Welcome, Lethellen (I just got introduced to this gender neutral version of the word.  Didn't think it would come in handy so soon!)

We cope by discussing theories, sharing cute animal pictures and eating cookies.

Welcome to the thread! I know exactly how you feel! And there have been quite a few posts here like yours if you scroll back. Take heart and keep reading all the other amazing stuff in here - it helps! You'll find many theories here and some are not to bad for a future outlook. ;)

Nothing is written in stone, yet, so don't believe to much in Solas' doom and gloom words - he likes being a drama queen! :P

Welcome to the blanket fort! You've just taken your first big step towards recovery from the Solavellan hellspiral. Any questions or issues, lay 'em all out here and I'm sure someone will answer. C:

Welcome, the blanket fort and any discussion you'd like to have are open for you. There are feelings but a lot of us are hopeful. Chat with us.

Thank you for the welcome, guys. I shall scroll back and read some of your theories in hope of ... well, hope!

Right now I guess I'm stuck on who Solas even is anymore. I started out ambivalent about the character. And just came to appreciate him more and more. And he has some pretty annoying traits, let's be honest. But he also seems to care so deeply about things - about trying to do better, about fighting hopelessness, about people (some anyway). This is the character who was so patient and protective with Cole, who tries to take Sera under his wing as a budding revolutionary (haha),  who tells you stories about matchmaker spirits and experiencing the pain and joy of mortal lives in the Fade.

In Trespasser, you learn that he goes to great lengths to the elven slaves of his own time.

How can somebody like that be so willing to destroy the world? Whatever his guilt, whatever he has to make up for, how arrogant do you have to be to decide that it's right to snuff out countless lives in order to 'put it right'?

I'd say it makes my head hurt, but really it makes my heart hurt.

I suppose there may be more nuance I'll pick up in future playthroughs, though I'm too depressed to even think about that now.

Leliana is one of my favorite characters in the series, and I headcanon her one of my Lavellan's close friends. And is in fact, the only one who remains always kind of nearby. Cassandra does too but she travels as well. Leliana is my Divine but she's still going to help with Solas.

The best thing to keep in mind about Solas is that Cole believes he's worth saving.

Also, it takes time to get feelings and thoughts in order.  My first response to all the reveals was horror and hatred towards Solas (and the fact that I'd been a fan of his character).

After Trespasser, it took a couple of hours to get my feelings in order. A lot of us here have had a couple of weeks to settle. There is a lot of nuance, and Solas has many layers.

When you ask how can he be willing, well, it makes me think of the dialogue option where you can tell him "I never thought of you as someone who would do that, Solas" and his response is "Thank you."

It's heartbreaking and says so much, and I think sums up some people's feelings on the matter, but if it's still fresh for you, you'll be able to sort through it with some time and blanket fort kittens. :)

I like Leliana a lot also.

Aside from romancing Zevran for science, replaying Origins lately has been fun almost solely based on having younger Leliana around. When I played Inquisition the first time I remember thinking how awesome Leliana had grown as a character, but going back and seeing her young again hit me even harder with that.

Plus, come on, we have all seen her and the way she goes down at the end of In Hushed Whispers. Not to mention we find out Leliana is also resistant to the Blight for some unknown reason. And then afterwards when you talk to her about it she says "I always loved a good bargain."

Leliana is a beast and I love her.

Meanwhile, I finished a second chapter of my Solas rivalmance (or at least I think it's a rivalmance?). If anyone's interested:

Edit: And phew, that was a tough chapter. I came up with the idea for it months ago, but made so many changes till it came out OK.

I love you guys, but damn, this thread runs fast. I now have five different fanfics open in tags in the twenty/thirty pages or so I missed. ALSO the comparison to Hoenheim from FMA is A+++ YES BETH GREATLY APPROVES. I read FMA when Brotherhood was just coming out. It's been a while, I've forgotten half the plot, but I do remember Hoenheim being smoking hot I mean a really intriguing and interesting character who was one of my favourites.

Yes.

In other news, about my damn silly life: it was my birthday today and I spent it getting drunk with my best friend and all his mates at his department's party (philosophy departments spend all of your fees on access to online papers and booze, can confirm with 100% certainty). Of all things, I ended up attending a feminist ethics lecture earlier on forgiveness, particularly its social function: I might write a bit on how that could apply to DA when I'm feeling more coherent, because I know we had a really interesting discussion about it before, and I think there's a really interesting scope there for a conception of self-forgiveness which would particularly apply. Also the lecturer was absolutely incredible and I was a bit in awe of her. In short, I had the best birthday in many many years which was very very cool.

