I attended the Dragon Age (and by extension: Mass Effect and Balder’s Gate) panel at ECEE this weekend, and jotted down some interesting and amusing little things the panel talked about. The people siting on the panel were: Lukas Kristjanson, Patrick Weekes, Mark Darrah, Cameron Lee, and Mike Laidlaw.
- Cameron Lee explained his favourite bug from Inquisition, in which one mount would ride another mount instead of the inquisitor. It looked… well, interesting, to say the least.
- Weekes stated that the thing he enjoys about the Dragon Age series is that each game follows a different protagonist. He feels this means they are able to tell the story of the WORLD of Thedas, rather than just one character within the world
- Luke is currently writing for Mass Effect: Andromeda.
- Tali’s accent: Her accent was supposed to be ‘Romanian like’. When they were first creating the world of Mass Effect, they only had plans for the one Quarian (Tali), and therefore allowed the VA for her ( Liz Sroka) to pick the voice and accent she wanted to use. Liz decided to impersonate her Grandmother’s accent, which was a Romanian accent.
- Tali’s accent caused issues later on, however, as none of the VA’s who were brought on in ME2 and 3 to voice the Quarians could replicate the accent. Bioware decided to go with ‘ship accent’ rather than an official Quarian accent that everyone had.
- Luke wanted a scene in Inquisition where, if you romanced Sera, you could have sex on a dragon. He had apparently written the scene up but was told by the animators ‘No’
- There were never any plans for a Scout Harding romance. They had no money for it, and it was never in the works. They decided to add the flirting in for a spot of fun, and to give Harding more of a personality and a connection to the inquisitor.
- In fact, Harding was added on late in game development. They realized they needed an introduction to each map, and had to have some sort of guide for the player to use when they entered a new area. Harding was added to suggest points of interest and certain missions you had to complete in the area.
- Solas was always planned to be part of a larger narrative structure.
- Weekes sees him as a ‘tragic figure’. Not evil but also not good. He had an agenda that he set out to complete, and nothing would make him bend.
- Originally, the player was made the inquisitor incredibly early in the game. The player began the game already as the inquisitor, and Bioware had this quick cutscene explaining how you closed a rift so bam! You’re super special. They realized this was jumping the gun and started ‘Operation Sledgehammer’ to rewrite the beginning in greater detail, and allowed the player to become the inquisitor rather than start out as one.
Everyone on the panel was asked their favourite line, and their favourite romance. Some answered in full, others in halves. They said:
- Laidlaw’s favourite line was a conversation between Sera and Blackwall in Trespasser about ‘big swords’ and ‘counterweights’. His favourite romance is Juhani from KOTOR.
- Weeke’s favourite line was Sera’s proposal in Trespasser (if you romanced her)
- Lee’s favourite line was ‘why can’t anything in this ****** world stay fixed?’ and he said he’s shagged everyone in the Bioware games so he doesn’t have a favourite. Someone in the audience called out Garrus’ name and so he agreed.
- Darrah joked about his favourite romance being a dwarf romance they had to cut. THIS WAS A JOKE, TUMBLR.
- Luke’s favourite line was from Balder’s Gate, in which he got to write a chicken saying ‘buck buck buck’
