This is what I first thought. We also have a codex where an elf talks about returning to Arlathan and how the gates were wide open, much like the Golden City. I truly feel the Black City is Arlathan and the Shattered Library was very similar to the raw Fade. And since the Chantry thinks the Maker created the Veil, Solas' actions must have confused them or something in history was twisted.

Just means Solas is the Maker :P .

Which would mean that if Lavellan is in a romance with him she's the second coming of Andraste not just the Herald :D

Poor Lavellan. First she's the Herald of Andraste, then she's the Dread Wolf's lover, now she's also the Maker's lover aka Andraste reborn?

Speaking of the Titans and how we now know the Evanuris fought them in the past, it makes me wonder a few things unexplained in the Descent.

Was the reason that the Breach awoke it and why it had the Guardian (and Valta) attempt to attack the Inquisitor, due to it sensing the presence of the same kind of powerful Elven Magic of the calibre used by the Evanuris against it in the past? If the Titan feared they were once again active in Thedas and might be attacking it, that would probably explain why it seemed to be so agitated.

If so, then was Valta's connection to the Titan how she was able to convince the TItan (after it caused her initial outburst) that we were a friend and no danger to it, despite the elven mark we had glued to our hand?

But Sandal is the Maker.

I've already committed to that and everything.

Oh that's a good point! Many thought Descent was pointless and Trespasser is the only DLC that matters, but Descent connects majorly if you find that codex in Trespasser!

I could see that being the cause. The Guardian wanted to kill the Inquisitor, not Valta. The Inquisitor had the Mark of an ancient elf, but Valta was able to connect with the Titan (like a hive-mind) and assure them no ancient elves were coming to harm it.

I think that's likely what Mythal goal is as well.

She was the arbiter of law and justice among the Evanuris, someone whom was seen as tough but fair. For her to suffer an injustice at the hands of her own kinsmen, that would definitely explain a lot about her motivations and desire for some kind of retribution.

It makes me wonder that since he seems unsurprised she survived being slain, Solas' revenge against the Evanuris was less about the murder itself and more that the others had the sheer gall to try to do that to her in the first place.

I also doubt that she's influencing or possessing him, it makes more sense to me that she passed on her godhood to Morrigan and simply sacrificed some of her power and current form to her old friend. That being said, I don't think that Mythal necessarily has goals aligned with Solas, but her plans are somewhat tied to him carrying out his.

(Although, her plan could be as simple as wanting him to tear down the Veil, so she can finally kick the snot out of the Evanuris)

Also, I believe that Mythal's murder was "the straw that broke the camel's back", so to speak. Solas put up the veil as a last resort to prevent the Evanuris from "destroying the world" in a literal sense...

I wonder how many years were spent freeing the slaves and leading a rebellion before these events transpired...

If so, then I feel really bad for the Titan. It woke up, thinking it was under threat, completely alone for all we know. Except the Sha-Brytol, who are unable to talk to it. So it lashed out, desperate for some kind of friendly contact.

What I wonder though is if we were inside it, where does it begin and end? Within it was a vast paradise of beautiful water and trees, birds and a light like the sun!

Maybe the Titans were like the lionturtles in Avatar, but for the dwarves. Sentient beings that were home to an entire people. It would explain Solas's comment about the dwarves being a severed arm of a giant; they evolved as part of the Titans. It might even be the origin of their caste system. Higher castes like Shapers couls talk directly with their Titan hosts, and at the bottom, the casteless would be the ones exiled from the Titan--from the Stone itself. The Sha-Brytol would be somewhere in between, servants of the Titan who are unable to talk to it.

I'd hardly call that redemption. You've saved Solas from his conscience, but not much else.

Groundhog Day: Inquisition sounds unimaginably painful though. Think my heart broke a little reading that.

Edit: oh cool, I grabbed the top of 5.2k pages, woop woop.

