The reason he speaks around this - the words and phrases both the nightmare and he use are pretty simple(aside from harellan) and would be something a Dalish inquisitor should know. So he has to pull a Solas and speak obtusely so as not to give himself away.

Strange ranting, incoming. Feel free to ignore tl:dr.

The loss of agency over Solas' spy network, within the Inquisition. Currently, that is my latest smh I am dealing with. Riding the waves, doesn't seem to stop. May need Dramamine. (hmmm - interesting that "drama" is in the name of that pharmaceutical. Coincidence? I think not. )

Should explain myself a bit. I have played through Trespasser twice, so far - first with one of my Lavellan's, then with my Bullmancing Cadash. After that first play through, I kinda despised Solas. And I think that bothered me the most. Rather disconcerting really liking a character, then feeling compelled to....mmmm, not. Compelled may seem like a strange word, but when the word vomit kept falling from Solas' perfectly plump lips, it felt like not having a "choice", to still like him(even though that is ridiculous. Of course I have a choice. Ahem.).

Now with some time and knowing full well, we still don't have the full picture, my viewpoint has altered somewhat. We have yet to know much of his past or his plans for the future (dammit all! didn't want this much of a cliffhanger. ) Recognizing that there are many unanswered questions, has allowed me to stave off some of my initial reaction. I have never placed Solas on a pedestal, so him being wrong, misguided, or even plain stupid at times, just makes him more relatable. Oddly enough. It also makes it easier to not outright despair over his character. But I digress.

My original topic, is based on the strange effect I have had, knowing that he had a spy network amongst the Inquisition. Though, considering his now revealed role in the Masked Empire, it makes sense. (It should be noted - I never read the book.)
Between Leliana, a Tal Vashoth Bull (or even a Qun Bull, if we are speaking strictly of the base game), and if you play a more aware type character (which strangely enough, my two Trespasser play throughs were with my most capable Lavellan and my Lyrium smuggling, cool-as-a-cumber Cadash) it makes the situation with his spies.....unsettling.

Don't misunderstand! I definitely think the unexpected, not everything in the control of our PC's, and consequence of choice, should always be a part of the game. But this being tossed out at the end of the game (epilogue), makes subsequent play throughs less appealing. Most meta-knowledge I am fairly good at putting aside, even dismissing for the sake of gameplaying. But this, this has me spending more time examining why we are not given more opportunities to examine the very organization we lead. Or question just how loyal or useful Leliana, Bull....hell - even Varric - truly are. It takes the wind out of my sails, proverbially speaking.

Bah! This is probably why I have started playing MP - something I have never done before. Truth is, I will probably continue to flip-flop on the Egg, till the next game comes out. And as always, the above is merely my reaction to the material. Just my current .02.

Well, let's face it - what seems to motivate him more to do what he thinks needs to be done is his overwhelming sense of guilt, rather than pride itself.

 

As for Cole - I don't really think it's that confusing, if what I think they're doing is correct.

 

Like in our world, the concepts and emotions (like Compassion, Love, Desire, Pride, etc) AREN'T just one, fixed thing that can be easily categorized - even if we try, just for the sake of quick identification. They can mean many things or can be pulled in different directions. Same with spirits IMO - the emotions or concepts they embody lie on a complex spectrum scale. It's not just Compassion - Despair or Wisdom - Pride. There are other directions they can be pulled, especially if they gain enough nuance, or intersect or resonate with other concepts.

 

 

I think instead of visualizing the whole thing as separate, linear graphs, we should think about it sort of like emotion wheel.

IMO, the spirits (like, regular, simple spirits) sort of embody the purest idea or a concept - in that sense they're pure and light, but also fragile. They don't have enough complexity/personality to grasp things beyond their narrow concept of the idea they like to stick to, which is why they can also be easily twisted.

 

The more they develop personality and understanding, the stronger they become, and while it helps to understand things more, it also 'muddles' the original concept - expanding it, resonating with other things. The more they understand the world, the more things become complex, but also muddled, until the initial concept they've stuck to becomes more of a driving force or strongest personality trait, rather than a thing that defines everything they do. And one point or another a simple spirit likely becomes so complex, that they likely cross the vague boundary between a regular spirit and a person.

 

It's likely important that a person shouldn't forget what lies at their core, so they could retain what makes them THEM, and not become twisted, but they have other things that define them as well.

