You are not alone! You may not even be the oldest...

<3

Ah! I was all happy thinking BW gave me a lovely Trespasser DLC for my 46th birthday. Instead it turned into agony and heartache. :::shakes fist::::
And Kadan, you aren't the only Old kickin' it on this thread. I too started out with an Atari. People act surprised when they learn I'm a gamer and I never understand why. Gen X grew up on them, why would we stop? I don't play everything, but give me a good story and characters and I'm all over it.

It does seem amusing to my son's friends though, which makes me laugh. My sons GF was here once when I was playing DA2. There's the part where you meet Zevran and he throws his dagger into someone's eye. I started laughing and yelled "yeah! In the face!!!" And the GF nearly fell down laughing. From then on they'd just randomly blurt out "In the face!" Around me. So at least it entertains the whippersnappers. Now get off my lawn!

We should make the OGL--Old Gamer Ladies' Club or something...hahaha...still ROFL! B)

Seriously...I thought I was the only one...kind of isolated. It's good to know that's not the case... :)

Everyone's a spy in the Inquisition - Varric, Lavellan, Leliana, Solas, Iron Bull, Sera are all part of or in charge of their own networks. I headcanon that when Lavellan meets them, she automatically asks, "So who do you spy for?"

Part of me always gets an amused kick out how Trespasser's plot basically hinges on Solas deciding to be sporting and allow us to discover the shadow war going on right underneath our noses, between the Qunari spies and Agents of Fen'Harel working within the Inquisition...

Or that we've got an actual double agent, the elven guard who's one of Leliana's spies while moonlighting as one of Solas' spies...

At this point, if Varric reveals he's actually a reverse triple agent for the Nug King, I'm honestly not going to be surprised anymore!

One thing that has been bugging me about Falon'Din ever since Trespasser... how do we reconcile the legends that state he the only one able to travel between Thedas and the Beyond, if the Veil only made passage between the two nigh-impossible after he was locked away with the others?

I suppose the legends could be wrong (again), but it might be interesting if we learn he was able to travel between the various pocket dimensions in other ways besides Eluvians, or was one responsible for building the Eluvian network in the first place.

I also thought that Solas was a ginger by his eyebrows and freckles! But Bioware had older concepts of him with dark brown hair and it made me feel so sad T_T
XD no but really ginger Solas would've been so adorable. Dunno though.. maybe they changed it? I still would go for ginger Solas --->
XD omg your hair then is perfect and so is the eye color *_* Your eyes look bigger with that color and so.. soft and beautiful!! I wish I had brown eyes :3 so many warm hair colors also fit with that eye color!

I have dark hair and I don't always think my eyes are that big, but I sent a picture of my freshly made up face to a friend before I went out and her comment back was 'biiiiig eyes'. I'm sure my exaggerated black eyeliner helped but it did look pretty.

Haha, yeah. Purple dialogues were the best and humorous Hawke has no equal!

Lol. I watched them on YouTube and they made me cringe and laugh.

I tried some more purple responses when I started a replay and it doesn't quite feel right. The worst was when the option seemed fairly benign-ish and Hawke just made a flippant comment about "boneless women" when she came to tell that guy his wife was dead. Like....no, bad Hawke. Baaaad.

I played mostly blue with a dash of purple and my Lavellan is also mostly sincere/top option with some snark. Sometimes the snark is irresistible though. JoH and judging Storvacker...oh man, every middle option.

I think we can assume to a small degree that the legends are a bit wrong. But I like your theory on him traveling to other dimensions. makes my current Fan Fic a little more credible.

Oh all you baby Lavellans! I must be the old lady here. One of the things I appreciate about BW games is that I can play them without feeling like I should be 16. I like character complexity and I do feel appreciated as an older gamer. I pictured Solas as being physically about 42-45, but that might just be because he seems like somewhere close to my age. He's got the obvious emotional baggage but a bit of wisdom though still with blind spots. About perfect for everyone my age. It also makes sense that he'd hop into it with Lavellans because age and knowing better don't mean you don't need hot schmexxy time and cuddles.

I'm almost 40, and one of the reasons Inquisition really hit the spot for me, is that all of the companions in the game except Sera, who is kind of a tagalong anyway, look old enough to be doing the jobs they're doing.

