Yes! I'm married to a great guy, and I hellspiral all the time. It has much more to do with how deeply you experience a story, how attached you are to the characters, and how you feel for them. 

 

It is about how deeply you get into characters. I'm not this way about all characters, but I do have serious fictional character feels. I used to feel like I was weird when I was a kid because of that, and I didn't talk about it. Now I know I am not alone, so I don't care who knows. I think that I can honestly say that the level of Solas feels (with the helplessness and frustration) is very much like my Severus Snape feels, which are legend in my house.

I just want to say that I find all this writing talk really fascinating, even though I haven't contributed to the discussion. What is it about this thread (or Solas?) that's attracted so many writers?

 

I write myself, though mostly for sanity management. I would likely explode several times a day if I couldn't write. It's how I process everything.

 

Trying to write fiction, however, has always felt like trying to wrestle a wild elephant ... from atop its back. It's never that I don't enjoy the attempt or can't find something to write about. The challenge is trying to make it go where I want and not fall off a cliff in the process I have trouble with my sentences getting away from me all the time, forget about plotlines. I am in constant awe of people who write longform fiction.

 

I really only have one useful thing to say about writing, and maybe life in general: get rid of perfectionism. Learning how to do anything is always messy, and perfectionism hates a mess. Seriously, pick it up and boot it out the window. It'll come back, of course. You have to keep kicking it out.

I was rereading the series last month and had SOOOOO many feels. Snape feels, Sirius Black feels, Remus feels, and oh god the Kreacher feels. Kreacher feels get worse as I get older.

Hmm I like her. She has an attitude I would approve a lot. I also like how you thought of how she started falling for Solas later on and not at first sight though she felt very intrigued by him. I like that.

Having good friends and family is what Lavellan needs for sure! She reunites with everyone 2 years after it all ended only to be reminded of Solas leaving her, then she faces him and gets the shock of her life, so I think she would need all the love she can get! I also like how out of everyone, Cole and Cullen are the last ones to walk away at the end. It's funny because in my game they were closest to her so it works for headcanon lol

I would love to read them:  Age, Class and specialization (why those ones, was there a reason), Personality, what do you think they mostly adored about Solas like what were the facinating things for YOUR lavellan about him. Also I would like to know their relationship with clan lavellan, if they lived or died and how they reacted to that. How is their backround? And lastly.. if you could choose your own thing to say to Solas in trespasser what would they say? I will post mine later if someone is interested :3

Bronwyn Lavellan

Age: 32 at the start of the game.

Class and spec: I played through twice with her, once as Rift Mage, another time as Knight Enchanter. Both work, though I'm unsure about which one will be my canon.

Personality: Down-to-earth, practical, and dedicated. Lawful Good, probably an ISFJ. Appears on the surface as very serious, although is astute, and can be quite cutting underneath the polite, smiling surface. She's very organised, and very good at diplomacy and settling disputes - I choose diplomatic options 9 times out of 10 - and was perhaps the 'secretary' to the Keeper in some respects, she'd sort out the logistics of travelling and living on the move whilst her Keeper would set out the grand vision. In a lot of ways she was the clan mum, she's very attached and protective of them but believes they'll self-destruct without her. Has a touch of dalish Aveline about her, in that sense. She finds her role satisfying but often frustrating, and sacrificed a lot of time and effort in order to do her job well. I think she always wished she could have learnt more magic and history from Deshanna, or had the leisure time to further improve and refine her magical techniques, and the Inquisition is oddly liberating in a sense that it does allow her that time, and that her advisers take charge of the nitty-gritty technical stuff she usually does herself. She's quite a hands-on leader for that reason.

What do you think they mostly adored about Solas like what were the facinating things for YOUR lavellan about him:

 

She had a great respect for his knowledge of magic - it's that promise of knowledge which she never felt her Keeper provided (diplomacy and cunning were Deshanna's specialties, not secrets of magic), and she was curious to learn, and Solas was happy to oblige. At first she finds the whole, 'quiet, knowledgable elf completely overjoyed at intellectual companionship' really quite endearing, and believed at first he was closed off simply because he was a tad quiet or formal, and that's one of the reasons he's reluctant to engage in a relationship at first (she was completely wrong on that count).

 

She also respects how moral he is, and she respects that he cares for city elves in a way that she felt a lot of her clan members didn't, and should have done. Bronwyn's best friend Sheri left the clan in her teens because she was pregnant with a human child, and Bronnie was the only person who ever visited more than once (she visits every year), so that was a particular sticking point.