I don't think Descent was pointless, and I enjoyed learning what I did, but I wish there were just a little more to it. I'm just impatient for more story, though. :P

Yeah, it seems to direct it's aggression towards the Inquisitor in both instances, while making sure to throw Valta back to a safe distance first before striking. That seems to suggest that it's actions were some kind of conscious decision on it's part.

What is more intriguing is when you realise that Valta reveals that it sees the Sha-Brytol (and their drinking of it's blood) as completely irrelevant. Yet when it senses the presence of the Ancient Elven Magic on the Inquisitor, it immediately deems us a sufficient enough threat that it feels like it needs to take direct action and "release the hounds".

That makes sense... but Solas... seriously? Severed arm???

Also in DAO we learn a bit about the Titans, and how some memories are missing in DAI. It seems Mythal pulled a Cole moment after they uncovered bad things.

And in her journal she says the Sha-Brytol are scared of Valta and give her offerings.

Lionturtles. Spirits. Breaking into the spirit world. I hope Solas gets to be Zuko and not Azula - I know my Lavellan is already Mai -

Yet Valta claims that it's Inquisitor who calmed the Guardian down (by kicking its stony butt, but still...) - plus, she implies that this whole thing was supposed to happen. And considering that after the events of Descent the Titan shuts down the entrance (kinda like Solas shuts down the last eluvian after Inky goes through it), I think the Titan itself knew who was coming.

I'm too lazy to quote all the multiple recent posts... :P

I really don't think that Solas seeks to literally (and unrealistically, IMO) restore the ancient Elves or ancient Elvhenan, based on this dialogue with Dorian and other dialogue throughout the game:

  • Dorian: Solas, for what it's worth, I'm sorry.
  • Dorian: The elven city of Arlathan sounds like a magical place, and for my ancestors to have destroyed it...
  • Solas: Dorian... hush.
  • Solas: Empires rise and fall. Arlathan was no more "innocent" than your own Tevinter in its time.
  • Solas: Your nostalgia for the ancient elves, however romanticized, is pointless.
  • Solas: If you wish to make amends for past transgressions, free the slaves of all races who live in Tevinter today.
  • Dorian: I... don't know that I can do that.
  • Solas: Then how sorry are you?

I always interpreted the final bit of the dialogue as Solas calling out Dorian, that for all his talk of being a rebel and pariah who wants to change things, he has yet to put his money where his mouth is and actually do anything about it (like Solas did for his own people).

"And thus the Dread Wolf spoke to the moustached mage of Tevinter and told him to nut up or shut up, that he should either go big or go home..."

I agree completely!

I also think there's even more implied by that little bit of banter...The previous lines seem to strongly indicate that his goals do NOT include bringing back the ancient Elves/Arlathan/Elvhenan in a literal sense or in the state that they were...

Removing the veil and "bringing back the Magic" may be the only thing in modern Thedas that upsets the balance of power, or status quo, enough to actually end slavery in both a literal and figurative sense...

Where abouts? I just finished DA:O again today (did the Ultimate Sacrifice for the first time and bawled like a baby), and managed to collect most of the codex, but didn't recall them being mentioned? Could you possibly point me in the right direction?

Exactly!

This is why Trespasser would have been better if we the players hadn't gotten that reveal teaser after the vanilla credits. I felt like such a stupid Lois Lane. "Look Jimmy! The Dread Wolf removed vallaslin. Mild mannered Solas said they were slave markings....These frescos are pretty. They remind me of something, but it hurts my pretty little female brain too much to think on it any more. This Dread Wolf guy was kinda cute. That hooded cape, woof. Ho hum. Oh look hidden stairs...Eeek, bloodthirsty Qunari! Help me Fen'Harel!"

Seeing that mural would have been a skin tingling aha moment. "Oh my Mythal! Solas is the Dread Wolf!" Instead it was, "Good grief...this is embarrassing." I loved the lore dump, but boy did it feel silly.

Edit: I don't draw much, but this totally demands a Superman Dragon Age crossover comic with Cole as Jimmy. I might just do it...
