I agree that the death feels like an easy way out and may not accomplish anything - much less redemption. I mean, the Quizzies can choose (with disliked ones automatically making that choice) and vow to stop him by whatever means necessary; which may include killing him... and let's face it - it will likely mean killing him.

I mean, if the option to doom him likely means killing him, then what's the point of redemption option at all?

One may argue that it will depend how he's going to die, but given that the world is inevitably going to change or yet face the worst of its demons (Blight, Evanuris, rage of Titans, else), I think there's enough of an implication that he may be needed to push the scale on the 'right'/our side.... Of course, the question remains if Solas/Lavellan may stay alive at the very end of this franchise's current arc. Because if either or both of them don't die at the end of DA4, it may still be the final ending for them in DA5 or 6...

In any case - the more we're trying to guess how things are going to go in the next installment, the more I'm trying to remind myself that it's along way coming and too much speculation will simply complicate things.... Uh, I really need to find something else to occupy my mind with.

HA! That is a perfect example right there. I dont blame people for thinking solas is revolting. Think what you will, what he plans isnt pretty. But how many of those people that think he is a monster for wanting to save his people also completely wiped out the geth (tranquil non-people) so that they could get the shep breath scene at the end of the game? I know I did...even with legions sacrifice and how much danm feels that gave me. One of my fave characters. And how much I think that that unit does have a soul. And EDI...I am a monster too. Oh no...

Well, you'd still be a monster if you chose to tear down the Veil (synthesis) even though nobody dies.  You just decided for everyone ever that synthesis is the best thing for them.  You might be right.  The ending wants you to believe you're right.  But how can you ever be sure?  You just caused the entire galaxy to be brainwashed.

Or you could take over the throne in the Golden City (Control ending).  Then everything has to be done your way from then on, but you're also forever going to be isolated from everyone you love.  I mean, nobody else has to die, but... it sucks to be you...

You have a point.

But that point is all the more reason I think if you choose to redeem him, Solas and Lavellan both have to survive--because in this case, redemption would be trying to clean up the mess he's indirectly responsible for, having created the Veil in the first place and then even planned to take it back down (even though he chose not to).

Yes, I do want them both to survive...IMO, redemption in death is not a viable or valid outcome. I may have a difference in opinion in that I want the veil to come down, but gently(?), with as little collateral damage as possible...

I want my happy ending, DAMMIT!!! :D <3

Well considering the history of this thread, there's a good chance at least one or two of us in the thread, or at least on this board, have already come up with what's going to happen.  I normally enjoy speculation, but sometimes this thread gets a little nerve-wracked by it, I think.

I think we should all just read Lord the Rings fanfiction and obsess over other ancient elves that don't want to destroy anything.

Actually I do want, as a player, for the Veil to come down.  I sincerely believe it's going to, even if we stop Solas.  If he doesn't do it, someone else will--Well!Inquisitor, or Well!Morrigan, or Mythal-by-way-of-Morrigan, or even an ancient magister or other character we haven't met yet.  I would not even be surprised if it happened in the middle of the next game, rather than the end, so that we have time to react to it and go after the Big Bad.  But if that's the case, I am not sure what we'll be doing in DA5.  Guess that will become clear when we beat DA4 and possibly its epilogue (I love having an epilogue for once.  I hope they do it for all their future games.).

Another thing...

He's not some madman, giggling maniacally, no matter what the stories may say!!!

He never said "I want to kill you", "I want to kill everyone" or "I want to (OR am going to) destroy the world" nor does his "plan" imply any of these things!!!! <3

All of these things would be completely out of character for him, IMO, considering what we know about him throughout the game(s)...

I was looking through Dragon Age fan art and I found this! No Solas, but I thought I'd share with all of you anyways!

It made me wonder what superhero/antihero/villain Solas would be. In some earlier posts a few people compared him to Loki (although they definitely meant mythical Loki not Marvel Loki) because of his nature as a trickster, but after being fleshed out so much I find that he hardly compares to Loki at all. My mind definitely jumped to DCs Dr. Manhatten...

