RE: Con w/ Quizzy being protag in next game.
Am I alone in thinking allowances shouldn't really be considered for new players jumping into the (what will be) 4th game of a series?
On the one hand I can understand that the previous games are pretty dated by gaming standards now, and the differences between Origins and Inquisition might be too much of a leap for new potential fans, but then I feel people should really expect to not understand what the frilly-frag is going on when they jump in part of the way through a series. Inquisition usually handled this okay with investigate options (example; first talking to the Warden, you can ask what the Calling is) and this also helped with players who did play the previous games but may not remember certain details, but if major changes to how the game can potentially be is scrapped to accommodate new players just jumping in, I don't think that's a great idea.
Plus, as someone says, the Keep is there to get people caught up, and they do plug it before you start a new game.
Again in two minds about this.
DAI was the first BioWare game I played, period. I was very confused at the start (Circles? Bad? Good? I don't understand what you are saying, Viv), but I was hooked enough to go and research the hell out of the two previous games and continue playing.
On the other hand, Wicther 3 was also the first Witcher game I played. At some point, very much in the beginning, you get a dialogue option which pretty much summarised everything you have done in the previous game. I played through it in eeny, meeny, miny, moe style as it meant nothing to me. Then I stopped playing the game (also I don't really like sword fighting, so I guess that contributed too) and yet to come back.
New player to both franchises, pretty similar lore situations (well, on the surface to the uninitiated person), stuck with one and left the other one. The again I know people who had ME3 as the first game also.
I think they always have to keep the new player in mind, financially it just doesn't make sense otherwise. How much they explain is another question. (David Gaider just actually posted one of the interviews his done, where he was asked just that question - how much do they explain to new players. Here's link, that specific question is somewhere in the last batch of questions. Link ). I think, starting with new protagonist would make it easier to explain, whereas continuing with Inky - harder. And like you said, we have a bond with Inky, she's our inquisitor. People who don't know her story will be way less invested. Just look at home many people are requesting HoF to be back, where as that character means nothing to me as I haven't played Origins yet. If HoF would come back (hypothetically), my reaction would be *shrug*. But then there is an argument that the game is not necessary tailored to me, a relatively new player.
Again, having said that, I love my Inky to bits. If I got a chance to be her again and finish her story with Solas, I would love nothing more. I still see your pros, even though I just posted a bunch of cons above.
