hello thread. I started my masters today and already have forty pages of early twentieth century german philosophy to read for tomorrow ;__; suffice to say activity is on the dowwwwn.
Well, that will surely occupy you for a while. But I think the blanket fort is also effective on busy real life too sometimes.
I agree that Trespasser essentially showing that the Solas we got is, more or less, Solas though he does have the other legacy he seems to have picked up more eagerly once and now, in a more resigned manner.
Mass Effect actually made me reconsider most of my sexual preferences and criteria in partner given that I was pretty happy to bang a space lizard because his voice was hot.
Solas is relatively normal when I think about it in that context.
He is, isn't he? DA, Mass Effect and other games were a factor in making some things click with my own sexuality-related pondering. It's common enough, with the influence of media of all types (and ongoing calls for greater representation - this is why it matters).
The trickster god is a powerful archetype, so I'm not surprised that it turns up as often as it does. I think some love for Tom Hiddleston's Loki is also getting projected onto Solas. Tragic Byronic bad boy and all that
I have no doubt that's some sort of influence somewhere on people. But it's unfortunate when people misread a character or venture into something just bizarrely OOC/non-canon unless they're clear from the start that's where they're going.
Yeah, I couldn't read Crystal White for that reason
I love fanfiction, but it's a little disappointing how after much the writers went out of their way to stress that Fen'Harel in the flesh is a quiet dorky elf with strong moral principles who denies his divinity, rather than the feared trickster god of legend, people seem to write him as the latter more than the former.
I have no trouble with a portrayal of a more apathetic/ignorant Solas, but the portrayal of

rape
is just too much. It's hard to forgive something like that or understand how someone can be so ignorant as to not realize that that's what they were doing.

I could be remembering incorrectly, but wasn't Crystal White a prompt? There's a lot of crazy prompts out there, and them making any particular sense or following canon seems the least of anyone's concern.

Well, the portrayal in Crystal White was a bit disturbing, but not nearly as bad as the extra story she wrote afterwards called "Pitch Black" which expanded upon how cruel Fen'Harel was in the past. Reading that kind of ruined the original Crystal White for me.

I'd honestly never heard of it before this thread today and it sounds incredibly disturbing. I've peeked at kmeme once or twice out of sheer curiosity and um....yeah.
Seb at least has the whole (former) bad boy thing going for him. But Alistair? The guy who kisses you when you've been showing clear interest and then asks if that was 'too fast'? Who has to go away until the blushing stop when you try and seduce him too early? Mr 'It's been 10 years and he still gets that 'I can't believe a pretty girl likes me' voice when he talks about her' Alistair?
Dom!Alistair is just so hilarious to me.
omg lol I can't imagine Dom!Alistair at all XD It's so... opposite to who he is!
Now Dom!Solas... I can see it just from those dominating kisses loooord have mercy. I bet younger Solas would've been a sight to see. Older Solas has restraint and smoothness. Young Solas? He probably would've seduced her right after she closed her first rift. Sheesh.

I feel like I'm the only person that wouldn't care if I found out he'd had slaves. Don't get me wrong, it's awful and slavery is wrong. But if he came from a system like that where slavery was just the status quo and he was able to pull himself out of that mindset, to realize himself that it was wrong and to standing up and committing to ending that system? That's amazing and I have tons of respect for anyone who does something like that. Someone who comes from privilege and realizes it and then uses it to subvert the system is pretty awesome, IMO.
It's certainly a different story than if you imagine him either a former slave, or a part of the lower class who was used to seeing slavery as an injustice. I mean, I'm good with either one. What matters to me is that he tries to do the right thing as far as this issue is concerned. Whether he does it the right way...well, that is why there are 5272 pages of Solas discussion.

