Art post again. :P

Post Trespasser: Solavellan render. Thinking of one another. After their final meeting, before abandoning Skyhold.

Trespasser: If romanced Lavellan could convince Solas to stay at the end of Trespasser.

Gorgeous art of Lavellan and Fen'Harel.

Sparrow and the Wolf. (Cute Solavellan)

Solavellan done for Inktober.

I Will Find You. (Lavellan going through the eluvian).

A bit NSFW Solavellan. Clean lineart version of this sketch.

Solas with different versions of him with hair.

University AU: Professor Solas' opinion on how Templar abilities suppress magic.

I've been thinking... There seems to be quite a lot of agreement that the Blight might have something to do with the Void. I have to wonder if it's actually true - I mean, there may yet be connection, but perhaps it isn't as direct as we may think it is. It's more like it and the Blight is an analogous side of the coin.

I wonder if the Blight itself may not be the Gangue (http://dragonage.wik...he_Gangue_Shade) - "a corruption as old as balance" that rests within the Earth/Stone?

In the same measure the Void may be an analogue of that, but on the side of the Fade - perhaps early on it was part of primordial chaos, or the thing let after it, or some sort of counter-balance. It may also be the thing that is described metaphorically as the 'night' in some songs and codexes?

It also makes me wonder if this is what may be represented in Solas's Hermit tarot card?

Spoiler

Also, did anyone notice that the fire in Solas's hand seems to either burn through or destroy the stars linking two symbols?

You know, I was thinking along the same lines reading about the gangue just the other day. I was all like "That sounds a lot like red lyrium." And then it tosses in the whole "Legion of the Dead are the only ones who can cut away at it so I was like "Oh, darkspawn"

Blight, blight and more blight.

I'm sleepy and don't make a lot of sense, but I get what your pointing at.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering whether the Gangue isn't the Blight (or whatever gave birth to the Blight) the dwarves managed to remember in diminished form from back before everything changed or they were made forgotten about things. Kinda like the casts system, that may yet be something of a distant echo of original structure of dwarven society or something.

you know, speaking of what dwarves remember, I wonder if it wad the ancient elves that erased all the stuff about the Titans from the memories and that is what those Trespasser codex entries are talking about. The one about the Evanuris digging to deep or whatever and some spell to seal off what they found.

Solas says dwarves are like a severed arm. So, someone had to make the cut right?

Yeah - though I wonder if dwarves were made forget before or after some dangerous was discovered? Because I suspect that someone played with Earth's/Titans' (dwarves?) memories long before Evanuris dealt with Mythal - perhaps so they could tap to Titans' powers or power they thought Titans or dwarves were either hoarding for themselves or hiding, while in reality they were protecting everyone from it.

Yeah, I mean it would make sense if after the war with Titans the elves made some kind of attempt to get the dwarves to mine the lyrium for them. Cause I wonder what lyrium did back before the Veil. The power trip on it was probably ridonkulus. And, cutting dwarves off by altering/erasing memories seems pretty effective to me.

Maybe Mythal felt bad for them and she was trying to help the dwarves and thats why her statues and stuff were down there?

Theorycrafting hurts the brain bad when you really need sleep. But so much fun.

This thread moves waaaaay to fast!  So this is going to be almost completely OT (still Solas, but not arts or armour or...).  More like Solas`s motives and WHAT THE HECK he`s doing that isn`t so stupid and hardyhar evil and/or self-centered as it appears.

On whether or not Solas's intentions are evil or evilish and that it's not right (or that it's flawed that he wishes) to bring back the past.  And it got me thinking: are we looking at this from a Western viewpoint, ie: time and history as inherently linear?  Time and progress march on, things change, yaddayadda, deal with it.  Cuz what if that's not the case in Thedas (one can make the argument about RL, too, I just...won't)?

Greetings, The Solas Thread!

After many months of lurking (sorry about that, by the way), I decided to formally join in on the conversation. I usually live in the greater BSN, but I like this thread :) I hope you would allow me in, even though I may not be most active of posters at times.

I also bring an offering of song! I am sure someone already posted this in one of the...wow, more than 5k pages, now that is impressive. Still, there is no such thing as too much good music and I think this one fits the subject at hand:

So, yeah, hello and everything!

