question for the thread: what're your favorite solas au concepts?
Time travel, Arlathan, and/or Pantheon related stuff, Fade stuff. Modern OC in Thedas, if it's done well. I can't seem to "get into" modern AU for some reason. I'm a sucker for history/mythology/lore...

For all the talk on power imbalance in the main game (and it is an important issue, but I've posted before that I think they handled it well), Solas doesn't actually have direct power over Lavellan: he might end up being more powerful, but he is never in a position to order her around. She is free at any point to say "F*ck you egg", if she wishes, and go against him with her own forces backing her up. With a teacher/student dynamic that's completely different, and the power imbalance there is so pronounced if the fic is realistic. Same would hold for other workplace romances, I suppose, but I've mostly seen the professor ones.I haven't been in or around a college setting in forever, but I can see where workplace romance would squick someone who had to work in that environment (especially student/teacher type stuff). Is it more power imbalance stuff (hahren/da'len is ick for me), or just that it's unprofessional?
There's always stuff going on in the background whatever job you are in - I worked in a bookstore for like ten years, and there were always people hooking up, getting married, breaking up (and there was also sexual harassment from customers and other employees). I probably wouldn't mind a bookstore au, but it might as well be a coffeeshop au b/c one usually comes with the other these days.

I know this post is 6 pages old but I wanted to chip in.
Two years ago my boyfriend and I adopted two kittens from a shelter (two brothers), we named them Chai & Chili.
When adopting from this shelter they had us sign a form that makes us oblige to have the adopted animals neutered when they're old enough.
We put a ton of love when we cared for them, two months in when they were 3 months the shelter's asked us to come to have them castrated, we were supposed to put them in the morning and take them home in the afternoon.
On that day, my boyfriend came along with a friend (to help him carry two cages), needless to say - he returned home with only one.
I remember the phone call, he called me to tell me Chili died (he was just laying in the cage, nobody even noticed he stopped breathing), at first I thought he was joking, how could a cat die from castration? The postmortem operation made it clear that there was a problem with his heart and it just stopped, it was unclear whether he was sensitive to the anesthetic (that's what they say at the shelter) or over-dosed (he was treated by a junior). I was MAD and utterly devastated.
Would I have done anything different if I had known it would end this way? Yes, I would've taken him to my veterinarian, or outright refuse to have him neutered. If it was a heart flaw or sensitivity then it probably would've killed him later in life, either way, I never regretted adopting him, even if my heart broke.
I loved him, he was happy. He had a good life, even if was really short.
After his death we adopted a new cat, so Chai wouldn't be alone (it was a hard thing to do, because we didn't want to just replace him, he was our child), her name is Cheetah. She is originally from the street, a week into her adoption we had to take her to the vet, she couldn't control her bladder. After the second appointment the vet noticed her heavy breathing and offered a scan, after the scan she was diagnosed with hiatus hernia, apparently she was involved in a car accident when she was on the streets. We were offered to take a chance and make her go under the knife and to repair her hernia. I was scared I'll lose another cat, when I agreed to pay 500$+ on a surgery for a kitten I owned for a week+ people were shocked, the vet himself was shocked because he said her chances were low. She survived, because I didn't give up on her, two years later and she lives happily with Chai in our household. The death of Chili still stings, even after two years, but it gave us the opportunity to save another cat, people kept saying how lucky she is that she got to us because other people would've given up on her.
The idea of not adopting an animal just because they were sick, it really bothered me, so I felt compelled to write this long-ish post.
It doesn't matter if they are dying, adopting them gives them a shot at saving them, and if not that, at least live happily with the time left to them.
I'll say that I never meant to convey that someone should regret buying the animal. If you love him you shouldn't wish to go back in time and change what happened. With that said, I would not buy a terminally ill or very sickly animal. I live with younger children, which is an automatic no right there, but I'm also in college and there is no way in all of the Fade that I could afford those medical bills. It's one thing getting a healthy animal and they get sick then you realize how you have to pay to keep your beloved animal healthy. It's a whole other story buying an animal that's sick knowing what those medical bills are going to look like (no chance for good pet insurance either). My sweet little demon kitty needs prescription cat food that costs $40 friggin dollars! I spent hundreds (probably dipped into the thousand, but that makes me ill just thinking about it) of dollars on him when he had urinary tract issues. I do not, and would never ever regret getting my little prince, but I would not go out and buy an animal that I know has those issues! It's awesome that there are charitable people that go out of there way to buy sickly animals, but I don't think there is anything wrong with people (such as myself) who wouldn't buy a sickly animal. I think it's a bit assuming of you to think that A. everyone can afford to do that and B. Everyone has the same emotional fortitude you do to be able to do that.

