In my defense, I'm making small tweaks to the fic from Solas's POV.  Some of it is flat-out wrong, now that Trespasser is out.

Good god... how can I totally NOT understand how Solas feels about the Veil, when I'm about the same when it comes to me and my creations?!

 

I can spend all of my energy on, say, a picture until I'm almost entirely spent and have to take some time to sleep things through - and I come back next day to it and usually my reaction to what I've done is "OMG, WTF is this!?!?!" *struggles with urge to scrap it and start everything from the scratch*

Gods, yes...I have an account, but I haven't even tried to write fiction since I was a teenager. That was a really, really, extremely...long time ago!

 

I don't really have a clue about how to write fiction (at least on my own), because even then it was mostly a collaboration...passing the story back and forth, writing a paragraph or two, just for fun. I did however, write a lot of poetry and prose--which always seemed to come more naturally to me.

 

As far as fan fiction goes, I really have nothing, except for a bunch of crazy ideas and "something" I wrote by accident when opening notepad just to write down some of the "ideas"...ummm, it might be a chapter or a prologue (?) for that "something," but it feels mostly like a project in search of an author.

And wow I was a mess last night, thanks for hearing me out instead of kicking me out  . And for sharing your own experiences. They really calmed my anxiety down, felt like I was in a confession room (the good kind!), and I ended up feeling all mushy inside. You guys are the best. And I'm really really grateful

 

And since you've been so willing to share personal things, it's just fair that I be too so, about me and writing in the spoiler tags.

Truth is, I'm taking up a BA in Creative Writing right now. Writing's pretty much become my life, which is why this slump is really depressing me. It's been going on for a while now see. I should have graduated two years ago, but I still haven't because my thesis still isn't done. That's literally the only thing keeping me from my diploma, and I still can't finish it. Probably because I decided to write a novel, which I've never tried before, and now that decision's tripping me up. I've lost my chance to graduate with honors, and it's really awkward at family reunions now, when people keep asking where I'm working and I have to keep on repeating I still haven't finished my thesis yet, so just part time jobs for now, and I can just tell my parents are getting really frustrated with me, and I'm getting really frustrated with myself. Fanfic was supposed to be a break, a place to write without any pressure, no advisers or parents or concerned friends breathing down my neck. Though now there suddenly is pressure, because it turns out people actually like what I've written. So now I'm pushing myself to be better. Which is good. I do want to be better. But sometimes it's like improvement's the only thing I'm working on anymore, perfectionism, instead of just enjoying the story. And I'm not making much progress with my thesis either, still, and the semester's ending in two months. So. There. Not feeling very good right now.

Thanks for putting the collection together! I will have to try to write something worthy of it.

 

Writing wank and unsolicited advice:

I totally get being frustrated, as it's very hard to write well. It is a worthy goal however, and I hope you can overcome whatever is holding you back. Making something good or great, may not get you any acknowledgement or compensation, and it's a hard thing to look at when you know you're putting a lot of yourself into a work.

 

If you've decided to write professionally, you have to know why you are doing it, and what you expect to get out of it - because sometimes the only reward, is knowing you did the best you could and got paid (though, I understand, there is also just doing enough and getting paid, which makes for a lot of samey, trite YA novels and romances, or, doing your best and not getting paid at all, as well T__T).

 

Maybe you need to step back from everything, write a letter to your friends that you're not dead, you're just taking a retreat, turn off the wi-fi, find a quiet spot and just bust out some unholy verbiage, and find that thread you've been trying to tack down. If you find yourself feeling empty, like you don't have anything to say, and you could do it just fine before, maybe it's a symptom of something else you need to identify, or talk to a counselor about.

 

You are a good writer though - you know the rules, you know how to get a feeling across, write dialogue, keep a character in character - the pieces are there, all that's left is the grind of getting it all down.

 

If you're looking for help with the nuts and bolts of fiction, writing and the ups and downs of the writing life, I think Chuck Wendig gives some great advice and insight at his blog. He can sometimes be a bit silly or gross, but he's entertaining and brutally honest, and makes great lists (I ADORE LISTS).

Really quick two cents on writing perfectionism:

What broke it for me was filling prompts for the kink meme. Seriously. I know it's not everyone's jam, and some of the stuff there is bizarre to downright scary. But 1) not all of the prompts are smut and 2) anonymity is so very freeing. Because of the format of kmeme, unless you pre-write the fic, there's no way to save and edit, no going back and nitpicking. Try picking a relatively tame or easy prompt, and fill it in the livejournal form without pre-writing it. When you're done with a section, click post. It was really scary at first, but because everyone's anonymous and there's such a low ratio of fills to prompts, everyone is usually really nice. And the only feedback system is commenting, so people do comment on a fairly regular basis.

As I said, I know it's not for everyone. And I wouldn't expect critical or constructive feedback from kmeme. But it's a good exercise in breaking the compulsion to constantly nitpick your own work.

Agreed, perfectionism will kill your writing dead. Expectations will also kill it. What you need is an idea you are passionate about and a plan to get it on the page, and really that is it. Everything else comes in the second draft when you're doing clean up (or at least that's what the professionals seem to be very adamant about. I've read a lot of writing manuals XD).

 

The hard part, if you can get past the expectations and the perfectionism, is getting to that second draft. I am struggling myself, and I sympathize 100% with anyone who wants to write, but has to fight for every coherent sentence. The kmeme is freeing, because it's not serious, it's pure fantasy, even moreso than the original source material, and no one expects you to make art, all they want is a feeling in their pants.

 

I hadn't written anything for the better part of a year, after I broke up with my last fandom, and the kmeme got me writing again. They even have the prompts all listed out on pinboard so you can sort by the pairing, character or kink (or lack thereof) you're looking for, so you don't have to go through 20 Iron Bull lactation prompts.

 

 

I've set it to need moderators, but how do we judge whether something can be included in terms of posting activity on this thread? Does someone need to have posted at least 10 posts here, before they can be allowed to post their fic? Or do we just set it to members, instead of approving by fic?

I guess if there's an option to join a group, maybe set it to that so randos can't post in it. If there isn't, I mean there are a ton of groups on AO3. People probably won't post in it unless they know about it. Then again... I wish I felt comfortable posting in something like that, I have a few fluff pieces atm, but they are garbage and everything else is a little hardcore or weird.

I think this is true for most artists, that's the reason I didn't publish anything new for two years on my DeviantArt 

There was this one time I tried a new coloring technique and I tried to draw a witch of some sort and I really liked the result at first and then the next day I looked at her I was "oh god what have I done" -closes file and never touches it again-

A year later I saw it again and had to stop myself from deleting the file from my computer

I am not going to sleep... infact it's 11.47pm here in Finland and I decided to have a drink since I do not have to go to school tomorrow and it is a start of a holiday week where I live next week so... my plan was to check Solas' butt out and get little fuzzy with alcohol haha.
