Totally off-topic (feel free to scroll by!). my nerves, ayy

 

so tomorrow I am going to the national conference for the largest/dominant political party in my country, with an advocacy (equality+inclusion sorta stuff) group I'm connected to, to talk about stuff like non-binary recognition (!!) and other trans equality issues like access to healthcare sdfdsdsedgfd. I'm not like doing a presentation or anything it's totally minor but will be speaking to party members and members of parliament etc who come by 

 

and my eyes are the size of saucers just thinking about it LOL

I don't know how to say this without sounding creepy, but I once found myself in a slightly reversed situation.

When I joined the group I'm currently in, I noticed that my supervisor is pretty handsome. He's not old either, around 35. I was horrified with myself, going "Brain, what r u doin, brain, STAHP!" I got over it pretty quickly.. but .. it's been 3 years and I still can't talk to him without blushing. I can hold a short conversation only when I don't look him in the eye. Whenever he's in a 3 meter radius, I act like I'm socially challenged. Even if I talk to somebody else and he's listening, I start blushing. When we have lunch with the group, I take the seat that's furthest from him. I wonder if he thinks I hate him or I'm just really weird.

This is absolutely horrible, how am I supposed to finish my research like this?? Why do you do this to me, brain??

 

Professor Solas doesn't really bother me, because I try really hard to dissociate the fics from my own experiences.

There's still so much to be done. There was a pretty good piece I read yesterday predominantly about NB representation and visibility matters when one's appearance leans more binary. But healthcare and other stuff is so important. I know someone who has been transitioning for under a year and because of a lack of current legal gender matching his actual gender, he was charged so much more under insurance to start on hormones than someone legally recognized as a man would.

 

So, remember the encouragement puppies and us here *hugs*.

Yeah, Mara of the Acoma is such a well written character and you really get a fantastic feeling of how the culture and society work. And I love that the scheming, honor focus and mannerisms are feudal Japan-inspired.

 

Bawled my eyes out in some chapters, the feels are overwhelming. The only thing I couldn't figure out in my mind is where the third pair of legs on the needra were supposed to be attached (have studied too much animal anatomy to see how it could ever work on big mammals  )

I was attracted to one of my supervisors too. Luckily I don't blush easily so it's no problem. I just enjoyed his company knowing that nothing's going to happen. I guess it's worse if you try to deny your feelings. Acknowledge them, but don't become preoccupied with them. I hope that helps.

Similarly, I like grad student solas as long as lavellan is also a grad student!

 

I just... eh, I mentioned this before on this thread, but a friend of mine was involved in a predatory relationship with an older teacher and it just was not a good thing, it hurt her in lots of ways, he was horrible to her in the end and accused her of manipulating him into it and twisting his desires and didn't recognise his position of power over her, so I'm sensitive to it. It's the age thing, really.

I didn't know they were doing stuff like non-binary recognition, that's dead cool. Coincidentally, a couple of my friends who are trans activists actually spoke about it to parliament (!!!) last week. I think there's serious potential for it to be recognised by the powers that be right now in the UK.
 

I'm not really much into AUs, with the rare exception, but I'd be more taken with sociopolitical activist Solas than these formal, professor, politician, military, doctor, ideas.

 
ah man, I had this great left activist idea a while back where Solas was one of those snotty Marxist history professors who crosses picket lines and dismisses unions and workers rights as 'already failed' and neoliberalism as 'inevitable', who has lost faith in everything he supposedly believes. In comes then a cute new postdoc Lavellen who is massively passionate about getting involved with academic workers' rights and fighting against people who want to turn their university into a business. She probably makes vegan brownies and tea in solidarity with the phD student teachers who are on strike about their lousy contracts, and helps Solas not to be such a massive scab and regain his faith in the REVOLUTION.
 
then I realised literally only me would find that funny or cute.
 
context: I joined - and subsequently left - a revolutionary party during my second year as an undergraduate, it's a unique experience but I wouldn't particularly recommend it, like, at all.

I'd find that pretty cute. I understand why people go for the professor vibe but I love the compassionate side and like I said earlier, it's not even so much the rebel. A disillusioned activist Solas and a Lavellan who makes him see people as worth caring about...well...yes please.

that's awesome!! yeah there is some neat stuff going on right now, iirc recently the largest dataset on nb people collected in the uk ever, itll be presented to the uk parliament in october and then in early 2016 itll be used to make best practise guidelines for service providers and employers etc where nb people are concerned. /o/

I love younger Solas as a concept, but you barely see him outside of Arlathan/elfy fics, where he's usually in his full Fen'Harel get-up. I'd love to see a younger, contrarian Solas in an AU, where he's nobody special, just an intelligent young man who manages to bullshit his way through life 50% of the time and straddles the line between insufferable and incredible.

 

In fact, just Dorian, Vivienne, and Solas as housemates full stop. The snark would be endless.

If I remember right, the only main difference is the lack of discussing magic with him. As a rogue your Lavellan wouldn't have any reason to discuss it, but honestly it's been so long since I played anything but a mage that I forgot. Though his flirt for the rogue is the best of all three, his, "No I am declaring it. It was not up for debate." Gaah! gets me every time.

Gotta say it, the flirt for the warrior is disappointing. I remembered the rogue flirt and the mage flirt being fun and a little naughty, but the warrior flirt was... not.

Your description of normal younger Solas reminds me so forcibly of what Dorian's actually like in-game.  I think they would hate each other  There can only be one handsome, insufferable genius in this house!

I wouldn't even begin to know where to place mine in this setting. Though she and Dorian share a love for their people but also frustration with their more stubborn qualities. I feel activist leanings and some sort of social science. Anthropology, probably. But I'm sure there's something better that doesn't sound like my undergrad experience.

 

I am in the weirdest mood today and trying to decide if I need a nap or pizza first.
