And apparently Time-travel Fixit AUs if they're done really well, because usually I hate time-travel, but I love Feynite's stuff sooo...

 

Any premise can be good if it's done with skill and a light touch.

The bakery ones have been really cute. (Bread Wolf and Doughnut Rebel) But I'm with MayriyaNoori on AUs.

I don't go seeking them out but I don't avoid them either. I guess it depends on the way it's written.

I don't know if this is minority opinion.....but I actually have a really hard time getting into AU stuff. Like art with characters in modern clothing is cool....stuff like that....but I can't ever seem to really get into AU fanfics.

 

Maybe I just haven't found one that hits the spot?

 

I feel the same and don't like most AUs, but once in a while one works if I consider it its own separate thing. Rarely though.

Ha! I have done this, and my daughter just rolls her eyes. I keep a small notebook with me to jot down all lines of dialog or scenes so I don't forget them.

Forgetting them would be convenient sometimes, but for me at least pieces of dialogue I'm working on loop over and over in my head, slightly changing on each iteration until I come up with a version that satisfies me. I should do more editing after I write, but at least I'm always editing in my head.

I suppose my own story could be considered AU, since I'm tying two worlds together. Ultimately though the main world is Thedas. I am straying from cannon, but I can't see Solas in a different setting it just doesn't feel right.

Time travel, Arlathan, and/or Pantheon related stuff, Fade stuff. Modern OC in Thedas, if it's done well. I can't seem to "get into" modern AU for some reason. I'm a sucker for history/mythology/lore...

ooh, definitely any modern au where he's not a professor. I loved loved loved flower/ink for portraying that - just a relationship between two working people, one's a florist, the other's a tattoo artist, who bumped into each other entirely by accident. I'm dead fond of all the bakery aus for that reason, they're usually really fluffy and sweet as well.

 

things I'd love to see:

- regency au where Solas isn't a Mr. Darcy type. I've read one where he's just this ordinary painter, a commoner, and the class difference is the other way around: Elizabeth Lavellan is the one who is expected to marry above her station, but Solas is beneath her (supposedly). It's excellent. ALSO I just love 18th century history stuff in general.
- any kind of artist au. painter!Solas is my jam. Would like to see a drabble fic done in different art styles about him.

- I did my bachelor's dissertation on french culture 1945-68, so I'd kinda love to see a super pretentious french intellectual au with lots of chain-smoking in trendy cafés on the left-bank where they talk about the 'anxiety of existence' or something equally ridiculous, written in the style of a French new-wave film. It'll never happen, but I can dream.

 

 

things I don't like so much:

- professor/student aus (overdone, can be slightly creepy if not done well)

- arlathan aus (just not my jam, will make exceptions for good fics though).

- anything where he's a member of nobility or a slave-owner, I really like the idea that Solas wasn't born wise or powerful, but came to that position despite all odds against him.

- modern OC in thedas. never liked these kinds of fics tbh.

Yes I'm with you here. I love that they left it up to each of us to decide. For me there was never any question about their intimacy until I visited the forum. It seemed like a given, but I appreciate that the writer left this open if it upsets players and makes them feel used.

 

My Levellan doesn't feel used because of their intimacy. Sex isn't the end all be all of a relationship and deception in bed isn't worse than any other deception. The point where he tells her he loves her is the "I'm going all the way moment" in my head, thus intimacy didn't seem like the "line" where Solas should stop. When he said  "I would not lay with you under false pretenses" I interpreted it as "I wouldn't have been with you if I didn't really love you". It fits with his "What we had was real" comment. He very VERY much wants to impress on Levellan that his actions were born from genuine feelings, even if he was hiding important facts about his identity.

 

Personally, I think Solas deceived himself far more than he did Levellan. He was never in control of the situation with her and still isn't. Sure she chased him, but he never really walked away in all those scenes either. He always leaves the door open and when she doesn't come back, he kinda comes back... I think he wants to tell himself that he can walk away (even if it's painful), and his mission will be more important and fulfilling in the long run. In truth she represents exactly the kind of hope he once stood for and should be fighting for and I think it nags at his conscience that this could be true. Dumping her allows him to retreat back into his own beliefs and sense of "rightness". He can even tell himself that he's self sacrificing because that seems to be a big part of who he really is. I think he's terrified because choosing her means accepting his mistakes and building something new, which will be much harder than erasing a past wrong. 