I also like Solas because of his maturity, but that's not the only thing, or I'd have been into Blackwall as well (and I'm not) even though physically Blackwall is more my type. Solas just oozes confidence and certainty of purpose and that's really attractive to me (even if he comes with a ton of baggage).

And I'm still catching up. :P

So I'm curious. Has anyone started calling their partner "vhenan" in real life?

Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to, I don't have a partner IRL. I feel like I'm gonna be one of those people who's gonna be forever alone. :P

Speakin of the spiders, what would your Lavellan really see the Fearlings as? I guess you could say "it's canon that Inquisitor is afraid of spiders" but really it's a gameplay/story segregation that they can't tailor Fearlings for everyone's PC's specific fears. Some examples iirc Cass sees them as maggots, Sera perceives them as areas of "nothing", and of course the names of the Fearlings themselves are good examples: the Calling, Templars, mages, darkspawn. There's also a codex entry which shows that they can also be more abstract - I think I remember reading someone's account of how when they stuck the Fearling with their sword, they were overcome with a crippling sensation of having disappointed their father or something like that. A related question is what would her tombstone be for you but that's asked a lot so.

Hmm, I'm not too bothered by spiders IRL unless they're as big as my hand, nor am I bothered by spiders in video games. :P However, my Lavellan's greatest fear would either be loss, abandonment, or loneliness. Tala loves being surrounded by friends and family, so losing everyone she cares about and being left alone in the process is something she fears the most. (Solas leaving her did not help.)

So maybe like NeverlandHunter, she'd see the Fearlings as undead versions of her clan and her close friends in the Inquisition.

*snip*

Speaking of which and making this Solas related again, how much of an age gap does Solas have with your Lavellan? How old is (physically) Solas and your Lavellan?

I place my Lavellan at 23 at the start of the Inquisition and 26 by Trespasser.

*snip*

Tala is 21 at the start of DAI and is 24 by Trespasser. I always saw Solas as someone who was in their late 30s to early to mid 40s. (And I'm one of those crazy people who doesn't mind huge age gaps. *cough*  )

Cass is around that age too.

I guess my PCs have a thing for their partners being much older than them because my Trevelyan who romanced Cass is in his 30s. ;)

I have no forum etiquette, so I'm really, really sorry if this is rude or out of line. I just wanted to poke in and say hello-- and that I have loved reading your posts. I am stuck in this massive DA:I / Solas thing.

All of DA is incredible, but the writing of Solas is impeccable. I am an avid gamer and advocate of video games being accepted and treated as a respected art form. Because of this, I have spent a lot of time looking at games from a more academic standpoint vs gamer standpoint. Solas is the best written character I have encountered hands down. In fact, I think his character illustrates the concept of grey-area better than any other personification of such. I am a writer (published non-fiction) that struggles with massive, debilitating depression and have been left feeling "tranquil" for a few years. Solas' arc was so inspiring to me that I've grabbed hold of the obsession wave and am going to ride it as long as it's pushing me to be productive. I have done a bunch of fan art, wrote fan-fiction for the first time ever, and am finishing up a Lavellan costume for a pro photoshoot this Saturday.

Sorry to interrupt and go off topic, but I am so excited to see people who feel the same way I do! Sometimes you just need someone to nerd out with. <3

Hello, and welcome.

tumblr_ms1vef43Sg1sfj7o1o1_500.gif

I'm glad you decided to say hi. Others have already let you know about our blanket fort, which also comes equipped with fanfiction, cookies, and emergency kittens (or puppies if you prefer). :)

Embrace the inspiration where you can find it. I can also relate to what you're describing, and I'm another writer who has mostly written non-fiction stuff for my work before returning to fiction for the first time in about five years this year with some Solavellan fanfiction. That is making me consider going back to some of my original ideas too, so you never know where the inspiration will take you, but you seem to be using it.

Feel free to stick around and any other lurkers, we're friendly, talk to us. :)

I play my Hawke the same way as your Hawke -- blue with a dash of purple. Same thing with my Lavellan, though I think I chose the snark options more for her than I did with my Hawke since it suited her character more. :P

I think Solas understands Cole's predicament, but not the terrible fear that drives it.  He's sympathetic rather than empathetic.

