Hey guys.. do any of you have any recommendations for rogue specializations... like now my Lavellan is using the bow and I was like wondering since I did not play with varric.. sometimes with Cole and Sera but I don't remember much about their specializations so which ones you liked the most if you had rogues and why?
Good and bad things? :3
Nope, no professor Solas for me. Professor Solas in general makes me uncomfortable.
I see dorky absentminded Solas as a poet, musician, or artist, or all three. He would also be one of those tortured souls, because while the quality of his work is spectacular, nobody understands his creations, because they're all inspired by visions in the Fade.
So he's sitting there in his suit which he bought from the thrift store and fixed up with magic, thinking solemnly how this gallery opening/jazz concert/poetry reading will be yet another failiure. Why is he even trying anymore? He will never reach those simple-minded gremlins with his work.
*snip*
So much THIS! ![]()
Also, regarding the rogue spec: I only played a rogue once, I used a bow and the artificer. I had fun with it and those mines you can put out or throw around are great for keeping the baddies of me and my mage of choice. Assassin doesn't make sense with a bow and tempest .. I don't know, I found it useless on Sera so I didn't want to be one. So yeah, artificer ftw! ^^

I like Tempest because 1,000 knives is amazing. The only one I use is the fire one - that removes the CD.
I hear assassin is pretty much indestructible though.
Rogue archer always and forever.
I enjoyed artificer pretty much with a bow. Kind of midrange.

Has Feynite shown up yet?
Must go edit post from last night (pg. 5412) for clarification and honesty...ugh.... ![]()
Maybe it explains how I can be both ENTJ and INFP?!? = it's complicated. ![]()

I always play dual wield assassin rogue first. Haven't played Artificer or Tempest yet. For me, I tend to add in a few stealth and evasion skills, along with a full Assassin tree and with good gear, crafted daggers, and even guard on hit, you'll have someone who can deal a lot of damage quickly, break guard, and gain bonuses from stealth and flanking. I love getting right in there and doing a lot of damage, then in and out. My Lavellan is a compact little damage machine, and paired with Cassandra, was an excellent front line.

Judging from all the posts here, I guess that makes me a disgusting horrible person for being the only one here that likes Professor Solas then. Figures...
I think I'll take my leave now.

I really don't judge. Especially since I like Solas a bit darker and feel much more lenient towards da'len/hahren than most people seem to on the thread. We all have our preferences!
I played artificer. It seems underpowered at first since the AI for Varric is terrible at placing traps. But if controlled by the player, the artificer's elemental mines are basically a win button. Made of explosives
. Artificer also has passive buffs that affect the whole party, and since Lavellan will always be in the party, everyone benefits.
I've played some as Sera, and Tempest is also super fun. Mechanically, lightning flask is better on an AI than a player-controlled character, but it's still fun turning into turret rogue. IMO you can make any specialization work, but archery is best suited to artificer and tempest.

I played archer Assassin, dw Tempest and dw Assassin.
I loved Tempest spec as dw, but when archer, I don't see myself using anything else than Assassin spec. All three skills are useable from a distance. Plus Mark of Death is wonderful when you learn when to trigger it.
Also, IMO, Stealth is never point wasted.
Look guys, I found the perfect word for Solas:
Verschlimmbesserung: A German word for an attempted improvement that just made things worse.

I don't think you're disgusting!
I understand why people are squicked out by it. Have you watched a professor hitting on a student? I have. It's sad. It's like...yo. Stop it. I also really enjoy the awesome relationship one can have with their professor without the sex. That's something special!! I've had some amazing ones. Ones that sent me letters after college - long ones - encouraging me to keep my passions and be awesome and brilliant. And I'm crying now(weep Professor Fruhan). But yeah...sexualizing that relationship it makes me a little sad. I get the kink. It's a very obvious one and I don't think anyone was kinkshaming(tee hee) but I see how it can be a bit tired.
I think it's fine if he's a professor and Lavellan is like unaffiliated with the college. Or at least in the administration which would actually be consistent AU. You know. Since she's already his boss in the game.
Also more dom-Lavellan PLEASE!

Oh! I usually don't like them either. Or AUs in general. I prefer what I read to be as close to canon as possible. But I also don't like reading someone else's Lavellan's name over and over and over, so I take the fanfics I can find that don't have that. Which only seem to be feynite's and aicosu's. ![]()

I like these - "generic" Lavellans. I would try her long form though. She's a good writer. I too get annoyed when it's too focused on the OC. It's fine if the writing isn't bad and the OC's aren't unlikeable, but they are a lot unfortunately.(smut is a different story. my standards are much lower)

Yes, thanks so much Kissiebear.
Look, I'd never criticize anyone's fatasies about anything. I seriosuly would be the last person to do that. I was just saying why personally professor Solas is a huge turn-off for me. As a lowly science grad student, the profs own me. The power imbalance is astronomical there. So I view them differently and place them in a mentoring role which is such that the thought of Solas just being one of them makes me uncomfortable. But no one else has to see it that way. In addition there was some controversy in science only recently, and some very hurtful things were said about how the female scientists in lab would inevitably fall in love with the male scientists. So I feel like the professor Solas/colleague Lavellan even if she's not a student just feeds into that stereotype. But that's just my very narrow view.

We all just have different preferences, which is how it tends to go when you have a group of different people, especially like us from all over the place. It has been clear you like professor and dom!Solas and that's not my thing but whatever people enjoy, seriously. I think we all have a good level of acceptance around here. ![]()

Oh same here! Sometimes I have to skim though the parts that focus a lot on the OC or OCs (or too many OCs), because I lose patience.
Thank you for the recommendations. ![]()

It makes a lot of sense for personal experiences to affect one's POV on this stuff, especially when for some, it's more of a distant fantasy and for you, you have a different relationship to the idea of professors. There's a difference when you are more embedded within a certain reality such that whatever fantasies you come up with are likely things that are distant to you.
Last night, one of the harp players had a face my eyes kept returning to. I know nothing about the life of an orchestra musician, so there's room there for some sort of fantasy (just an example!). But, on the other hand, I know a bunch of artists, and might be less inclined there (I love artists, so that's not a slam, but just saying, familiarity!).
Doesn't make any of these fantasies less valid.
