I agree completely!

I also think there's even more implied by that little bit of banter...The previous lines seem to strongly indicate that his goals do NOT include bringing back the ancient Elves/Arlathan/Elvhenan in a literal sense or in the state that they were...

I think he probably intends to restore the elves, but not necessarily the empire and evanuris with it.

Exactly!

This is why Trespasser would have been better if we the players hadn't gotten that reveal teaser after the vanilla credits. I felt like such a stupid Lois Lane. "Look Jimmy! The Dread Wolf removed vallaslin. Mild mannered Solas said they were slave markings....These murals are pretty. They remind me of something, but it hurts my pretty little female brain too much to think on it any more. This Dread Wolf guy was kinda cute. That hooded cape, woof. Ho hum. Oh look hidden stairs...Eeek, bloodthirsty Qunari! Help me Fen'Harel!"

Seeing that mural would have been a skin tingling aha moment. "Oh my Mythal! Solas is the Dread Wolf!" Instead it was, "Good grief...this is embarrassing." I loved the lore dump, but boy did it feel silly.

Not every player is going to put two and two together, though. I mean, I was dense enough to believe Iron Bull until Trespasser :P. The lore is already complicated, so from a meta standpoint, I can't blame the devs for spelling it out.

Edit: I don't draw much, but this totally demands a Superman Dragon Age crossover comic with Cole as Jimmy. I might just do it...

Rofl, lets be real. It's all in character for most Lavellans XD

Spelling it out is fine...Solas does that at the end anyway. I just don't know why the devs thought the player needed to know before their player character would know.

Maybe they thought it would be confusing and unsatisfying to have Solas just disappear with no explanation.  They might be treading lightly around endings after ME3.  It's different from Morrigan's situation, since she at least partially explained herself and said goodbye properly if you did the Dark Ritual.

I feel like rather than unlocking those codexes so we looked smart for working it out, we should have had some kind of dialogue where it was implied we had sussed it out prior to the final confrontation... or for Lavellans (male and female) we had, but were still in extreme denial about it.

Actually, the frescos should have been either damaged, had the face scratched out, covered or vandalised in some way, so we could suspend our disbelief that nobody comments on it looking like Solas at any point during the entire DLC. It would have fit even more for the fresco in the library, as we know the people trapped inside were royally hacked off at him and would have trashed his stuff.

Where abouts? I just finished DA:O again today (did the Ultimate Sacrifice for the first time and bawled like a baby), and managed to collect most of the codex, but didn't recall them being mentioned? Could you possibly point me in the right direction?

I'm going to have to dig for it. it's so obscure you barely blink when you find it.

Exactly!

OMG you nailed it perfectly!  And when we do find out the truth after searching for those 4 codex entries, she doesn't even say anything until she sees Solas. After getting all 4 I would have thought she would say "It can't be... Solas IS Fen'Harel?" and then companion reactions. That would have been nice!

It really is probably because we find out his secret at the end of the game it's hard to hear everyone talk of Fen'Harel and Solas as separate people in Trespasser and wonder who this agent is.

I was joking earlier, but really it's been like that for all Inquisitors with a lot of things. Blackwall I'll admit, that genuinely surprised me, but Solas not being the simple humble hobo apostate he said he was was news to no one, and everyone in the Inquisition was simply ignoring this for the most part, I believe, due to his usefulness to them, which is kind of a poor excuse honestly.

Then there's the mages at redcliffe, where everyone seems to just ignore the obvious, which is the magisters were altering things to get the mages on their side, whether it be time or minds. Iron Bull says "I'm a spy" for crying out loud, lol, so surprise surprise when he betrays you if you let the chargers die. Fully expected. And the Mythal thing, lol.

Love quizzy but not the brightest at times. Better than Hawke though.

Catching up!

They did entirely too well with his face. Really.

Which makes me terrified if they put an elf LI in the next game. By then they will have mastered this whole Frostbite engine thing and I can see myself accidently breaking things on my desk at the sight of a new elvhen glory.

Doomed. Just doomed.

I'm actually worried about this from a role-playing perspective. How likely is it that the most prominent heroes in recent history have all been women... who've taken elven lovers?

Uh, darn attractive elves attracting me.

I also have an elf thing and will probably go for a male elf regardless of his looks and the information released about him. Maybe I should hope for the only elven romance options to be a gay male or female. That should keep me away from them in my first/canon playthrough!

I theorized once or twice that it could be the case. It's also possibly a reason why he keeps Inky at bay - that way, if they will stop him/kill him, Quizzies will never have to suffer realization that they've basically doomed those "hiding and hurting" to either death or suffering no one can break.

