I like ketchup. You prefer mustard. Simple. <3

Both opinions are equally valid. :)

He'd be so jaded and everyday he would turn up his nose at the Starbucks run and glower while he got out his canteen of his own fancy coffee from home.
Bonus: Dorian and Vivienne as fellow gradstudents with whom he shares his office space.

(ha I used to be a grad student this is taking me back)

Oh! I usually don't like them either. Or AUs in general. I prefer what I read to be as close to canon as possible. But I also don't like reading someone else's Lavellan's name over and over and over, so I take the fanfics I can find that don't have that. Which only seem to be feynite's and aicosu's. =]

I have mixed feelings about AUs, but after reading some, I've decided that at least for DA I think I prefer them - why?

Considering how little we yet know of canon (as much as we know about it already) and where things can go in the future, many of those 'canon' fanfictions that try and accurately predict the future may yet - ironically - turn out to be way more off the mark than many of the alternate universe stuff, with where they go with their theories.

So I think I prefer AU just because of that - they know they're off-mark. That makes for a more relaxed reading.

With that said, it's not that I don't enjoy fanfiction that try and throw their own spin on canon that are simply written well - hence Feynite's works are quite enjoyable :)

Also - the AU I want to see: an epic space opera! With spaceships, space-stations and space-battles! ... Maybe I should try something myself? xD

Dorian and Vivienne making fun of him for his old man sweaters during the winter.  But Solas doesn't give a damn.   Their office isn't heated, and he's comfy :P

Dorian leaving empty cartons of takeout all over the office space (because let's face it, dude's never learned how to cook).

All three bonding over drinks when Solas is the first to pass his written quals.

The professor/student relationship is very important and can be very powerful--especially between a grad student and her adviser. The mentee/mentor relationship is really a key part of garnering expertise in your field. It's like Virgil/Dante. Someone is guiding you. And yes, there are shades of eros in such intimate relationships, but they are complicated and there are lines you do not cross out of respect and duty.

However, a lot of the prof/student fantasy engages with the best parts of the power differentiation without really thinking about what such a relationship would entail. The romanticization off such relationships is very popular. I get the appeal. But the reality is different.

I wouldn't care so much, if the "hot for hahren teacher" thing wasn't so popular and so unreflective.

And, as someone who has to deal with this narrative a lot: for example,  "Do your students hit on you?" was a question recently asked. I am deeply uncomfortable with the popular narrative as such.

So, yes, have your fantasy spaces, but also acknowledge the exigencies and fraughtness of such narratives.

Also, no, it would not be better if Lavellan was his boss, or the prof/student thing was reversed.

I just wanted to chime in on the some of the fanfiction talk.

I actually really like reading stuff with people's characters instead of generic. I like seeing how Thedas and the people in it react to all the different possibilities.

And I still can't get into modern AU. Time travel and Arlathan stuff is fun, but otherwise I just can't get into it.

None of this means other ways are bad. Just how I roll I suppose.

Now, back to working on shamelessly hooking my Lavellan up with Zevran.

Just found out that after a few weeks of treatments, my mom will be having some minor surgery probably early next week (nothing much, they're just trying to close an uncomplicated sore/wound on her back that just will not fully heal), so I'm going to visit this weekend. So after last night's whole tabletop misunderstanding, I can't make it anyway. I'll PM to make sure this isn't lost in the thread just in case.

Someone on tumblr started one of those! I am trying to remember who it was but can't at the moment. Unfortunately, they haven't written a lot of it, but I really love the concept. Their ship is the Haven, on a scientific expedition to rediscover the homeworld of the elves. Lavellan found a bit of technology that is probably from there and attached itself to her (the mark!) and Solas is their pilot and it's hinted he's not what he pretends to be. I really wish they'd continue running with that idea. If I can find out who it is, I'll come back to edit this post with a link!

