Hello Solas thread! Lurker here! I was going to keep my  status, but you summoned me out of shadows with that FMA talk. Best manga ever *shamelessly admits to never watching anime versions*

But to thread's topic. I admit, my first reaction while playing Trespasser was *sees option "I'm the one to kill Solas", picks it*, but I redid this part after I calmed down. I know there are different reactions to his Trespasser appearance. Personally, I find him even more interesting now (not like he wasn't interesting before).

Also, I'm on my way to sacrifice Lavellan to Dread Wolf... ekhm... I mean, romane Solas. Not my first Solasmancer, but first one to play thru DLCs (unfortunately I lost my previous Solasmancer). Either way... My Faye Lavellan:

Spoiler

So, once again. Hello Solas thread! Lurker here! I'll most likely never be able to keep up with your posting speed, but I'll try to post from time to time (key word, try).

Watch Brotherhood if you're going to watch one.  If you're like me and love the manga then the 2003 anime will probably just annoy you.  Also, watch it in Japanese if you can.  Romi Paku as Ed is just amazing.

And anath ara, lethellen!

Aye he expected it to cause an explosion that would be powerful enough to kill Corypheus on opening it at the very least. I doubt he foresaw Corypheus taking it right into the middle of hundreds of hundreds of innocent bystanders before opening it though.

I keep focusing on the 'it wasn't suppose to be this way' line.

*clings to TO flag*

Taking pics of the sliders are the only way to share them, unfortunately.

So, I'm curious about who everyone romanced in other bioware games and out of all of those romances who is your favorite:

DA: Alistair

DA2: Anders

DAI: Solas and Cullen

ME: Kaidan

ME2: nobody/Jacob (So, in my defense my first BW game was ME2. I was new to the whole romance thing and Jacob was the only one I found attractive. Anyway, despite how creepy femshep sounded when she talked to him and how awful their sex scene was, Shep persevered. And, was dumped in the next game, lol. But she didn't care as she was going to dump him for Kaidan anyway. In all subsequent playthroughs of ME2 Shep remained single and pined for Kaidan. )

ME3: Kaidan

My favorites are Alistair, Kaidan and Solas. But, Solas is taking the lead as all the drama is giving the feels. We'll see how DA4 goes!

DAO: Alistair/Surana (canon A), Leliana/Surana (canon B - same Surana as canon A so f!Surana obviously), Leliana/f!Brosca (other canon), Morrigan/Mahariel (unplayed, but favourite Morrigan pairing).

DA2: mage!f!Hawke/Fenris (friendship, mage path - canon A and B.), mage!f!Hawke/Merrill (rival, mage path - other canon)

DAI: Solas/Lavellan (canon A), Sera/Adaar (canon B.) Haven't picked for my Brosca or Mahariel canon yet.

ME: Liara

ME2: Liara (flirted with Kelly prior to doing LotSB in order to have my fish fed and returned in ME3)

ME3: Liara

All of these are my favourite romances.  Zev is probably the only DAO romance I have no interest in and that makes me sad because he's the only one to get a happily ever after with the Warden.

Quick question for fanfic reasons: Do you think Solas expected Corypheus to blow up the Conclave when the magister unlocked his orb?

Even if he expected an explosion, I don't think he expected anything of the magnitude that has happened. The explosion created the Breach and for the most part Solas seemed to be far more interested in closing it than retrieving his orb - so even if we assume that eventually the orb was still the key to unravel the world as it is (even with Anchor gone), doing anything that would tear the Veil the way it did likely wasn't part of the plan at any measure.

It's also hard to tell whether he expected that the Conclave and the ritual Corypheus has devised... was anything Solas or his agents have suggested, or was is something Cory managed to devise on his own - he does say that the ritual was years in the planning in Haven... and I don't really think Conclave was planned all those years in advance?

I have to wonder what was more important for Corypheus to complete this ritual: being at the Temple Of Sacred Ashes, or sacrificing the Divine - I think that's the crucial question.

IMO, considering that the Temple was a place of immense power, it was probably more important for unlocking the orb, with Justinia picking this spot for the Conclave being all kinds of lucky coincidence (or unlucky, considering that it brought a lot of people there, including potential Heralds, that eventually defeated the magister).