Oooh are we sharing Solas/Solavellan feels-inducing music again? Yes. Good. Very good. More for my Solas playlist that I never intended on starting, but did anyway . Listening to songs that other people have proposed for Solas and Solavellan has introduced me to a lot of really good music.

I would like to add this epic, atmospheric gem: War by Young Yeller.

To me it speaks to Solas's role as the rebellious figure, his duty to his People, and the inevitability of him fulfilling his ambitions even when (in certain playthroughs) he hopes you can stop him, prove him wrong, or change his mind.

Lyrics:

Also, it occurs to me that this song could also apply to the Inquisitor >.>. God, I love multipurpose songs.

Blight, blight and more blight.

I'm sleepy and don't make a lot of sense, but I get what your pointing at.

If the gangue relates to the Blight and to Red Lyrium, I wonder if, in the old days where the Titans were awake and the dwarves connected to them, they might not have been almost litterally the Stone's immune system. They fought and contained the Gangue and kept it from spreading and infecting everything. But then, the evanuris fought the Titans and won and decided to mine them for lyrium. They severed the dwarves's consciouness from their Titans and made them forget (so they wouldn't retaliate?). In making them forget though, they prevented them from accomplishing their most important function, that of stopping the gangue from spreading. And thus, the Blight started infecting things. Perhaps that place in the Deep Road we visited in Trespasser was one of the first. When Mythal and her people realized the gangue/Blight was spreading and they had no tools to stop it (that even they could become infected) they closed the mine and tried to get everyone to forget about it.

But some wouldn't leave it well alone (Andruil, I'm looking at you there). There was power in that new form of lyrium and some were power-mad enough to use that power in spite of the risk of corruption. Now, the evanuris being extremely powerful, I would expect the corruption to be much slower than usual, but still it happened and there was no cure for it. They killed Mythal as the voice or reason against these incredibly dangerous experiment with the Blight. Solas panicked and figured out the only solution was to lock them away along with everything they'd corrupted already (I'm squarely in the camp of Black City=Corrupted Arlathan, or at least remnants of it). In the end though, as long as the Titans sleep and the dwarves have forgotten their purpose (and lack the power to do anything anyway without their link to their Titans) the Blight will spread and it threatens to cover the whole world. Again, the Grey Wardens are only buying Thedas some time. Ultimately, they will fail. And now that actual Red lyrium has surfaced, I believed Thedas is running out of time. Bringing down the veil might not be a solution to that particular problem, as it predates Mythal's murder and might possibly be older than Solas himself.

It makes me happy to see so many fans of Within Temptation - I think they are my most favorite band ever (although I really love Nightwish as well...). I listened to this WT-song earlier today, and it kind of reminds me of Solas:

Now I'm going to go a bit off topic and also to put on the tin-foil hat, so bear with me. I sometimes wonder if the lore regarding lyrium and the blight is somehow connected to Pytharoras theories regarding music. I'm certainly no expert on ancient Greek philosophy (and I know even less about music), but to my understanding Pythagoras believed that music was deeply intertwined with the whole world and had the power to call forth and enhance emotions like rage and desire (*cough demons cough*) and also heal wounds (perhaps like the lyrium-exposed Ashes did to Arl Eamon?). Pythagoras also believed that discordant harmonies could lead to sickness and in worse cases societal upheaval (the blight?). He also thought all living beings emits a song that praises their creator (isn't that kind of what one of the canticles said the spirits did to the Maker after he created them?). I think the biggest question for me personally is why does lyrium, which mainly can be found in the Deep Roads, have such an allure to spirits of the Fade when they inhabit a completely different plane of existence altogether?

Now that I've written it I think it looks stupid, and I'm not sure where I'm going with this... I just have this feeling that if we want to understand Thedas we really need to understand the Song as it seems to constantly crop up in all the religions, and now after the events of Descent it seems even more important.

There's a fair few on that Album that fit really well. I tend to think of "Stand my Ground" as my Lavellan's theme song pretty much, and "Forsaken" makes me think of Abelas and the other surviving Ancient Elvhen.

There's a couple of lines in "Somewhere" that I think really fit Solas too. "Lost in the Darkness, trying to find your way home."
