I like this one:

  • Dorian: Solas, what's this whole look of yours about?
  • Solas: I'm sorry?
  • Dorian: No, that outfit is sorry. What are you supposed to be, some kind of woodsman?
  • Dorian: Is it a Dalish thing? Don't you dislike the Dalish? Or is it some kind of statement?
  • Solas: No.
  • Dorian: Well, it says "apostate hobo" to me.

(if Vivienne is in the party)

  • Vivienne: Unwashed apostate hobo, more specifically.

Which is even more fun now because Solas completely sheds that look in Trespasser. Makes me think he was wearing it when he joins the Inquisition to ease suspicion and not because he was truly a fan of the 'apostate hobo' fashion style.

On a different note, do you think there's any chance Solas has friends and loved ones still alive and in uthenera or trapped behind eluvians? When he talks about 'restoring his people' it sounds very cold, but perhaps less so if *not* going through with his plans means abandoning those elves forever.

I think he likes both styles. Maybe he wants to show off how he can rock both styles. His original robes looks so huggable and comfy.

That's just bizarre (and fascinating) how the same thing can look different for different people :D

My ex has eyes like that. Sometimes they look blue, sometimes gray, sometimes greenish-blue. They're blue with some color in the irises and they just....shift depending on light and whether it's a leap year or something as arbitrary as that. :P

Mine are brown with a slightly darker ring around the outside. :P No purple elven eyes for me, but that's what games are for.

Oh, I see. They've never done that before, and I don't know why they would. Weekes said we'd get closure, so I'm optimistic.

And I mean, this is Solas we're talking about. This man is terrible at breakups, and I don't mean that he doesn't handle them well. I mean, he fails completely at breaking up, every time he does it. I'm not even sure he comprehends what a breakup is, because every time he "breaks up", he just makes the relationship more serious.

"We shouldn't" turns into a trip to Lavellan's quarters, which becomes "I love you" on literally the second date. Walks away again except now she's vhenan every time they talk to each other. Third date, now it's time for a tingly wyvern pit and throwing his entire millenia-long plan into the wind. At the last moment he remembers himself, breaks up again. Toughs it out for the evanuris-equivalent of, like, a day, calling her "Inquisitor" like a true professional. Exceeeeept now in Trespasser, surprise she's vhenan again, and also "my love". For this date, he saves her life and finally tells her the truth. Two years is goddamn nothing for him, and he couldn't even hold himself together for that long.

So now he's broken up again, and it's super for realsies this time. He's her enemy, he's wearing a fabulous pelt, he told her "I will never forget you" like he truly believes the relationship is totally unsalvageable. So probably the very next time they meet, he's going to leap into her arm, twirl around, then they'll go on a decades-long tour of the Fade and grow old together. Then on his deathbed, he'll whisper "this cannot continue." And she'll say "Suuuuuuure. Sure, vhenan. I know you'll be back the very instant I turn around."

And he will be, because that's how bad Solas is at breakups.

That's what gray eyes usually do - the color depends a bit on the color of surroundings, but the base color is usually solid grey.

I actually think he does prefer the simpler style. He seems to have worn simpler clothes in the past, but when he fully embraced "Fen'Harel", he became a leader and he put on a costume of sorts. The elven general.

They're definitely blue, but they do shift. Solas, I think, has gray eyes though.

But he also likes fancy stuff like frilly cakes and he likes the game of the winter palace.

Anyway, what’s your favorite banter, and why? What companion do you think has the best banters with Solas, be that the funniest or most meaningful? And whose relationship with Solas do you like the best (I feel like I should say excluding Cole, but just give your second favorite if he’s your first)? Ooooh, and who do you think Solas would get along the best with and the worst with in Origins, Awakening, and DA2!?