I'm sorry to say it but as much as I love the egg, Garrus>Solas.

Sorry Solas but my spacedino boyfriend always has my six.

Garrus is the better boyfriend, he's honest, sweet, snarky as ****, will always have your back even if you stampede into hell, hella attractive facial scars, will do the ironing for you when it's your turn but you're cranky and tired and had a godawful day because he's so lovely, but Solas is the more intriguing choice and provides compelling drama. He's the guy who would get a Shakespearan tragedy named after him. It's a very Betty and Veronica comparison.

That said, if it were up to my Lavellan, this would be the plot of DA4:

6T6tWNi.jpg

It's totally 5am and I doubt anyone will see this until tomorrow but....

I just saw this on Tumblr. The idea that "Justice" in Anders may actually be Elgar'nan.

I think......it's fairly plausible. I'm not really down with the whole "Look, another Evanuris!" thing that seems to be happening all over the place, but this one seems to be the most legit of the ones I have seen such as Sera=ANdruil or Cole=Falon'Din.

And if it turned out to be true.....based on early statements of mine from yesterday.......I may or may  not find Elgar'nan hot.

*sigh*

Off to bed with that thought I suppose.

I loved Justice. And still love him. He was my second favourite from DA:A (DA2 pulled him down the rankings - he's competing with Sigrun and Velanna and Nathaniel, after all, you gotta work if you wanna stay top). He's the dorkiest DA character ever. Like, he's that one school prefect who actually took their job incredibly seriously to the point that it's endearing and sweet and precious. And he's inspiring. I know he actually made my canon Warden reconsider some of her ******* moves in the past, and pushed her into making her a better character.

So I have trouble imagining him as Elgar'nan. Elgar'nan always unnerved me - similar to Falon'din, it's the sort of god you'd rather not have to need, the sort of god you'd hope you'd never have to pray to. I was really disappointed how little screen time Justice got and how it was presented that he was this wholly corrupting, negative force on Anders, like he wasn't his own person with motives and goals and and achievements and failings, even if they were much more transparent than an actual mortal's. I honestly think Elgar'nan would be much nastier than him (although character bias is coming in here). I also think Elgar'nan would be magically knowledgeable enough to know how a spirit and a mortal can separate themselves after uniting in one body, thus ignoring all the Anders/Justice conflict in DA2.

More, I think a lot of the character arcs in DA2 were testing out future themes and plotlines. Anders/Justice looks at the value of justice and vengance and the relation between the two (which hugely forshadows the sort of role vengeful Mythal may play). Merrill has a lot of parallels to Solas - you have a bright, inventive mage who is possibly a tad too arrogant, forges their own path despite social and cultural pressures, possibly up making a tonne of mistakes in the process, has to learn to live with their actions, with regret. Isabela's actions introduce the Qunari into the plot of DA properly as a military force who will not hesitate to conquer Thedas and impose their restrictions on it if they feel it is necessary.

Because of your icon I heard all of that in Chole's voice.

You made my day.

I do my best

(ignore the hella dorky selfie, Max wasn't around to fix ruin it).

I enjoy having multiple protagonists too. I love making new PCs (it's why I have 4 Inquisitor's and 7 Wardens) but I also enjoy actually being able to have my PC finish their story before they disappear or retire, instead of having my new PC clean up after them. :?

^ Yessss. DA:O was sort of alright - the Warden (if they're alive) are tied to an organisation where they're doing a specific kind of work. I imagine their life would become a lot more boring once the blight was dealt with. DA2 does irritate me on this count though. There's not a great reason for Hawke to just disappear once the Templar-Mage war has been formally declared and all mages are now apostates.

I like how they tried to give more reasons to phase out the Inquisitor in Trespasser, but I think they've introduced a great gameplay mechanic (mechanical arm), and fantastic character motive (Solas) to bring them back in again :P. Oh well.

I got spoiled by reading about vallaslin somewhere out of pure curiosity and it said Solas = Fen'Harel. So I was spoiled right before doing What Pride Had Wrought. I was all WHAT?! WAIT, WHAT? *runs to do temple mission*. I had no idea about the breakup or him leaving though.

But having that knowledge while in the temple made me enjoy it more, I guess, hearing him bicker with Morrigan and give us snippets about the gods.

In a way, knowing he was Fen'Harel made the breakup easier on me the player, because I already knew more than I should have and thus I could imagine why he might be making that decision. But poor, confused Lavellan.