 

If Levellan chooses to not walk away and save him...well...I think that makes Levellan the bravest person in the game. She's basically saying "Yep, I see exactly who you are and I love you anyway. Flaws and all." This is a powerful statement to a person who's likely expecting to be abandoned by a spiteful lover and it would be flooring to hear that. Before him is standing a tenacious person who believes in him and is seeking understanding while offering forgiveness. How do you cleanly walk away from someone who believes in the best of you when you're at your worst, and has the ability to bring out the best in you again?

Plus, fade knee crotch love.

I love Bread Wolf and Doughnut Rebel. I'd also love to read something where he's an artist or poet, but haven't actively looked for a fic like that yet.

 

This is just a personal preference, but I can't stand professor Solas AUs. Not that it wouldn't fit his character, it's just that I have to interract with faculty as a mentee, and imagining Solas as one of them makes me incredibly uncomfortable. I find myself unable to read and enjoy some very good fics, because he has some professor-y role in them.

I hadn't really thought of time travel, Arlathan and Pantheon stuff as AU but if it is, then I'm down with those. I have read something along those lines and they were cool.

I've broken down how, as the romance continues, their body languages changes to display increased physical intimacy (which doesn't have to be sexual but for most couples it will be), but for Solas, touch does seem very important. From grabbing her to return the kiss, then pulling her back on the whole thigh dip thing, then later, on the balcony, then with his hand on her back at the Winter Palace, and in the final romance scene, he's always touching her and when he breaks it off, he won't let her touch him if the selected option, like the sad I love you has her step forward to try. He waves her away like he just can't touch her or he'll get pulled back in.

I actually really enjoy time travel AUs. Though the only one I've found that I've really enjoyed is Looking Glass by Feynite. I'm kinda picky when it comes to fanfiction.

I'm just going to high five you on studying something like this that you have to actually explain to people who don't quite know what to make of it when you tell them.

 

Mine was on pre-Civil War Spanish literature and the group of writers known as the Generation of '27, with a focus on the work of Federico García Lorca.

I haven't been in or around a college setting in forever, but I can see where workplace romance would squick someone who had to work in that environment (especially student/teacher type stuff). Is it more power imbalance stuff (hahren/da'len is ick for me), or just that it's unprofessional?

 

There's always stuff going on in the background whatever job you are in - I worked in a bookstore for like ten years, and there were always people hooking up, getting married, breaking up (and there was also sexual harassment from customers and other employees). I probably wouldn't mind a bookstore au, but it might as well be a coffeeshop au b/c one usually comes with the other these days.

Regarding the did they/ didn't they question, Patrick Weekes said that he very specifically wanted each player to come to their own conclusions about it. I wish I had the source, if I remember I will post it. I do believe it was a podcast.

The "I did not lay with you under false pretences" could mean either "that is why I did not lay with you" OR "I legitimately love you, I was not lying about that, sleeping together was an act of legitimate love."

Also-- this whole "abusive" conversation is really frustrating. The best thing about Bioware-- and the best thing about Solas for that matter is that all the characters are so complicated-- like real people. There is no black and white. Solas is a character that defines "grey area" and to cast him, and Lavellan's relationship in such a simplistic light is going against the basal elements of the character.

He did some shady things-- for reasons he thought were good-- and obviously feels awful about them.

That is what makes this character so absolutely astounding. Yes, there will be reams of people who fan over him because he's handsome and has a great voice/motion actor. But there is so so so SO much more to this character that it feels like... Are people just missing the point?

Solas was a pride spirit who was summoned and bound by Mythal (I was Solas first, Fen'Harel came later.) He was given the insult name of Fen'Harel-- not as much of "wolf" and more of "dog." It was an insult calling him her guard dog. He is desperately loyal to her because he is bound to her, but at the same time is resentful and pushes for freedom. This is why he is willing to walk away from Lavellan even though it shattered him, because his loyalty is first and foremost to Mythal. He's her puppy.

 

I think he walked away because he feels he has a duty to his people and to fix his mistake rather then out of some obligation to Mythal. Like he said to Mythal before draining away her power. "But the people, they need me."