So, I have been hunting for a really epic fantasy series to start reading and was wondering if any folks here had any good suggestions.
I am in need of a new book addiction.
^.^ This is from many pages ago, but I recommend you look at this site for new fantasy books! They have a top 25 fantasy book list, but also many other more specific ones like top urban fantasy, top romantic fantasy, top Tolkien clones, or YA fantasy! Everyone interested in fantasy books should check it out!
Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Takes a while to really get going, but when it does...
Codex Alera, by Jim Butcher. The first book is decent, and every book after is amazing. Also, not your stereotypical fantasy fare.
The Dresden Files, also by Jim Butcher. More modern, but definitely fantasy and definitely an epic.
The Mistborn Trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson.
The Stormlight Archives, also by Sanderson. (Unusually, it's a massive cross-over between all of his other epic fantasy books, so I'd advise reading them first.)
Off topic so under tag!
Spoiler
Great list! I really recommend The Dresden Files if you're interested in urban fantasy. Just a warning though, the first couple books are a chore, but Butcher really picks up in the later books! You can definitely see his growth as a writer by reading the series. Um, and some people have called the books out for "Dresden vision", the main character tends to reaaaally get into female descriptions and sometimes he makes somewhat sexist remarks, more the benevolent sexism than anything else, but it's still obnoxious. I just consider it a character flaw for Harry Dresden instead of the author being a horrible person because the author does write some awesome female characters! Oh and there's sidhe! I love sidhe!!
If you're interested in more of the epic medievalish fantasy I highly suggest you read The Name of the Wind. This book is a gem, the author is a talented and creative writer. As far as writing skill goes I'd say he's more talented than Martin, but Martin is definitely the better world builder. The second book A Wise Man's Fears is a bit of a let down, the main character Kvothe, who was already a bit of a Mary Sue in the first book (forgivable it's an excellent book), goes into overdrive in the second. Critics have also called the second book out on being a male pleasure/power fantasy... and I see it. Not to say the book is horrible, it's a good book and has great parts to it, but it is vastly inferior to the first.
I went off on rant... I love reading! And I love fantasy!!
"End of yours", "your world must die", etc.
Like his world died.
It could be metaphorical, he said he destroyed the world, but Thedas still exists, dwarves still exist, elves still exist.
I'm 100% certain the Veil will come down in the next game (there are 3 different prophecies foreseeing that and several prominent characters speaking about an upcoming change), I think that the sundering of Veil will not kill everybody because then Thedas will just end.
When he spoke about his previous plan to rip down the Veil via his orb he said that while the world burned in raw chaos, he would've restored the elvhen, I think chaos = spirits, demons, people getting magic, mages growing suddenly stronger, titans awakening, etc.
If having the Fade merge with the unchanging world will cause anybody to die, Solas will stop being grey, it will change him from a compelling antagonist to a full on evil villain. Moreover, (in my eyes) it isn't as interesting if there is nothing to be gained from the removal of the Veil, it takes from the story.
If you're a rival elf Inquisitor and you ask to join him you'' say (might not be exact) "I'd give my life to restore the elven people." then Solas replies with "Would you give the lives of everyone you've ever known?"
And for the whole discussion about the Solas and Lavellan relationship and how healthy it is, I will say this again.
Game relationships do not translate well to the real world. Barely any fictional relationships do. Fiction is excapism, you're reading/playing/watching to immerse yourself in a world where there are things people/you do that you wouldn't/couldn't do in real life.
My favorite romances are Zevran, Fenris, and Solas. Real life me is not crazy enough to get intimate with an assassin/ someone who tried to kill me! Fenris is waaaay too much brood, anger, angst, and baggage for real life, plus I'd never go out with someone who hated what I/what my sister was. Eff that! Solas is obviously Solas and his issues. Honestly the "best" relationships for real life would be Alistair, Cullen, and Josephine and they still have loads of issues! We like the drama and angst though, it keeps us invested in a story and in a romance.
I think the biggest issue is when reaaallly unhealthy relationships are made to look ideal in fiction *coughsTwilightcoughs* and when people *coughsTweenscoughs* can't separate fantasy and real life. My 12 year old little sister adores reading Young Adult romance novels, which if you know anything about that genre you know it's ick (for the most part), and shoujo anime. She is pretty obsessed with them and rejects my suggestions of anime and books with better female role models. So after she finsihes a novel like Hush, Hush we'll sit down and talk about it.
"You know the way Patch (stupidest name evar) treats doormat Nora isn't acceptable in real life?"
"Yeees, I know, you always tell me this."
"Just making sure!"
We'll also sit and make lists of our favorite/least favorite shoujo protagonists (Haruhi is my favorite!!!! Maid-sama and Na Kiss girls suuuuuck!!!) and laugh about the fact that YA romance protagonists are all practically the same person. Not every little girl has an awesome big sister though, and there's some really shady fiction targeted at that age group out there.
Sorry for the pretty off topic rant so many pages later, this subject just really interests me!

Why was this spoiled? Should I be spoilering? I'll do it anyway.

Ahh, I didn't even finish Crystal White (I enjoyed it enough, but I didn't like the Lavellan in that fic so I just lost interest once they got together), but I guess I can understand if she goes into more detail about the extent of his cruelty in a side fic.
But still, it's a fanfic. OOC and following dark themes are a dime a dozen. Or am I looking at the wrong ones? xD

I avoid kmeme too, but Crystal White is the first result on fanfiction dot net for Solas/Lavellan pairings with the most favourites, that's how I came across it personally.

Yeah, I was just doing spoilers in case people want to start reading Crystal White and don't want to know anything about it. Have you read Feynite's "Dread Wolf's Heart" or "Looking Glass"? I like her Lavellans.
omg now I feel bad for making this stupid almost none edited stupid disney thing about solas.... I was planning on making more haha many liked this so I will repost it for ppl who did not see still I do no find this vid of mine anything cool since I know I can do better lol and A LOT
I love when people do this kind of stuff!
Have you guys seen this?
It was posted in the Cullen thread and it's soo funny. I've never even watched Futurama and this still had me dying XD
I first heard of this when I was at PAX East. Apparently, the writer, who was in Cole cosplay, had their friend and fellow dev mention this fic to Mike Laidlaw and then of course Weekes and others found out and the riftjob thing kind of spread and became a joke that's still occasionally referred to.