That still leaves the question of whether Solas knew in detail what Corypheus planned to do - but he tells to Inky throughout Inquisition that he never thought that the Tevinter magister would be capable to unlock or use the orb (probably not just in a sense that he unlocked it and it didn't kill him, but he tapped into its powers and knowledge contained within) and that the explosion itself was an accident: so I assume that neither Corypheus, nor Solas expected anything that would level a mountaintop and kill everyone in proximity.

I...I...may have finished some version of that scene that was troubling me so much last night.

May.

in 20 minutes I might want to tear it apart, but I'm posting this to point at later. <_<

Yay! *applauds*

(I've romanced everyone in origins, Merrill and Isabella in 2 and Solas in Inq on other characters tho)

ME:1- Ashley

ME:2- No one

ME:3- Ashley

Huh. So either option's still feasible.

Guess I'll just write both then, and see which one fits better later.

DAO: Alistair

DA2: Anders

DAI: Cullen, Solas, Blackwall and Iron Bull

(if Cullen and Solas weren't gated behind races, Blackwall and Iron Bull wouldn't be on this list)

As for my favourites... DAI's were the best IMO. Among them... I would say Cullen.

I prefer Solas as BFF of my characters, Blackwall as that reliable guy with shield and Bull as my fights&drinks buddy.

And anath ara, lethellen!

It's been a long time since I watched anime (with small exception: Haikyuu!! when it was airing last year). I don't think I have it in me to sit down and watch one again. I'm manga person. But if I ever decided to watch FMA anime version, it would be Brotherhood.

Oh, yes! Romances :D

DA:O = Alistair & fTabris (canon), Zevran & fCousland (second PT)

DA II = Fenris & fHawke (canon), Sebastian & fHawke (second PT) (That second Hawke was nuts)

DA:I = Solas & fLavellan (canon), Dorian & mTrevelyan (second PT)

There was also an Anders romance somewhere in there, and my next Lavellan is romancing Cullen. But I'm not sure if I'll ever use them in the keep :)

Mass Effect:

Kaidan. I don't even know why. It just kinda happened.

I think almost all of my ME playing friends who played f!Shepard romanced Garrus, except one who comes to mind who went for Kaidan. For my Shepard, Garrus was her best friend, Tali was her little sister, and Liara was her love. But it all comes down to preference and what works for your character.

That's what I keep hearing. Everyone loves Garrus (I don't think I've seen any DA character so widely popular, except maybe Varric), but apparently you can't romance him till ME2. I have to play ME to get to ME2, and in ME we meet Kaidan... and my Shepards always fall fast and hard for Kaidan. I can't decide whether to just give in and romance him, or just skip ME and go straight to ME2 so I won't be tempted. (I bought the trilogy, which is why they're all registered to my account even though I haven't played all them.)

I love Kaidan. Even though a lot of people don't or have reasonable complaints about the writing for story purposes, I really do. He's grounded, he's compassionate, he's a really good soldier, he's also not afraid to speak up and call Shepard out if he feels very strongly about his principles. Lots of people call him boring but I love having this very down to earth guy around in this sea of alien badassery and extremes.

I had to buy that comic DLC for ME2 that lets you pick which ME options you want so you can skip ME. I don't remember what it's called. And I hope this made sense...I'm super tired. Anyway..I had to buy that DLC so Wrex wouldn't die.

Hmm, and now that I've done a couple of small edits to that last bit, it might actually be a good way to end. Though there is more I want to follow it with, I think maybe turning this into two stories happening one right after the other, might work. Still deciding.

I was able to finish that scene while listening to Fiona Apple's cover of Across The Universe. This is now going on my saved writing playlist.

I've been thinking about what else to write post-Trespasser, and filling in some gaps as to her experience with Solas at the end of that DLC. I guess replaying that part last night will help (not that I haven't watched video of it too many times to count, but they were not my PC). Still, it feels nice to be unstuck for the moment.

Looking forward to reading the finished thing. It actually makes it even more fun to read everyone's stuff when I know the kind of struggles that went into writing it, and then I read the final result to reveal what exactly it was all about. Enjoy being unstuck!

