Re: the recent Tumblr drama.

I haven't seen the actual post itself but from the reaction posts I've seen on the Solas and Solavellan tags, apparently it has something to do with someone criticizing people who play their Lavellans as "self-inserts" and then claiming that all Solamancing Lavellans are self-inserts. And apparently, people were sending anon hate and death threats over that. Not sure who's sending them to whom but that's what I've gathered.

Sounds like a regular week on Tumblr. I really thought every possible topic to dramatize over has been exhausted, but I was wrong. Such a waste of time.

I've really liked your fic so far :) So those "others" conjured by your doubt gremlins can stuff it!

Piggybacking off Cee's advice, whenever I'm really stuck, I jump around and just write a different section. It may not be direct progress but it gets the juices flowing again.

Good advice I needed a reminder of. My Solas is still stuck in the feels corner. I'm worried he'll morph into Fenris.

Usually, I'll end up with [missing] when I can't see something. But, it's really hard for me not to write in order. It goes against the way I learned how to write, and I keep feeling bad when I can't come up with the words completely right the first time. It's an exhausting way to think about writing though, so I'm trying to be better about it.

It may help to try and break from that because a more flexible style might turn out to work better than having a blank line and a cursor blinking at you. The way people teach us to do things has merit but it's only one way to do things.

My friend is in a creative writing MA program and she's being told to write in order, which I think only benefits the professors if the best way for you isn't linear. So she has been trying to adapt to writing in order and it has been on and off for her.

Perfectionism and comparisons only really serve to stifle us, and you can admire and even be inspired by other work without letting it intimidate or make you feel bad.

Same here, to an extent. :P

Not only that, of course there's the usual stuff about the comparison between Solavellan and Edward/Bella; calling the Solavellan romance "abusive" and "unhealthy"; and apparently Solavellan (sorry, i meant) Solasmancing Lavellans being "generic and boring".

You're playing it wrong. Clearly. :P

My characters have bits of me so I can relate to them and their decisions, but none of them are self-inserts. Some are more like me than others. I'd say Nirwen is the most like me as far as DA protagonists go. But seeing as I start with a loose outline and then play the game and only then fully develop a character idea/concept, it was not intentional.

We are now in the same hundred as the Cullen thread > : ) soooooon

Cullen will always be the fairy tale happy ending, with a picturesque wedding and all the attendant cuteness which is fine, but that story is over. Solas' story is just beginning.

The doubt gremlins have taken over my mind. I'm staring at my current fic chapter and can't bring myself to write like at all. Everything sucks and I want to burn my fic (although, probably not as it would mean burning my computer). Doubts suck, man.

Have a hug!

When does Felassan show up in your fic? (Can PM if you don't want to spoil for everyone.) I'll go read up to there and leave some comments. That usually helps me move forward.  We'll get you out of the slump.

Amen. Let me just say though that Feynite's intimidating as heck lol.

He shows up at the end of chapter 4 :) Chapter 1 an 2 are a little meandering and I apologize in advance. In my defense I had no idea where I was going at the time. (not that I quite know still, other than I want a lot of things to happen and I'm not sure how I'm going to get there lol)

Edit : Also, I want to thank everyone for their encouragement. It really does help keep the gremlins at bay.

I know nobody here actually made that accusation, but I have the massive urge to refute such a comparison anyway.

Oh it's been refuted, many times, and very well. I think that comparison started last year.. (anyone remember?)

It feels a bit like a broken record. I suppose since Trespasser they feel "vindicated" or something...

I mean, if you're gonna hate Solas, fine, hate Solas, but go away and do it and please refrain from harrassing those who do not hold the same opinion as you.  Which is what's happening now.

Random question here but does anyone know if the current vallaslin's for DAI are the new widely used designs or if they're just for clan Lavellan? If the former, I'm curious what Merrill's would look like. ^^

Solas can be a bit of a downer, but Fenris is the king of the grumpy elves.  Solas would have to take about 5000 XP in grumping just to be in the same ballpark :P

A more practical piece of advice: come up with a start point and an end point for the character's development.  Those points can be flexible, but they help to frame your fic and prevent characters from "drifting" off into random directions, if you're worried about that.

Sunny, I would like to take this moment to thank you for being our awesome Dalish scout through the morass that is Tumblr tags. You make it possible for the rest of us to enjoy art (and smut :P) without losing 1d10 sanity every morning. Basically, you're awesome <3

I just took a peek at my Trespasser screenshots and Cole, always count on Cole to deliver feels.

"Worship makes you more. He just wanted to help."

And other quotes. Cole + Lavellan, Solas they're coming to drag you back and save you from your bad life choices.

^ This.

I noticed that I use different approaches for different writing tasks. For my essays and papers I usually write linear (except for the introduction, which I always write last), mostly because I plan the structure of my work before starting to actually write.

When it comes to fiction though, I tend to write all over the place and it depends on what ideas I have at a specific time. Sometimes I write completely without a plot so I have no idea where I will end up, sometimes I plot before writing and use it as a kind of golden thread that I can follow along.

In both cases I found that neat little programm FreeMind (Link) pretty helpful for structuring purposes and handling information.

And lastly I guess there is no perfect solution that fits all. Everyone has her/his own style that works best for her/him.

There's always someone better. Let's say it is a simple ranking and you're in the top 0.01% best writers in the US, that still leaves 3,000 people just as good as you! (I mean the general you here.) Which is why comparisons are only there to make us all miserable.

Pretty much every single person on this thread who writes has intimidated me at some point. I remind myself that having an individuality, developing my unique characteristics as a writer is more important, and these will never be better or worse than anyone else's. Then I focus not just on the writing itself, but on building a community for us, because being a part of something bigger than myself and influencing, though not controlling, is a good perspective.

Usually I'd make a pot of hot water because I forgot to put the coffee in. This was when I left the basket in the machine and would bring the filter and coffee over. Now I fill the basket at the sink and carry it over with the pot of water. I make far less pots of 'tea' water now.

I find that writing it helps get it out of my system. I write it as it's a later chapter and set it aside to pull in later, or not, when I get to that point i may want something else. I have a few chapters that are 'extras' for now that most likely won't make it into the story, but I had to write them at the time. Ah, and no not all of them are smut scenes. -_-

I'm sorry about your grandfather. I lost mine three years ago. I wasn't able to go to the funeral since it's across the country. My mother brought me back a Peace Lily that someone had sent and it blooms every year the month he died.

Mmm.....I may give writing ahead a try to see what happens then.Or some kind of standalone something.

For science-er practice right?

I have to admit I think part of the distraction is the fact that I have kinda been winging it. Like, I set this goal and ending in mind and now I'm like "Let's fill in the gaps now" and it's done some weird stuff so far. So even I don't actually know when some of this stuff is gonna happen. Kinda scary.

For example, the most recent chapter I thought was going to end with some dancing.

Totes no dancing. Very far from dancing actually.

On a Solavellan writing note I do totally have the two next and final parts of that Mirrors thing I wrote planned and I'm pretty sure I'm going to make myself cry. Because that's what Solas fans like to do to ourselves I guess.

Great advice! I have something like that in my head, but I think the planning needs to be more precise.

Well, I did make a spreadsheet about that fic :D I should go fill in more of it.