 

Bronwyn's pretty accepting of some - not all, and certainly not the hatefulness - of his criticisms of the dalish, as she believes that they need to reach out beyond their clan-sized bubble more, and hopes to settle some day. I think that's partially one of the reasons she found the revelations at the Temple of Mythal easier to accept - she liked her clan as a social unit, but didn't buy into the mythological and political purpose of the dalish lifestyle anywhere nearly as much (I imagine she almost had considered becoming an atheist before). I think she's also intrigued by the hints of his more rebellious, chaotic past, but is probably quietly relieved that's behind him.

Also I would like to know their relationship with clan lavellan, if they lived or died and how they reacted to that.

 

Clan Lavellan lived (I managed to get that right on my first playthrough, lucky me). I think... Bronwyn removed her vallaslin, and I imagine after everything that had occurred, she couldn't justify that kind of lifestyle any more. She couldn't go back. She was in some sense glad for the permanent home in Wycome, as that probably led to a change in perspective for her clan. As 'relatively friendly' to humans they may be, removal of vallaslin was a massive no in their books, I think. Her mum is the clan storyteller, who takes the opposite perspective on religion - she's very spiritual, and faith is incredibly important to her, so she's devastated that she no longer bears her vallaslin, which she took partially in memory of her (deceased) father, and thus it's a personal slight too. However, because she saved them, I doubt they could fully reject her, especially knowing how dedicated she was previously to the clan. They wonder what the hell those shems did to her head though to do such a 180. Deshanna is likely the only person who probably sympathises with her in full, and tells her that if she needs to return she always has a place in clan Lavellan.

And lastly.. if you could choose your own thing to say to Solas in trespasser what would they say?
 

I think... I think she'd just cry, and hug him, and refuse to stop hugging him. Bronnie is usually so practical in most matters, and barely ever cries, but she's so so sweet and gentle and fluffy in a relationship, like she's a true romantic, but it's not something she ever expected to happen in her lifetime, so she's... floating, I think, over the moon, for a lot of the Inquisition's time, despite all the stressful events. When Solas broke up with her I think her heart just broke on the spot, her lip trembled a little and a light went off inside with a little 'oh'.

 

I think she's toughened up emotionally over the space of two years, to the point that she's much more integrated with human society and believes she's almost over him - had she gotten involved with someone else, which I think she was ready for, no way would she have considered replying to Solas in such loving terms. However I think the events of Trespasser were a reminder that she couldn't just leave her past behind, and I think a lot of feelings she thought she was over came flooding back, so she perhaps acted a lot more emotionally than normal. I think when love ends for circumstances beyond your control - i.e. maybe distance is an issue, and you have to break it off - then if those circumstances change, and improve, it can sometimes flourish again. Even in the worst possible situations (such as this one).

Whereas David, Frank, and Nathan all have hidden depths and personal struggles and some of their bad actions are actually good, or at least have good intentions (others are straight-up bad).

 

Jefferson I suppose is the odd one out in this case. What a vile man.

Personality: A snarky troll who gives 0 f*cks about anything and anyone, including herself. At least in the beginning of the story. Clever. Damaged. Trust issues. 

 

What do you think they mostly adored about Solas like what were the facinating things for YOUR lavellan about him:

 

1. The Game. Trying to figure him out and outplay him. The poor thing, she really thinks she'll be able to dominate him eventually. 

2. They share the burden of having f*cked up royally at some point, although in different ways. They really bond over it with time, and the bond remains really strong even after the break up. I HC a lot of friendship scenes between them after the break up, actually. 

 

Also I would like to know their relationship with clan lavellan, if they lived or died and how they reacted to that.

 

She's been exiled for 10 years and grown apart from them by the time DAI starts. I think they eventually died in my PT, but she was so estranged at that point, it almost felt like a relief that she was free from her duty to them. 

 

And lastly.. if you could choose your own thing to say to Solas in trespasser what would they say?

LOL, I can blab about my Lavellan forever. I'm one of those people who has a hard time writing anything that's not for my own Lavellan. Modern AU is an exception, since that's pure fluff.