I do find it different to play a scene with my pc vs watching a video of it, even if the choices they made are almost exactly like mine. I'm always more immersed with my pc, even if I've played the scene countless times. (Not that I've done this with the Trespasser scene. I totally don't have a save right before it starts, so that I can turn on the game and go right to that over and over again. Nope. )

They knew, so they gave us all our last Trespasser save right before that scene.   Though this time I took the "Thanks...I guess?" option to get the snarky castle comment. Though I think I prefer it the first way I did it, when he responds with saying whatever you accomplished, you earned. it sort of fits, sadly, with his very low expectations of people, and you proving him wrong.

I'm still not sure whether to split this or keep writing.

I go for snarky 80% of the time, including the castle comment. Only sometimes I choose the goody response when I think the situation calls for it, and very sparingly I choose the aggressive options.

This is just my personality, but if I have even the slightest inclinations to split chapters, I split chapters. I actually did that with my latest chapter, there's a piece of dialogue that used to be there that I decided to leave for a little later in the story when she and Solas know each other better. I seem to prefer writing everything shorter and serving everything in very small chunks. Sometimes I actually worry that the way I write is too terse.

Just catching up~

Sorry to interrupt the sharing of fiction, but I have a question for you!

So that "Solas was literally a Pride demon spirit who became a meatbag for Mythal" theory is really popular.

And as much as I'm usually like "meeeeeh, I'll wait to play the game and see" I actually think this one has a lot of merit and would pose this question.

If you were originally a spirit, but decided becoming a human would be cool, what spirit were you?

I'm calling obnoxiousness curiosity for me!

I wanted to see what the fleshy world was all about!

Oh, and your Lavellan too (or canon Inquisitor!)

I'm calling probably curiosity too or naivety (I'm so mean to her) a spirit of vigilance or something else equally bad*ss sounding!

Sidenote: My fingers are really cold. Stupid computers in basement.

For me, I would either be empathy/compassion or rage depending on the time of day. (Not a morning person!)

Nia would be.. Probably wisdom or endurance. She isn't very physically imposing but she has a very strong spirit. I guess she would have to to go through a romance with Solas.  :crying:

Tell your brother-in-law that a random on the internet agrees with you.  Manga>FMAB>FMA.

Oh, and subbed>dubbed.

I have a thing about Ed's English VA.  And that thing is that I cannot stand the sound of his voice.

I kind of like Vic Mignogna's voice for Edward Elric. But only for Ed. I can't really stand it for any other character. (*cough*Tamaki Suou) I watched Ouran with subtitles and haven't been able to watch the dub for that reason.

ME3: Kaidan

My favorites are Alistair, Kaidan and Solas. But, Solas is taking the lead as all the drama is giving the feels. We'll see how DA4 goes!

Origins: Alistair!  <3  I want to try Zevran if I can ever get past flirting with Alistair.

DA2: I'm playing it for the first time, but I'm planning on Fenris. DA2 is the only one I'm not going into blindly. :/

DAI: Solas of course. I did have a fluffy Cullen PT though. It was nice! I enjoyed the makeout button.

ME1: Kaidan even though I couldn't really stand him.  (I like him more than Ashley though so he lived.) I want to try Liara some day.

ME2: Garrus  <3

ME3: Garrus!!!

I think I tend to go for the snark when it feels right but I'm probably about 80% top choice and 20% snark, never aggressive. (IRL I just cried over an article about a dog being adopted so yeah, I am very soft :P and don't really enjoy or connect that well with the overly aggressive responses. Curt/pragmatic I can maybe do, but you just never know how they'll come out, especially the first play. )

I set up the beginning of this story to essentially culminate in something entirely different but the place it stands out now could be a nice, fluffy way to end and then I can pick it up again very soon following. Decisions.

Yeah... I'm starting to think maybe I should just stop fighting it and embrace the Kaidan love for ME.

Problem is, I hear Kaidan doesn't show up in ME2 but does in ME3, which means I have to go through a whole game without him. Worse, if I start to like Garrus during ME2, I'll either have to resist or cheat until ME3. I don't want to have to wait that long. Why can't he be there for all three games? In fact, why is Shepard the protagonist for all three games but they play Russian Roulette with the companions, so that one might be available for 1 and 3 but another might just be available for 2 and 3 and you have to decide if you want to romance the first one you come across, or wait till the second one, but live without them for a whole freaking game...?

