I've been listening to Saor (which is atmospheric black metal) and Sia this afternoon, and both are giving me Solas/Solavellan feels - if you're hellspiralling anything even slightly emotional is going to pull on your heartstrings.

Random question here but does anyone know if the current vallaslin's for DAI are the new widely used designs or if they're just for clan Lavellan? If the former, I'm curious what Merrill's would look like. ^^

We see the same vallaslin which are available to Lavellan PCs in CC on other Dalish elves in-game, like the clan you can meet in-game. Mythal's vallaslin design at least also is even the same on ancient elves such as Abelas. Does this help? Sorry if I misunderstood your question.

Solas made me discover Solas, the band, because when I finished the game (ahead of most of the population because of pre-order) I was searching for him and.. found Solas instead.

They're not my style at all, but when I listened to them they just fit into DA universe that I kept imagining them as a group of Dalish playing on makeshift instruments

There's always someone better. Let's say it is a simple ranking and you're in the top 0.01% best writers in the US, that still leaves 3,000 people just as good as you! (I mean the general you here.) Which is why comparisons are only there to make us all miserable. 

 

Pretty much every single person on this thread who writes has intimidated me at some point. I remind myself that having an individuality, developing my unique characteristics as a writer is more important, and these will never be better or worse than anyone else's. Then I focus not just on the writing itself, but on building a community for us, because being a part of something bigger than myself and influencing, though not controlling, is a good perspective. 

This! I really could intimidate myself out of continuing my story if I let the pressure get to me. There are so many amazing writers and I do not rate myself as one. Years ago I would never have put myself out there let alone attempted to write something that someone might be criticized in any way. Now I do it for me. The bonus is seeing how many people have taken the time to even click my story links, and then continue to read each chapter. I figured I'd have a few dozen readers not over 300 in so short a time. Those are just the individual visitors, the number of views has hit over 900. You'd think this would make me happier about my work, but it has in fact made me more self-conscious about the story. Because now I have hundreds of people that I might let down.

 

Mmm.....I may give writing ahead a try to see what happens then.Or some kind of standalone something.

I have to admit I think part of the distraction is the fact that I have kinda been winging it. Like, I set this goal and ending in mind and now I'm like "Let's fill in the gaps now" and it's done some weird stuff so far. So even I don't actually know when some of this stuff is gonna happen. Kinda scary.

For example, the most recent chapter I thought was going to end with some dancing.

Totes no dancing. Very far from dancing actually.

On a Solavellan writing note I do totally have the two next and final parts of that Mirrors thing I wrote planned and I'm pretty sure I'm going to make myself cry. Because that's what Solas fans like to do to ourselves I guess.

 

I've had scenes do this to me as well. Sometimes it takes on a new direction on it's own. Sometimes I'm happy with it, other times I'm like eh, no that just doesn't work here. Maybe for a different character?

 

I have a list of plot points to keep me focused since I am not planning on simply writing the game out, but rather have the main focus be the stuff that happens in between the quests in the game. Especially important once I get to the story between Cory's defeat and Trespasser, and then post-Trespasser.

I don't remember what her vallaslin looked like in DAO...but is it different in DA2?  I know she looks completely different. I didn't even know it was the same person until I played DAO again recently.

You'd have to ask the devs. For the sake of simplicity and consistency though when it comes to my own head I think the DA:I vallaslin designs apply to all Dalish, and so yes, I updated my mental images of Merrill, Velanna, Mahariel, etc. Since the DA:I vallaslin are not Lavellan-exclusive. Kind of like how if we were to meet a Dalish elf again from previous games I think they would be redesigned/overhauled to follow the way elves look in DA:I, as opposed to staying the markedly different DA:O (short human) and DAII (Na'vi aliens) iterations.

My understanding is that there is a certain tumblr user who I wont name and shame who has been writing stuff that isn't just Solas-critical, it's actually going after the fans of Solas and Solavellan themselves.

There is actually a mod that updates the DAI vallaslin to be like the DAO one, and the DAO and DA2 ones to be like the DAI ones.

Re: the most recent drama I've seen bits of it trickle by on my dash, mostly Solasfan responses/rebuttals and then requests from noninvolved Solasfans that both sides tag their critical/critical response/******/salt posts in order that they can keep their dash a non-toxic zone.
