Murderous is such a complicated feeling!

CtHaU.gif

I think it's more of a conflicted 'smile through it all' kind of thing. The kind of smile that you put on when you shake your head because a situation is just so ridiculous that you can't even grasp the concept of it. Solas is absolutely devastated that these mages turned his friend into a demon. It's probably a mixture of anger and confusion that causes him to smile like that. And, as awful as it is to kill those mages who didn't know any better, if someone were to torture MY friend, then I sure as hell wouldn't invite them to a cup of tea either. Love that gif, though.

...

Um, Ghilan'nain created it?

Is it going to start killing people like the rabbit in Monty Python?

Here is the look I'm talking about. This is All New, Faded For Her. Pay attention at 5:16 in the video. He is smiling as he turns to deal with the mages. And not a cute "Is that a serious question?" smile.

Spoiler

Here is the low approval dialogue at the end of Trespasser. Watch at around 1:44. Solas has a very similar look to him as he talks about the possibility of this world ending.

Um, no - it's not the case of same expression - the expression you get with romanced/befriended Lavellan if you pick the additional option ("I've heard what she said...") is a matter of animation 'locking' in a small smile he gives to Lavellan when he tells her "You already did (help)"... It happens sometimes throughout the base game - you can see expressions being "locked" if you choose different dialogue options; they persist as the character goes through other lines, even if their tone suggests a different expression should be played.

That same smile doesn't exist if you pick another dialogue option and is pretty much unavailable to non-elf Quizzies. So I treat it more as an animation flub rather than intentional expression.

I also don't really see expression he gives assquisitors as disturbing... it's more like "Oh, you want to act like a petulant child? Well, okay then...Not like I expected anything more from you <_< "

Although - I have to admit... Solas can pull off "dark sexy" like nobody's business. Damn, man... More of that shadowed, straight-back-with-arms-behind imposing walk and soon I won't care if you're a redeemable antihero or an evil bastard rotten to the bone ...

Anwyay, I also enjoy the difference in body language - in case of disliked Quizzies he's not just standing up and looking down all the time, but the camera angle makes him look even more dark and imposing; he's always on the dominant side and grabs assQuizzy's hand like that of a stupendously irritating four-year-old.

In case of liked Quizzies he kneels, which basically means that he's metaphorically 'down on their level' in terms of perceived hierarchy, and even if he gets up to remove the Anchor, he first asks them to give them their hand, and always uses his soothing voice. And well... in case of romanced Lavellan he stays on the same eye level up until he removes the Anchor via kiss (which, now that I think about it, couldn't be more fairly-tale like, even if still sad and dramatic  :D).

I agree! Sometimes you have to put that smile on, no matter how you're feeling on the inside, and sometimes you just smile at the terrible situation you're in!

Yes world! I'm laughing at you! BECAUSE YOU SUCK RIGHT NOW!!

It was intended to bring people happiness, and lighthearted cheer.... it's had some adverse side effects.

Another thing to note is that both times Solas makes this face he is either facing away or in the process of facing away from the Inquisitor. These are the times Solas let's his face show his true emotions.

It's this face that shows Solas has a very, very dark side if he feels justified in what he is doing in my opinion. It's like subtle mixture of amusement and pleasure.

Color me disturbed.

Firstly, I appreciate you going through the trouble of getting both videos. I liked your comment but here's a heart too <3.

Lastly, I looked at both videos with and without sound and I can't honestly say I see a creepy smile. I think the lighting and angle can maybe make it look like he's smiling, but I just don't see it. I could be wrong though. It throws an interesting perspective regardless, but I don't think it's in character for him. He even says to Bull "Unless the fight is personal, violence is a means to an end. It isn't appropriate to celebrate."

Obviously he could be lying, but I don't think he is.

Case in point, the first dialogue you have with Varric. After choosing one of the emotional responses (stoic, confused, etc.) his face changes to reflect yours but stick that way for the rest of the conversation until towards the end, and it can look pretty odd depending on the one you chose (the teary eyed one comes to mind).

Edit: Apologies for the double post.

I was looking through the Cassandra and Varric banters and I saw this:

Cassandra: Varric, how could you let the Knight-Captain be framed for murder?

Varric: Well I did spent three entire chapters setting it up.

Cassandra: But she didn't deserve it! You'd already put her through more than enough!

Varric: Look seeker, if you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death!

Cassandra: That makes no sense!

Varric: But you care enough to argue. If she has a nice afternoon and took a nap you'd stop reading.

It's the writers speaking to us through Varric!

Fans: Writers, how could you let the Inquisitor lose her arm?

Developers: Well we did spend the whole DLC setting it up.

Fans: But she didn't deserve it! You'd already put her through more than enough!

Is it bad if I want a generic guy saves the girl scene? I just want to see Solas save Lavellan from a baddie. Not gonna happen I know.

Yeah...I don't think we will get a 'knight in shining armour' scene with that one. Zevran would probably do that, though.

I have to channel my inner Cassandra to say that yes, indeed, I wouldn't mind seeing a scene like that. -_-

I just set his behavior to "defend controlled character" for battles. He's saved my Lavellan 2-3 times by hitting an enemy charging at her with his stone fist. No tactical reason for this setting, I do it purely for a few more sweet moments in-game :)

Well, we did sort of get that... If the Anchor is a baddy...

Edit: My Lavellan ain' no damsel in distress though. I think she'd complain.

I don't see why it's so far-fetched!

Say something happens (like Mythal forces Well drinker to release the Evanuris for murdery purposes) and Lavellan is there (she was my Well drinker) Andruil goes to shoot her and Solas grabs her and throws both of them into the nearest Eluvian, which he proceeds to breaks after rushing through.

I think that is Solas' 'being grim and fatalistic' face. That smile doesn't have to mean that he is sinister and evil, people smile for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes we smile while we are angry, or sad, or happy. Sometimes I smirk in a very unfortunate situation where I KNOW that nothing can go right despite all of my efforts, because the human body has to deal with all of these emotions in some kind of way. I think that's what happens to Solas in those moments, too.

Agreed. There is a real human defence mechanism that makes your emotions do weird things in the face of terrible pain. I've had a number of situations of pain/grief/anger where I couldn't NOT smile at the absurdity of it all, like being sad, frowning, crying suddenly don't make sense to you at that moment. Brains are weird. People are complex. Bioware has done a really good job of writing Solas to be grey. Really the only way that we can be getting such VASTLY different opinions of him is because he is grey.

Usually I agree, but after so many games where we have to play therapist and comforter to our companions and bail them out of trouble or be the guiding light in their personal quest... it's nice to see them try and save you for once. Who here didn't like the jailbreak scene in DAO? :D

On this note, the redemption, "what I'm doing is wrong" realization scene (and it WILL come, I have faith) has the potential to be fricking amazing. With full next gen capability and those careful expressions and body language they always give Solas. And GDL's top tier voice acting. It'll be awesome and probably heartbreaking. We'd get to watch Solas all but fall apart to be able to build himself back up again, if he can.