ooh, definitely any modern au where he's not a professor. I loved loved loved flower/ink for portraying that - just a relationship between two working people, one's a florist, the other's a tattoo artist, who bumped into each other entirely by accident. I'm dead fond of all the bakery aus for that reason, they're usually really fluffy and sweet as well.
things I'd love to see:
- regency au where Solas isn't a Mr. Darcy type. I've read one where he's just this ordinary painter, a commoner, and the class difference is the other way around: Elizabeth Lavellan is the one who is expected to marry above her station, but Solas is beneath her (supposedly). It's excellent. ALSO I just love 18th century history stuff in general.
- any kind of artist au. painter!Solas is my jam. Would like to see a drabble fic done in different art styles about him.- I did my bachelor's dissertation on french culture 1945-68, so I'd kinda love to see a super pretentious french intellectual au with lots of chain-smoking in trendy cafés on the left-bank where they talk about the 'anxiety of existence' or something equally ridiculous, written in the style of a French new-wave film. It'll never happen, but I can dream.
things I don't like so much:
- professor/student aus (overdone, can be slightly creepy if not done well)
- arlathan aus (just not my jam, will make exceptions for good fics though).
- anything where he's a member of nobility or a slave-owner, I really like the idea that Solas wasn't born wise or powerful, but came to that position despite all odds against him.
- modern OC in thedas. never liked these kinds of fics tbh.

Out of all of the DA:I romances I've seen, the only one I get the abusive vibe from is Sera's with a dalsih quizz where she tries to use manipulation tactiques against Lavellan and then play the victume card when Lavellan refuses give up her religion. That was just 
I don't even see abuse in Iron Bull and Dorian's relationship, despite tumbler telling me its there.
Also, my first Lavellan was afraid of the power dynamic in her relationship with Solas, since she is now head of an organization and he's wandering apostate. Which is why she showed concern that she was pressuring into a relationship after the first kiss.

Created a new elf without mods for my latest PT. Planning to make many changes to the story this time using choices I never have before. This one will romance Solas but will break up with him in Trespasser and attempt to redeem him as a friend.

Yeah, I agree, Lavellan is always shown as having agency in game, and that seems to get lost in a lot of fanfic.
It seems like it would be less gross if it were maybe like a political thing, a professor/professor college political asylum au, but like say Solas' secret is that he's like wanted in another country for being a rabble-rouser, and causing some sort of catastrophe, and is in hiding and the story works around that. It could be interesting. But not something I'd probably write or read unless it came highly recommended. There's plenty real life stuff like that already, I'd rather have Solas/Lavellan in the magical setting.

I didn't play a mage in DAO, so my impression of Cullen was traumatized and suggesting a seriously terrible course of action in killing the mages. Broken Circle is one of my favorite missions in DAO, and while I felt for Cullen, I just couldn't abide that. Then DA2 happened.
DAI was where Cullen was finally someone I could truly like.

Yep. The Inquisitor gave off a mature vibe to me as well and I played her as late 30s. To be honest, it's difficult for me to head cannon Solas falling for someone very young.
Lol. No matter what age you make your Lavellan they're going to be really young to Solas. I doubt the difference from you being 20 to you being 40 matters much to Solas. I would say it's hard to see Solas falling for someone really immature, which as my Lavellan is mature it matters not that she's the gremlin's interpretation of "young".