Can’t wait to see your answers :D

Hands down the chess match between Solas and Bull.  It's such a Solas way of cheering Bull up; slightly trollish, but genuinely meant.  And I really think it showcases the mental acuity of both characters.  We know Solas is clever, but Bull keeps his guard and cover up most of the time, so it's nice to see him matching wits with an equal.  As for other characters:

Origins: Best with Loghain, worst with Morrigan (we already saw them snipping at each other left and right in DA:I).  I know not everyone likes Loghain, but I think Solas would empathize with him the most, and he clearly doesn't judge Loghain one way or the other when he talks about seeing the battle at Ostagar in the Fade.  Though I really want to see him and Shale get into a snark-off about inferior fleshy gremlins :P

Awakening: Best with Justice and Sigrun, worst with Velanna.  Justice is a spirit, and I think Solas would delight in Sigrun's genuine curiosity about the world.  Velanna's aggressive Dalish-ness would rub Solas the wrong way, I think.

DA2:  Oh god.  It's a cop-out to say he'd get along best with Varric, but I'm going to anyway since everyone else is a goddamn mess.  As for who he'd get along with the worst...take your pick :P  Fenris is prickly as all hell, Aveline would get sick of his patronizing attitude in a heartbeat, and I think Solas would be appalled at what happened to Anders and Justice.

Didn't some people on tumblr or somewhere make some measurements based on game models or something? I can't remember. They said around 6 feet?

Anyhoo - from Trespasser scene (and romanced Lavellan angry option picked) he seems to be at least half a head taller than Lavellan :D

Depending on the scene, and also in comparison when in party or in the rotunda, the heights vary. I think they datamined 6ft but they seem to look different in relation to one another a lot of the time.

That was a great banter XD and I agree Solas definitely dressed like that to remain inconspicuous. Dress does matter a lot as Vivienne points out. The contrast in his dress (and gait) was a great way to show players how much Solas has changed, or how different he is. This isn't nerdy hobo Solas, this is bad**s godly Solas.

I would think he has acquaintances and friends that are in uthernera. Felassan was considered his friend, I'm sure they knew each other from the ancient times. Solas does seem like he might have always been a bit of a lone wolf though, so I don't know how strong these bonds are. And he's definitely lost people that matter to him to.

I think both are secretly jealous that he can wear something unassuming and still have more poise ;)

In fact, I think that's exactly the reason he picks unassuming stuff (well, aside from being a pragmatic bastard): put him in something more clean-cut or flashy and immediately you notice there's way more to him than what he gives away through 'apostate hobo' style.

He keeps his back super-straight and clasps his hands behind like he did nothing in Elvnhan, but marched regally and offered lessons on philosophy and proper etiquette :D

I love the chest match! Bull never stood a chance  I love chest too, but I doubt I could play without a board!

Loghain? That's an interesting choice, even with Solas knowing he let the alienage elves be sold to slavers? Shale's banter with Solas would be gold and I would love to see Solas's reaction to a creature like Shale!

Haha, definitely Justice, and how can you not love Sigrun? Velanna and Solas  I'd pay to hear his snarking at her.

Oh yeah, Solas would hate that Anders corrupted Justice like he did. I think he might have issues with Aveline and Fenris at first, but I can imagine their relationship becoming one of mutual respect. Fenris may have a hard time getting along with mages but Solas is just so understanding and sympathetic with slavery that I can't help but see them bond over that.

Hey, you could always have brown eyes and have almost no characters with your eye color. :P My Hawke has brown eyes but I don't think games get brown eyes right a lot of the time. They're either too dark and lifeless OR too light and shiny.

When I was playing the main game, I never truly get why Solas loved Lavellan. I mean, I get that he likes curiosity and he likes people who think deeply about nuances, but those are not uncommon traits among people in positions of power. I understood after I played trespasser. I think part of the reason why he loves her so much is because she treats him like an equal no matter what he did or who he is. He's probably not used to that. He's probably used to being above others and having to take responsibly for all decisions.