Name: Clariel Lavellan
Age: 23 as of DA:I, 26 as of Trespasser
Class: Archer rogue, artificer specialization. She used to have June's vallaslin, and the artificer really fit the god of the craft.
What she liked about Solas: Their shared Ravenclaw traits They both love to ask questions and learn, and for her the fact that Solas was so knowledgeable but still so curious really drew her in. She definitely fell for him quickly.  The funny thing is, as my Lavellan brought Solas's softer and more sympathetic traits, he also brought out the edge in her.  Having known him and loved him made her a better Inquisitor, and now a much more formidable opponent to the Dread Wolf.
Relationship with Clan Lavellan: Warm but complicated. The clan's still alive, and Clariel still considers herself Dalish even after everything that's happened. Her immediate family is very loving and supportive. But she can't help but feel awkward and distant with the rest of the clan after everything she's experienced. It's a more extreme version of what happens sometimes after university; you go back to where you grew up, and everything feels unfamiliar. Not because they've changed, but because you've changed.

Trespasser: "I will never forget you, ma sa'lath. Even if you forget yourself."

 

 

 

My long-term boyfriend doesn't get the hellspiral, but he's fairly tolerant of it.  He only occasionally makes fun of me He doesn't really play video games for the feelz; he's much bigger on the mechanics.  So WoW, Hearthstone, Civilization, etc.  

 

Funny! I thought my Lavellan the same age as yours and now my canon one is also an archer though she is tempest and totally that vallaslin fits perfectly! And I gotta say when you said that how they brought new things up of themselves as they fell in love I actually said '' AWW '' in real life. I thought that was super adorable. You clan situation feels also very realistic. You must've given a thought about this! Thank you for sharing! I love reading all these!

Age: 29 at the beginning of the game, so around 33 I guess for Trespasser

Class: Mage

Specialization: Fire/ Knight Enchanter  The fire is because I just think fire mages are awesome and always fun to play in all kinds of games. But she would have chosen KE because of the balance it would give. I mean, fire is pretty wild and all over the place, being a KE would have offered more control over it. Not to mention the added bonus of being able to walk through your own walls of fire because as you fight you build a barrier.

What she liked about Solas: Loooooved mage talk with him and picking his brain about what he has seen in the Fade, especially the subject of spirits. I would imagine Solas having quite the calming effect on her as well and the fact that Solas obviously does not worship the Dalish gods would have been something she liked since it would have been a pretty hot issue back in her clan.

What would Solas like about her: Mayriya has an open mind, is curious and willing to hear out anyone. Plus, she is fiercely protective of whoever she perceives as her "People". Sadly, I think that's the line that Solas crossed with Trespasser.

Relationship with Clan: Felt like an outsider, but they were her people so very important to her. Family level of important. Even though her views on how the clan should be would have been unliked by most, she would have had some respect due to fighting to protect everyone. They did die, and the loss was pretty devastating. It's what basically sealed the deal for her to consider all of Thedas her 'People'.

Trespasser thoughts: Actually, dialogue in the game was pretty good. Everything along the lines of finding the idea that Solas would do something that could kill everyone being totally unacceptable. I don't know exactly what she would have said.......but definitely something about not understanding how he can remotely claim to love her if he's willing to destroy her world/people instead of trying to work within it.

My first (and only) Lavellan is Aneira, the gal in my picture on the left. She is a twentysomething and originally a rogue with bow and artificer spec. But I started her again and now she is a mage. I intend to play her the same way though, since she is practically the same person. Oh and the new version does have a vallaslin, too, which the first did not have.

 

She is a sceptical person and not too happy about being chosen as the First. She does not really believe in the creators or thinks they have been gone a very long time or why else would her people have such a hard life? She needed longer than most of her clan to get her vallaslin because she was unsure. When the topic of the conclave came up she volunteered to go there and watch and become more experienced. But she also just wanted to get away for a while to think about her life.

 

Personality wise she is a very honest person and almost always says what she thinks. She hates being lied to and she is a bit rough with people. Since becoming Inquisitor she doesn't want anyone to think she might not be strong enough or capable to deal with everything. She only lets her guard down around Solas and her closest friends (Varric and Dorian).

 

Regarding Solas she is (or was) attracted to his calmness and his "wisdom" (for loss of a better word). She also liked how he viewed things, mostly, and that he always wanted to help people.

 

Her relationship with her clan is well enough. They are alive and in my hc after Solas vanished she went to visit them and tell them about the things she had learned at the Temple of Mythal and from Mythal/Flemeth herself.

 

When she met Solas again in Trespasser I wished for her to say something along the lines of "Why didn't you trust me enough to tell me? We could always talk openly about everything." That's what disappointed her the most. At least about him being Fen'Harel. His plans to destroy Thedas...well, she is more shocked by that than disappointed.^^

 

Sooo .. yeah, that's a quick roundup of my first and only Lavellan. I think there can only be one for me.^^