That is precisely why, along with what midnight tea said below, Solas needs Cole (+ a friendly or romanced Lavellan) because of that a different side and the potential for what it can accomplish . Solas is compassionate and sympathetic but empathy is a different beast.  Spirit Cole saying he must return to the Fade because Solas needs to remember who he is, that and Cole's statement about feeling comfortable with himself, a spirit, that he belongs in the world, both of those things are true and both of them made me cry.

Solas is, as you say, pragmatic, analytical, compassionate and sympathetic, but he needs more.

I think it's a bit more than that - not that many good spirits remained; he told us that via banter. I think that's actually one of main reasons he's horrified with the Veiled world and concerned about the future - negative emotions and sentiments outweigh the good ones, giving rise to more 'negative' spirits, which then influence the waking world or are born to it, basically turning the whole thing into one big vicious circle where eventually only negative things remain.

So, Solas seems to be genuinely terrified of losing yet another 'good'/gentle spirit - be it to blood binding that may erase Cole's consciousness, or him possibly being 'lost' after becoming human/mortal (since he's not really convinced the strength or nature of spirit won't be twisted or diminished that way... though apparently approved Inky proved him wrong), hence he disapproved of it.

Well, if you're ever in Birmingham (England, not Alabama) for whatever reason, I'll take you up on that offer of coffee. Not sure why you would though, it's grey and rainy and miserable here :P. Trauma is a really fascinating area of study though, I've heard that it dramatically alters our brains, but didn't know your brain could recover like that. It's actually quite comforting to know we're more resilient than we may think.

I wouldn't worry about being off topic. I think about 10% of what I post is on topic, haha.

People are really resilient. It makes Solas and his gremlin assessment even more frustrating. Varric has the better take here. People can survive a lot of things and carve out something for themselves, even heal and grow. Solas is like...meh, not impressed. :P

I don't think either of them is wrong, IMO it's the ultimate grey choice in the game.

In many ways Varric is the antithesis of Solas in the game. Past versus present. Leadership versus friendship. Mistrust vs openness. Perseverence versus acceptance. So I think one of the main functions of Cole's personal mission is to juxtapose these two and put emphasis on their differences, which are further developed in the party banter.

It's really interesting to me to see everyne's take on Cole's personal mission because to me, it was a really easy decision for me. I'm not judging anyone else's decision, but Cole is a spirit, he came to help, not to become a human. Mage Cole died. This is an individual spirit in a unique situation, and a rare spirit at that. It is bittersweet, ultimately, but leaving Cole as a spirit was not changing him into something he was not, not forcing him to become something else or for the world to lose another spirit of Compassion.

But then I kept reading people opting for human Cole, which didn't make sense to me and also talking about the decision being hard.

All my opinion, of course.

+1000 Cole feels always.

Art post. :P

Solavellan inspired by the song "Animal Instinct" by the Cranberries.

Apparently this is still a WIP but lovely artwork of Lavellan in a dress and Solas in his Hierophant outfit.

Solas and Lavellan kissing.  ^_^

Solas and Lavellan lying in bed.

Solas and Lavellan arriving in Crestwood, done for Inktober. (Pretty!)

Solas and Emma from the fic, Keeping Secrets, in a 1930's archeologist AU for Inktober.

WIP Smooch attack. (Solavellan)  :D

A nice-looking Solas WIP.

Trespasser: "My love."  :crying:

Trespasser: "Lavellan, its me, Fen'harel." (I'm guessing this is an Anastasia parody. xD)

Trespasser: Inked artwork of Solas.

Wagon Age: Expedition. I love that Iron Bull is a... well... bull. xD.

(And apparently according to the artist's comments, Morrigan shapshifted into a cow.  )

I keep Cole a spirt for the same reason he is a spirt that was his purpose, that's his place in the world. To me it felt wrong to change him to human, for that is not what he was. He didn't come to be a human he came to help human Cole and sadly became a casualty of others cruelty which nearly drove him to become something far worse.

One thing that has been bugging me about Falon'Din ever since Trespasser... how do we reconcile the legends that state he the only one able to travel between Thedas and the Beyond, if the Veil only made passage between the two nigh-impossible after he was locked away with the others?

Yeah good question. In Mythal's incantation we hear "we few who travel far, call to me and I will come". I think that's referring to the evanuris? Through the crossroads (or labyrinth as Solas calls it)? And the song to Falon'din says "Lethanavir, master-scryer, be our guide, Through shapeless worlds and airless skies". Sounds like space .