 

This is likely why Solas may be defined by both his need to gather and share knowledge, or think that only he can do something to save the elves, but it's no less important for him to be compassionate or motivated by his sense of justice.

 

In the same way Nightmare may be a being that ever crossed to our world, but became utterly complex in itself, that Despair or anything else is too simple of a concept to describe it in its whole. It's more than that, yet at its core likely lies a very twisted and mostly forgotten understanding of Compassion.

 

 

Ah yeah that's a great way to look at it, and the graph was fascinating to look at too! I always felt Cole was more than one trait. And I agree about Solas. If he could almost give it all up for love, it's not too late to redeem him, but he needs to let go and that's nearly impossible at the moment.

Several of Spirit!Cole's lines when adventuring and at Halamshiral reference Solas and how worried he is about him.  There's one Halamshiral line where he says he's going back to the Fade when everything is over because there's a friend there who is hurting and needs to be reminded of who he is.

 

Oh, Cole ... Argh, I so badly wanted to take him with me in Trespasser, it's just the fights were kicking my butt and he's squishy. I should just have lowered the difficulty and taken him It's good to know he felt that way. Cole, I'm counting on you!

I noticed as lot of people say that about Cole, but he was my most reliable in Dragon fights, and I thought that was a bit odd because he's a DW Rouge and they are usually squishy in those battles. He and my Trevelyan were the last ones standing in the final fight before seeing Solas too. Bull is the one I kept losing in battle. I wonder what I did... 

 

And can I say it's so not fun fighting without Solas? I can always count on being protected 100% without telling him to use Barrier and keep forgetting that in the post-game. Dorian's not bad, but Solas seems to do just what is needed in every fight. I never have to look after him.

This is really interesting. I haven't tried to make a character with children, but I imagine they'd add a lot to the story and influence choices. How do you think having children influences Lavellan's relationship with Solas? How do you think it influences her reaction to him revealing his true identity and his plan?

Well, Luca is already fairly cautious, it's one of the reasons she's still alive, but she also has a protective streak a mile wide. Her kids come first, no question, so she doesn't let them get within ten miles of the conflict. They will probably never meet Solas, unless he and Luca both survive the next two games. They do affect her decisions insofar as, what world do I want my kids to live in, how can I make that happen with the power I've been given - but, she knows this thing with the Veil and the Evanuris and the Titans is so much bigger than just her family. She wants what is best for them, and that, for the time being, is keeping them away from her; Solas knows about them and agrees with her judgment.

She's learned so much, met Mythal, fallen in love with the Dread Wolf. With all that she's learned, she's not going to be able to go home and resume a normal life. The world is changing in incomprehensible ways and the only way to protect her family is to get into the middle of it, because she's been given that opportunity. She will kill Solas if she has to - but she knows him - he doesn't want to hurt her or her family specifically, in fact he despises himself for the fact that she and her family do not have the lives they should have had if the Veil didn't exist. He wants her to prove him wrong, wishes that there were any other way. So she's going to show him that there is, or die trying.

 

Solas is going down a path that requires a sort of ruthless pragmatism, which she is also entirely capable of. She has a couple of advantages over him I think - one is kind of a meta thing, that the world that they live in is influenced by spirits, by intentions, by magic - if your will is strong enough you can overpower basically any force. Thus, the fact that she has family and friends to protect - which includes him - it's very personal, and he only has a close relationship with one person - her (someone who he does not actually want to kill). His duty is an abstract thing, because the scale of his mistake is so large. Also, she was a merciful, helpful Inquisitor - she has friends and allies at every level of society all across Thedas. Once the Inquisition is disbanded, people don't forget that she gave them assistance, or like Mistress Poulin and Servis she offered them opportunities to make amends, or be useful instead of dead. Her power isn't the mark anymore, it's her mobs of friends. 

 

Luca believes she can find another way, a third option. She completely understands his perspective, his duty, his pride, his desire to save his people, but she's a bit more ambitious than he is, and wants to prove that she can protect all of them.

 

If Luca were a spirit, she'd be one of Conviction - Faith but more aggressive (and maybe not always positive or realistic, but unwavering and determined). Basically, she will win by sheer force of stubbornness in her belief that things can be changed, are not beyond hope. She'd make a great shonen manga hero.

Yes and some of the stuff Cole says people associated with Solas were these ones:

The guardian spirits stayed. Not bound but biding. Because he asked. He knows how to speak so spirits listen.

 

The spirits have fled. Flying. Fluttering. Fast to the farthest Fade. They're afraid of the Veil tearing again.