*Hopes some of you are interested enough in superheroes that I'm not just rambling on*

I'm back from being out all day and catching up on the thread, but it seems you've all been as quirky and wonderful as usual.

I may have passed part of the time during my 2hr trip to the wedding by pecking out pieces of that new story I mentioned being inspired with last night.

Well, today just keeps getting better and better. Can't say what just happened, but it's exciting and will help me support my lifestyle as an unwashed science hobo. It also means I might have a lot less time for the thread in about a few days :'( Just wanted to say how awesome everyone here is, and how you all are spirits of hope. I go for cheerful jokester as much as possible, but some days I just cry out of desperation and powerlessness at the absurdity that science can be these days, and then you guys make me laugh again and I'm crying as I Swype this, wtf is wrong with me. Anyway, thanks fellow gremlins, I love you.

:)

I guess I should bring this out again.

Weekes confirmed that it was an oversight, but not important to the overall story.  Solas was supposed to say something at the Well, but the dialogue's just not there.

Solas does tell you no if you ask him if you should. That's partly why my Lavellan didn't. Partly trust in Solas and partly unfinished duty that she couldn't risk being tied to some unknown force before it was complete.

Well....interestingly enough though.....

.....Solas' character on this point seems to be very different depending on who the Inquisitor was. I agree with you, with a friend or romance Inquisitor yes, Solas is not really a madman looking at his plan with a maniac grin on his face.

However, take a good look at the look on his face when he says "Doing so will most likely destroy your world" to an Inquisitor he hates. It is the same look and smile he has just before he turns to kill the mages who tortured the spirit of Wisdom. I'm afraid that that look is very maniac in appearance. Like "I'm going to enjoy this" look on his face.

I bet that look is what his legendary giggling is all about. Because it seems that if Solas is about to kill someone and he's enjoying it....well.....he really seems to enjoy it.

Sometimes I wish Solas didn't give Lavellan all the credit for making him see that the people of modern Thedas are people too. I mean, did he not hang out with the other companions?

I think it was more a, "I'm going to enjoy punishing you" look. He said in banter there is no glory or whatever in killing unless it's personal. So while he might not like the idea of harming others, if he believes he has just cause he's not shy about his feelings on the matter.

I disagree, but I have to admit, if the shoe were on the other foot, I wouldn't mind making the A$$quisitor squirm a bit! <3

Also, he does save Quizzy's life anyway, at the end..

I'm hoping that his interactions with the others helped to anchor him in some way even if they were dealing with an assquisitor. While it's great and nice to feel "speshul" as the PC in making all the big differences in the world, I'd much prefer little indications like that where we aren't the be-all, end-all of what goes on around us. We really shouldn't be.

Not to say a romanced Lavellan shouldn't have some bigger impact in some ways, even over a friend Inquisitor. I just don't want to see it become a syrupy "love saves all" kind of story for them.

I agree but in that particular instance with Wisdom it did not appear to me that he was contemplating killing those mages with any kind of glee.  Grim satisfaction perhaps but not smiling or smirking.  That's just not how the scene came across to me that is.

Well, it's not like ONLY romanced Lavellan is offered a chance to redeem him, so...

In any case - I've speculated about it long before Trespasser: I think that in case Quizzy failed to impress anyone, the story seems to groom either Cass or Varric as someone Solas may stop and listen to (even if the effect won't be as significant like in case we played our cards right).

He likes and respects them, no matter what he thinks of the Inquisitor and they're always there - neither will leave Inquisition until Cory is defeated and unlike others, they're there from the start.

My only worry about that is that it can take away from a close friendship you've formed with Solas. There are all different kinds of luuuuuuuvvv!

I like that idea!

I really love his relationship with Cassandra and Varric! Although I think Solas did do a pretty good job keeping anyone from getting too close to him (minus you and Cole), but I hope you're right!
