his time, so that everything else slows down in relation to him. You can cast the same spell when you shape-shift. If it takes you two weeks to change form, it could look like a second to the outside world.

Note that you don't have to change shape completely and you can keep must of your brain the same so that you don't end up with the IQ of a wolf as well after the transformation.

You will probably also want to shut down consciousness during this process because waiting two weeks for your body to change shape while everything around you seems frozen is probably super boring.

I really hope some physicists can chime in and extend our science of Thedas theory with some explanations: What is the Fade? What is the Veil?

Another thing I love about this place. Post a theory about science and genetics of elves and the Fade? Someone can craft an answer for it. Have a writing question or a moment of doubt? People can offer advice. Post a racy picture of oh-my proportions? Get people asking about the program, techniques, and requesting information on how to better their own skills.

Never stop, Solas thread. <3
