Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Takes a while to really get going, but when it does...

Codex Alera, by Jim Butcher. The first book is decent, and every book after is amazing. Also, not your stereotypical fantasy fare.

The Dresden Files, also by Jim Butcher. More modern, but definitely fantasy and definitely an epic.

The Mistborn Trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson. 

The Stormlight Archives,also by Sanderson. (Unusually, it's a massive cross-over between all of his other epic fantasy books, so I'd advise reading them first.)

 

I haven't read them yet, but I've been meaning to start both the Dresden Files and Codex Alera. I love the way the latter came about:

 

The inspiration for the series came from a bet Jim was challenged to by a member of the Del Rey Online Writer’s Workshop. The challenger bet that Jim could not write a good story based on a lame idea, and Jim countered that he could do it using two lame ideas of the challenger’s choosing. The “lame” ideas given were “Lost Roman Legion", and “Pokémon”.^[1]

I haven't read it yet, but I've been meaning to start both the Dresden Files and Codex Alera. I love the way the latter came about:

And The Dresden Files came from him trying to get one over on his writing instructor, because the way she kept suggesting he write stories, he thought was derivative garbage. So he made Storm Front's first chunk to show just how awful it would be. In other news, Book Sixteen is coming out sometime. 

 

As for the RL situation,

I got e-mails from both of my teachers. The math teacher is letting me retake the test at 7AM tomorrow, and the history one is as sick as I am and just said, "Eh, see you guys Tuesday,"

Hopefully everyone will be safe. I'll just stay home with soup and juice trying to be non-sick myself.
(I normally leave at 7 to get down there in time for 8:50, so this should be fun.)

Also, dem Petyr puns.  While I hate how they made certain aspects of his personality very upfront very early on, and wished they had gone with the more gradual reveal of the books, his actor is good enough that I only occasionally power-whine about it.

I've never understood the Avaar armor though. It visually confuses me! Is the armor supposed to be covered in mud or paint or something? I just...I don't know what to make of it.

I agree XD I actually used it only since my char is still in haven and I got it as ''better'' armor for a while haha XD I also don't understand the coloring.. I personally do not like the coloring. I will create amazing armor for her when I get to skyhold. I am trying to get the trophy of getting in Haven lvl 5 haha

The fact that series is so long now is one reason I've been reluctant to begin.

Isn't this still possible though? I mean, I know current main theory's Solas was a spirit first, called by Mythal to guard her until he burned her vallaslin off his face. But while he was still her guardian, I wager he did have Mythal's slaves serving him food and doing his laundry at the very least.

 

Unless Mythal never had slaves? Only willing priests and servants and the like?

It was a general threat to all unis and colleges in the city, they doubled security, and we're behind heavy doors with card access, which are off-limits to undergrads, etc. I'm not too worried.

Before reading Feynite's works, my favorite Solas fanfic was "Crystal White" by BreLakor. That was a really great fanfic, but her portrayal of ancient Solas as someone who have once raped his slaves is just too disturbing. I can't imagine Solas ever going that far. Sometimes I think Feynite's Solas is a bit childish, but overall it's a much more sympathetic and endearing version of Solas.

I am also joining the no da'len camp. Just, egh, no. Acceptable with my male Lavellan, because, y'know, Solas is actually the mentor figure in that playthrough.

 

Cee: Wheel of Time is very long, but it's finished. The Dresden Files is long, but unfinished. (Total of 24 books planned, I think.) Codex Alera is only six books and it's finished. The original Mistborn trilogy is done, but there's a planned trilogy of trilogies, because of course there is. And Stormlight Archives are about a thousand pages a book, with two of them out, and about ten planned out, I think.

I don't actually subscribe to the Solas-was-a-spirit first theory at this time. I want to know more about the relationship between Mythal and Solas and Solas' position in ancient elven society prior to beginning his rebellion.

 

I'm not making any statements on what is or isn't possible (like, there's nothing saying Solas IS or IS NOT dom, as another example), just listing common Solas/Solavellan fanfic tropes that aren't my jam.

The childishness doesn't bother me. He is much younger in that fic, and I also think the fact that he isn't the same Solas that we meet in DA:I adds a lot to the grief aspect of it, and I like the way it fleshes out how time travel can't solve everything. Because while yes, Lavellan technically is still with Solas, no he still isn't the same man she fell in love with.

I couldn't continue Crystal White for exactly that reason too. It just didn't feel like Solas to me. I really love Faynite's latest even thought I don't completely agree with her timeline of events in elvhenan. Young pup Solas is adorkable and realistically portrayed I think. You see the man he can become, even behind the general immaturity. Also, I love her concept of Dreaming birth vs Waking birth to explain spirits becoming elves.

I could never risk my precious flies. They took so long to breed. I will fight to defend them from intruders. But I have a spray bottle full of 70% ethanol, and I'm not afraid to use it. 

 

We should probably stop discussing this though, soo...

 

Solas uses da'len in the beginning of my fic, because he also uses it in game, and I think it fits his attitude in the beginning. If they're actually in a relationship, I would find it uncomfortable too.