DA romances are much easier in that it's one protagonist and one romance per game.

Yeah, I heard of that. Problem is I haven't decided if I want to skip ME yet. If I decide to keep playing ME, I don't want to spoil myself too much. If I decide to skip it, then I have to do a lot of research on what each decision actually entails so I can make an informed choice (the way I did for DA2 in the Keep.)

Keeping this mildly on-topic (Solas), is it just me, or does seems like those who romance Solas also tended to have romanced Alistair and Anders (or occasionally Fenris)? 0_0

Okay... here's an interesting thing that I've just found out about - a piece of dialogue I've never heard before between Morrigan and Solas in Temple Of Mythal.

Morrigan: And interesting inscription: “Submit to law unyielding.”
Inquisitor: “Law unyielding”?
Morrigan: Perhaps this is some manner of courtroom? I cannot say
Morrigan: The ancient elves considered Mythal a god of justice.
Solas: To call it “justice” is simplistic. Mythal was properly invoked by those seeking vengeance.
Morrigan: Oh? Are they truly so different?
Solas: To those who followed her, yes.

audio:

Which kinda makes me wonder - if Mythal was a god (spirit?) of specific kind of justice - vengeance or perhaps holy wrath, I wonder if her probable compulsion to enact vengeance on Evanuris stems from her own personal feelings of betrayal, or because she thinks the world itself must be avenged?

She tells this herself to Inqusitor: "She was betrayed as I was betrayed... as the world was betrayed!".

I mean... if my suspicions are right and there's more to collective consciousness (as the story suggests that there is) Mythal may as well be compelled by her very own nature at the core of her being (vengeance, retribution, holy wrath?) to do something to enact her justice on those that wronged the world itself.

Also - this means that Mythal... might as well be elvhen equivalent of Greek Nemesis O_O!
(which would be fitting, considering that Daimones like Nemesis are actually spirits and personifications of concepts and emotions, which is closer what spirits/elves/elvhen gods are compared to Olympians)

It's also intriguing that Solas sounds pretty... intense, especially with the last "To those who followed her, yes.". I don't think this is just something that can be waved away as a thing that can be explained by him being annoyed at Morrigan or being at the Temple, since he didn't sound as annoyed when they discussed Andruil or Falon'Din... Did Solas followed her or initially invoked her, because he sought vengeance himself?

I suppose it could be explained that he saw injustice done to the world or those the Evanuris have wronged, but I wonder if that was the only reason, or was there something much earlier on?

Maybe we're really good at sniffing out plot relevant LIs? Honestly, I am not sure, but it is common, yeah.

I would recommend you play ME1. I think it's the best of the series for a few reasons. It is the most RPG out of them, the least linear, and I enjoyed the exploration. You might get a bit bonkers with the Mako but I like it. Depends how completionist you want to play it. One thing that helps is to have the wiki open for each planet, showing the mapped location of everything. Then you can set map targets and go.

And yes, for reasons, the only romance you can conceivably continue across three games is Liara. Though you can only continue with her in ME2 DLC, so that means, just like with Kaidan, I romanced no one out of the new companions in the main game.

If you want to start with Kaidan in ME, you can decide in ME2 what you want to do, if you'd like to move on or wait.

I kind of like Vic Mignogna's voice for Edward Elric. But only for Ed. I can't really stand it for any other character. (*cough*Tamaki Suou) I watched Ouran with subtitles and haven't been able to watch the dub for that reason.

I have no idea what it is about that man's voice, but best I can describe the way I feel is he's the reverse Garth David-Lloyd to me.  I can listen to that man say anything whereas I don't want to hear Vic Mignogna say anything at all.  But it's just me.  Doesn't help that Ed is the first character to speak in the 2003 anime (which I saw first and later found out that the parts of it I had loved all came from the manga and the parts I hated were original to the anime) so the first voice I ever heard in FMA was Romi Paku's.

I cannot picture Tamaki with Vic's voice at all.