 

His friend had to die. Because he thought they were people. A slow arrow breaks in the sad wolf's jaws.

 

He broke the dreams to stop the old dreams from waking. The wolf chews its leg off to escape the trap.

So......I was sitting around thinking about "Well, what would my Lavellan do after figuring out how to have a sweet arcane warrior spirit arm?" And I thought...I know, she starts going around exploring elvhen ruins trying to piece together any information she can about Solas and the Evanuris in order to figure out the new question of "How does one stop an ancient powerful elf who can roll his eyes and turn people into stone and completely alter the very fabric of space and time?"

 

Then I was like...OOoOoooOooo, interesting little crazy thing that could happen could be Lavellan taking that time travel amulet Alexius made and seeing if she could travel back to ancient times to learn some crazy useful information. Because why not at this point right? I mean, we figure this stuff out or the world ends, so what is there to lose really?

 

Then I was thinking all like....what if my Lavellan got caught? Because she wouldn't want to run into Solas....that could cause problems if he found out that she does a little time hop in order to figure out how to stop him in the future.

 

Then I thought, "Oh crap, what if she got caught? Without vallaslin?" I mean, I imagine that if Solas could remove them...the Evanuris probably had spells to make them show back up to see who a slave belonged to.

 

Then this leads to my Lavellan being put into the hands of June.

 

And every single ancient elf we have seen so far is hot.

 

And what if June turned out to be a pretty nice guy. Like yeah...he has slaves, but he treats them well or something. Not justifying slavery...just stating in perspective like how Dorian explains slavery in Tevinter.

 

And come on, Lavellan would be this super cute little anomaly that just showed up in his world. I mean, if she can draw the attention of one ancient elven god, why wouldn't it happen with another?

 

My Lavellan is doomed in every single situation I theorize. I SUCK at headcanon. Officially.

Hopefully we can then change his mind for real. And maybe (in my mind at least) get a sort of happy ending with Lavellan saying something in the likes of "You know, for being a former spirit of Wisdom - you really are quite stupid" *END SCENE*

This will do nothing and because you taught him to keep trying if he fails, he will do that. We need to cut him off like we did with Corypheus. Have him with nothing left and then try and reach him when he's lost it all.

Of course I had to replace him in Trespasser, and while it's fun watching Dori cast purple spells and making enemies run around in panic, he still requires more babysitting and frankly, I just prefer a good ol' Veilstrike or Stonefist. Solas definitely left a hole in my party

Thanks to another post on here, I realized Silverite was the key for my Cole being safe lol

 

So it's not just me? I never realized how much I needed him until he was gone. Especially in JOH when I replaced him with Dorian. Solas seems to have a mind of his own and knows what to do without altering behavior. My Inquisitor is always safe. If anyone touches her he freezes them, protects her or uses Stonefist to knock them away. He also using Fade Step to reach her when she's overwhelmed. My Trevelyan and him were definitely BFF's.

I might be miscounting because of my dyscalculia so please feel free to ignore me, but DA:I starts 9:41 and Trespasser is 9:44 so 3 years, which is less than 18->24, and DA:O starts 9:30 so to 9:44 = 14 years, which is less than 17->34? If it's headcanon about timescales please disregard me!!

If you have problems with Cole, I would recommend giving him Savage Thorn or anything that can generate guard on hit. Or take warrior with Horn of Valor and it's new upgrade. Even Bull becomes reliable with that.

 

You don't get how much you miss Solas until you're not Rift Mage yourself. He was my constant party member in both Qunquisitor and Dwarfquisitor pts. When I got to play Trespasser, I swapped him for Dorian. Yes, you're fabulous. Yes, you can use Revival on yourself. But no one can set combos like Solas 

He and my dwarf lady (dw Tempest) were the best Shatter combo out there.

Wait, isn't DAI exactly 10 years after DAO, then game events are three years total, then Trespasser starts 2 years after that?

DA:O and DAII start in 9:30 and DA:I starts in 9:41 and Trespasser starts in 9:44. DA:I taking 3 years was a misunderstanding of a comment DGaider made when asked, instead of ingame time passing it referred to real-world game development time, he clarified as such. DA:I takes about a year since Trespasser is 2 years after and is 9:44.

 

BUT feel free to check that/inform me I'm incorrect because I have a numerical learning difficulty L O L so my word is about as useful as a fish on a bicycle.