Cool, if you find it, lemme know :)

Also - the whole "Haven is a ship" (or a museum, or a coffee shop, or else) is also one of aspects why I enjoy some AUs - I like seeing how people re-interpret and re-contextualize elements (like places, history, events or relationships) we know from canon narrative. It makes for a very fun reading when it's done well, though that's true about everything - AU or fanfiction or not.

Well, no idea what happened with my old post *sighs* Anyway, space opera : someone on tumblr started one. It's called Collision Course. too bad there's only a few short chapters, as I like their premise.

Also, Shale as the ship's A.I. makes me laugh.

just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting it would be any better if Lavellan was the prof. neither is my thing (either in fantasy OR real life), specifically for the reasons you discuss. just a light-hearted post made with the idea in mind of a sullen solas sharing an office space with dorian and refusing coffee and such. :P

I've finished gradschool and my advisor at one point was a professor who had entered into physical relationships with female students of his before and it made me feel SUPER uncomfortable. not cool

Grad school friend Solas has the potential for being really funny.

He would be the one to sleep in the lab, and in the morning they would find him drooling on his desk.

The comments in his code would be poems in yambic pentameter, and nobody would be able to comprehend the code or the comments.

He would be the one to constantly incur safety violation points for his lab, because he insists on walking around barefoot and refuses to wear a lab coat.

He would be the one to always interrupt your lab meeting presentation, commenting on how every single technique, piece of data, or hypothesis is WRONG.

I had one professor who was fond of hitting on some of us in sometimes subtle and not too subtle ways. It was uncomfortable, especially as he would talk about partying and going to clubs on my street when he was younger (this was when I was studying in Madrid). Anyway, he's a semi-known theater director who led our class and at the time was likely dating one of his students/company members from outside our school. He made a lot of us uncomfortable. We had an after play party at a bar. We performed 16th century Spanish short plays in a theater from that era as our project. Amazing experience all around and something I'll never forget.

I've mentioned how I am a wired extrovert when I'm comfortable and having fun at a social gathering. Well, he kept commenting on me being there until the bar closed (with a friend and the locals) and other stuff and he was not sober. It was weird. I had kind of forgotten about that until just now. That night was the only time in my life I've ever been even a bit drunk.

I understand the fantasy some might have because of the dynamics, but it's definitely not my thing. Professor CreepyDirector didn't help.

Just popping in from thesis advisor-induced hermitry to say, whoever recommended Daughter of the Empire, thank you so much, it's amazing, I haven't been this excited to read through a book in a while.

And popping back out again before the advisor spots me and fries me

You're welcome :D (I think I was the only one mentioning it? )

That trilogy is one of the first loves of my life   Enjoy  :D

I gotcha.  I'm sorry to hear about your mom.  But family always comes before RPGs :)  Enjoy your visit, and I hope everything works out.

While he can be insensitive, I don't think he's quite THAT GUY yet.  (Because every time someone is like that in presentations, I just want to strangle them.)  I think he'd interrupt once or twice, then sit and fume quietly while he mentally composes a long-ass email about how wrong you are.  Which he then sends right after your lab meeting, thinking he's helped you out :P

OK, yeah, that's better. HC accepted.

But when you ask him, "How do you know your technique/theory is better?", he answers, "I saw it in the Fade."

The Acknowledgements section of his talks/papers will be filled with names of spirits.

Yes, stonefist for those people!  Also for the person who interrupts every five minutes with snarky little comments that have nothing to do with the science itself. It hasn't happened to me, but I've seen it happen in a talk, I think the whole audience wanted to strangle them by the end.

Thankfully I only saw this kind of behavior in undergrad.  While working in the grad program, everyone's been fairly polite.  Occasionally awkward, but awkward is fine.  I do science, I can handle awkward people :D

Ugh, this.  I would strangle him for this.  Or maybe I'd just let him wander about.  I work in a neuroscience lab; he's bound to step in something foul and learn his lesson sooner or later :P