When he was with Lavellan, he had to take orders from someone else who he originally thought was just a typical Dalish. And this someone surprised him with her leadership skills. This  made him realize not only that modern elves are people, but that they are also no less than him. He's also probably used to people keeping somewhat of an emotional distance from him because of his identity so he it's likely that it was rare for women to openly pursue him with such genuineness. Considering his loneliness for these thousands of years, it's not hard to see how he was vulnerable to falling in love with Lavellan despite his desire to stay in control. Sigh, Solas.

To add to the eye argument, this is the close up shot the devs gave us way back when before the game came out.  There was probably a bigger version of it somewhere, but this was all I found!

Well, I certainly don't think Solas would be thrilled at the whole "selling people into slavery" thing.  But I think ultimately, Solas can see something of himself in Loghain.  There's that whole thing about steeling yourself to do horrible things because you think it's necessary to save your people.  Loghain at least is genuine in his love for Ferelden and fierce desire to protect them, even if his judgment is ******-poor.

Or maybe the parallels between them would be too much, and Solas would constantly snipe at him.  Kind of like he does with Blackwall over his deception.

I'm going to have to disagree Cee. Allowing Justice to possess him was done out of kindness, but it was a mistake. Justice was a spirit with righteous motivations and intentions, Anders's doubt, regret, and hatred is what turned Justice into Vengeance.

As Solas would point out, it's people that twist spirits into "demons" and it was Anders who twisted Justice into Vengeance

Ah, he forgave Blackwall right away though. I have very missed feelings about Loghain, my canon play through is Tabris and she hated his guts sooo those feelings kind of rubbed off on me.

Brown eyes are completely underrated.

Anders didn't corrupt Justice. Justice needed a body and made an offer. An offer that was not free of ulterior motive, though the spirit felt aligned to his cause.

I don't think he'd be quick to judge the idea of willing possession - what he'd be critical of would be their ignorance heading into it. We know now that possesion is reversible - however, a circle mage wouldn't know that, or ever think to question that. He'd probably look at the whole episode as tragic and avoidable. He'd probably also criticise how single-issue Anders can be - he's very dismissive of Merrill, if memory recalls, and basically asks whether she identifies as an elf or a mage, not seeing how those two things can co-exist and you can struggle for freedom as both. I can imagine Solas snarking back on her behalf there. He'd roll his eyes at the idea of a Tevinter chantry amulet being seen as a symbol of freedom. And as for the conclusion, I don't think his beef would be the violent destruction of a chantry - but rather, that it wasn't necessary, it was a waste of innocent life. It wasn't a calculated move, that it gave the Templars a mandate for counterrevolutionary action (i.e. annulling the circle), and likely exacerbated the situation rather than giving the common folk of Kirkwall a rallying call to join up with the mages and fight for their freedom together, and gaining power with minimal bloodshed. (For real, Anders is the worst example of revolutionary praxis ever. It's like if La Chinoise was a tragedy with dragons.)

In terms of the corruption issue: my view is that Anders didn't corrupt Justice and Justice didn't corrupt Anders - what occurred was a natural result of taking a spirit of justice and placing it in the body of a mortal mage who lived in perhaps the most unjust, most cruel city in Thedas for mages, where the two of them were unable to shape and bend the world to deliver justice as one might in the fade. Like, Anders has ran away from the wardens, is living in the dirty backalleys of Kirkwall with little to survive on, has completely lost his previous support network - he's not doing well. Add in a spirit of justice who struggles to adapt to an unchanging, unjust world, and it's not a surprise it goes to sh*t. I know my head would explode under such circumstances. I don't blame either of them in particular because they both consented to what happened - I primarily blame Kirkwall for being so damn terrible.

I still don't like Anders in DA2, but I sure as hell have some sympathy for him.

So much this.  For all his protests against the Chantry, Anders has a very Andrastian view of the Fade and its denizens.  As Merrill says, he believes in black and white--in good spirits and evil demons.  Solas would be the first to point out the problems with that view.  While I think he would feel for both Justice and Anders, and empathize strongly with Anders' desire for freedom, he'd also recognize the missteps that led them to their current situation.