Oooh, that's interesting.

One of Solas' diaglogue says pretty much just that, something along the lines of "you've always shown a [somethingIcan'tremember] I admired, it would be too easy to tell you too much". Well played writers-- Er, I mean Solas. xD

Yeah, that's the best excuse I've ever heard a character give to keep things hidden from the reader/player/viewer!

I don't think she's possessing Solas either but...I dunno.  Mythal makes me worry.  She was never exactly warm and fuzzy as Flemeth, was she?  I think there are much more malicious forces than her at work in Thedas, but she's still a powerful, dangerous, ancient being whose motives (as far as we know) include a reckoning that will shake the world to its foundations

She might be absolutely in the right, especially if the Evanuris were as horrible as Solas says.  But I'm not sure that her concept of justice and our concept of what's good for Thedas will align.

She did look genuinely sad when Morrigan said she wouldn't be the mother Flemeth was to her... but yeah, I don't trust her either. But I think we all know that the true puppet master of The Dragon Age is Sandal. Seriously, why was Flemeth speaking with him in DA2? If it was Flemeth, and if it wasn't just a vision.

Woo 5,200 pages! :wizard:

Although Hawke's not the one with "What's going on here?" as their catchphrase.

(Seriously Varric, that should have been the title of the book about the Inquisition!)

Here we go! It's The Stone itself describes a Titan.

http://dragonage.wik.../wiki/The_Stone

"The Stone is believed to be a living and a shifting entity with a will that surrounds and guides the dwarves. She supports them, shelters them, and offers them the most priceless gifts of the earth, such as ore, gems, and lyrium."

If I recall since I last played DAO in the early Summer, many of the codex entries about dwarven life implies it too. Need to dig some more.

OK.  I've had some time to put on my tinfoil hat and think about the Titans, the Blight, and the war with the Evanuris.  Lore rambles incoming, spoilered for length.

Not bad at all! We do know their memory was wiped because of whatever the elves found and then sealed away. Chances are the Blight was like a chemical weapon of mass destruction that backfired.

Maybe Solas's punishment for apocalypse should be a weekend with Oghren.  That'll learn him!  Or just make him want to destroy the world even more.

Dragon Age does have a very strong theme of horrible unintended consequences.  It happened with the Evanuris, and again with the magisters of Tevinter.  It would fit the pattern if the dwarves unwittingly brought about the very darkspawn that have them on the edge of extinction.

Maybe the Blight was originally meant to corrupt spirits and disrupt magic, since the ancient elves were likely part spirit.  A weapon that corrupted their spirits would be devastating to them.  But lyrium is also connected to magic, so using the Blight as a weapon also resulted in the Titans getting Blighted?  In this case, the poisoning of the Titans would be an accident, not deliberate, but the end result would still be the inexorable spread of the Blight.

Not everybody buys the DLC, so they probably put it in there to give those players a lead in on who was going to be the next antagonist.

Ugh Orghen? I really didn't care for him, Awakening with him in it sucked. And I'm restating DAO with a male Cousland (A Morrigan romance, but he likes Leliana too. The jealous conversions between the two is so worth it, I can tell you that!)

Another thought, because I've had too much coffee today and can't shut up.

What if those sleeping, masked in a mirror are literally millions of ancient elves that are sundered and suffering, and if Solas doesn't act will either remain suffering or die. If Solas does act, modern Thedas possibly dies. How bad is Solas then? How bad will we be to say they can suffer and die just so our people can live? Makes us not too different from each other, I suspect.

I doubt this is the situation, but it does put some ideas into perspective.

I've had this thought also.

Another thought about something Cole says is this.

  • Cole: You don't need to envy me, Solas. You can find happiness in your own way.
  • Solas: I apologize for disturbing you, Cole. I am not a spirit, and sometimes it is hard to remember such simple truths.
  • Cole: They are not gone so long as you remember them.
  • Solas: I know.
  • Cole: But you could let them go.
  • Solas: I know that as well.
  • Cole: You didn't do it to be right. You did it to save them.
  • Inquisitor: Solas, what is Cole talking about?
  • Solas: A mistake. One of many made by a much younger elf who was certain he knew everything.
  • Cole: You weren't wrong, though.
  • Solas: Thank you, Cole.

I question who Cole is talking about here also. I mean......Solas said he locked away the Evanuris to save the elvhen people.....but this sounds like whoever Solas cared about is gone.