And then he left.

I got spoiled just before the Temple of Mythal. I already knew Flemeth = Mythal yonks before, wasn't fazed by it - though I accidentally read too far on a wiki article aaand boom. There suddenly went my hope of a happy resolution. So I wasn't that surprised by him ending it - regardless of Fen'Harel's motives, a relationship between a mortal and an immortal being is going to get complicated quickly. Solas had always been both hesitant and a tad reckless about the relationship, so I could understand it.

I think if he'd just ended it out of the blue I'd be like WHY (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

And probably proceeded to cry much more. I'm not sure if could have stomached finishing the game. Although the reveal would have been an absolute pleasure, I would have cackled with laughter (and proceeded to cry more).

Still reading TME.

Felassan.

I understand you now, guys. *sobs*

Edit: I had to stop reading in the middle of a scene, because it's just too painful to read about him.

*solidarity hugs*

The eluvian scenes where he's talking with Briala, where he's telling her to imagine all of Elvenhan in its splendour as well as imagining those who scrubbed its floors, are probably my favourite scenes with him. You get Felassan at his most honest, I think, there.

I don't know though...I don't want Leliana as part of my disbanded group. I have no confidence in her. Maybe that's not fair, but....something's always been wrong with her, let's admit it!

If she was killed in Origins, she is a lyrium ghost.  Maybe it's that :P

This is the hardest thing for me to get over, the whole spies thing. I am not getting over that, like, ever.

It always seems to be the spies thing that trips people up. Yet both the qunari and Solas had an extremely obvious advantage that ensured their success.

Their spies were elves.  (Or in the case of the qunari, mostly elves.)

Elves easily traverse the eluvian network.  They can blend into almost any environment.  Remember that in this world, a knife-ear is basically invisible unless they do something wrong or act up.  And if someone did try to follow up, the elves have easy alibis as war refugees.  The situation in southern Thedas is so chaotic that checking the story of one random elf, even if it had occurred to anyone, would have been very difficult.

For the qunari: We've known since at least Mark of the Assassin that the qunari seed spies goddamn everywhere.  The spies who converted in Kirkwall have been in place for at least five years as of Trespasser.  The ones from MoTA, at least ten years.  They're in every powerful organization in southern Thedas.  So as soon as the qunari get wind of the Inquisition, they send Iron Bull.  A goddamn spy, who told us he was a goddamn spy, and most of us welcomed him with open arms <_<  But of course, you can't rely on just one spy, especially if Bull is compromised.  So they seed more elves within the Inquisition.

What about Solas?  In Trespasser, it's obvious that the qunari were never any threat to Solas.  He could have murdered them all the moment they set foot in the network.  So I think his spies in the Inquisition were there to initially there to protect him and further his goals, but with friend/romanced quizzy, their purpose evolved.  By Trespasser, IMO they're also there to help, to look out for quizzy after Solas leaves. They likely stymied any attempts to search for Solas after he left, but they also found the qunari spies, reported back to Solas, and he used that knowledge to help.  They might even have told Solas about the Anchor acting up, giving him time to hatch the plan and save quizzy's life.

tl:dr; The Inquisition is not unique; every significant power in southern Thedas is riddled with spies.  But I think Solas's spies served a dual purpose.

@Shallow waters; That line with Felassan to Briala reminded me of something Atlas says in BioShock, something along the lines of "the thing about building a utopia, people always forget about who has to scrub the toilets".

I understood it when it happened, having been soiled right before the temple too, but I still didn't expect it. It still retained all of the feels and probably more because I could understand some of the reasons and begin to have my mind put it in context.

Still. And here we are. :)

The elven spy thing is actually what bothers me more than there was a security breach.

Part of what makes it work is the elves have convenient alibis of being war refugees, but I think another huge part of it is this series running theme of "elves/servants slip through undetected because they're considered beneath notice." Remember Friends of Red Jenny, and how they operate?

What bothers me though is my "canon" worldstate and my Inquisitor especially did everything they could to improve the lives of elves everywhere (sided with Fiona, Briala, Leliana as Divine...) and the world's status quo still says "knife-ears are beneath notice." So the elven spies still moved through the elf-led, elf-friendly Inquisition at Halamshiral undetected because everyone still thinks elven servants aren't worth looking twice at.

Glad to know that much as things change, they stay the same.  -_-

I want to throw Leliana out, I can't take her. She's incompetent and she's failed me. She is either in this with him or she's the most gods awful spymaster in Thedas.
